30 Seconds to Mars rejoin EMI/Virgin

After being embroiled expensive in a lawsuit with their label last year for a surprising $30 million, 30 Seconds To Mars and Virgin have apparently mended fences. The band has re-signed to EMI/Virgin in a new worldwide deal. 30 Seconds to Mars, fronted by vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter Jared Leto, is currently in the studio in Los Angeles recording their third album with acclaimed producer Flood, known for his work with U2, Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode, and Smashing Pumpkins.

The emo/rock band, fronted by actor Jared Leto, sold a million copies of their last album, A Beautiful Lie and hit the mainstage at Warped in 2006.

Journalist James Montgomery recently visited the studio where the band is recording and posted an elaborate account. You can find that here.

Mark Hoppus of Blink-182 awarded for use of Octopus prop (by PETA)

In one of the more unusual press releases coming out of PETA, Blink-182 bassist Mark Hoppus has received a Compassionate Citizen Awards from PETA for the band’s use of an expensive prop octopus in a recent video shoot. Mark explained via Twitter:

We paid nearly $1,000 for a movie prop octopus for a photo shoot so a real one doesn’t have to die. [D]o [I] get an award?

PETA frequently recognizes advertisers and filmmakers who use animatronic models and computer-generated imagery instead of real animals. The group points out that octopi are intelligent and sensitive animals who have been observed cooperating and communicating with each other. Hoppus will receive a framed certificate and a card signed by peta2 staffers.

Fat Wreck Chords cuts CD prices to under $10 in the US

Fat Wreck Chords today announced plans to reduce the price of all their CDs to under $10 throughout the United States. Label bossman and NOFX singer Fat Mike explained:

This is not a sale. This is how much this CD costs, and not only that, but EVERY CD on Fat Wreck Chords will now be under $10 and most will be under $8. No, we are not crazy. We just think that having a very low CD price is a fair way for scene supporting music fans to support their favorite independent bands and labels. Sound crazy? I think it sounds reasonable. We make less profit, but bands hopefully will sell more CDs to more people, which is why we started doing this in the first place.

Among those albums are the newly released Coaster from NOFX which is streaming on their Punknews.org Profile.

Frank Turner signs to Epitaph Records

Frank Turner Frank Turner, solo artist formerly of Million Dead, has signed to Epitaph Records who will release Love, Ire and Song and other future releases outside the UK. Frank explained:

Anyone with even a passing knowledge of punk rock will have some inkling of how fucking awesome this is. For many years (and this is pre-myspace) the Epitaph logo was a badge of quality that meant I would buy the record, regardless of what it was. In so doing I got into almost all my favourite punk bands. They’re still one of the best labels in the world, and they’re independent to boot. It’s also really important to me that they’ve accommodated me staying with Xtra Mile in the UK – those guys are my family, and there’s no way I was going to jump ship.

Frank has a touring planned and will be supporting The Offspring as well as headlining a UK run with Fake Problems.
