Joey Cape unveils new song, new project

Joey Cape of Lagwagon, Me First and The Gimme Gimmes, Bad Astronaut and Afterburner has posted a new song and unveiled a new band which is currently titled Dead Penguin:

I just finished mixing this song. I wanted to post something before I left for tour with The Gimme Gimmes tomorrow. The song is called “This Is The Last Train”. O.K., So… This version was originally a demo. I later recorded it with another band. The band has no name. Actually, the band has about 20 names. We just can’t decide which one isn’t bad.

For now, I will refer to that band as “Dead Penguin”, my favorite title in the running. Dead Penguin’s version of the song is a rock version. I think it sounds like “Pinkerton” era Weezer. Anyway, I recorded an entire record with Dead Penguin in December 2006. That band is made up of 4 of my oldest friends and of course myself.

The full album should be complete by September. There is no label and no plans. I know what you’re thinking. Isn’t he in enough bands already? Yes I am. Dead Penguin was just a project purely for fun. I can’t wait for people to hear that record. It’s raw, unpolished and nothing like anything I’ve done.

You can check out the song on his myspace page.

Maritime writing for new album

Though rumours abound that the band had split up, news has come in that Maritime is still active and is working on the follow up to their acclaimed 2006 album, We, The Vehicles.

Their label, Flameshovel, explained:

Maritime are currently prepping for their follow up to We, The Vehicles [Flameshovel] and we are proud to have them back on the roster-but it’s not like they ever really left-the band did however have three babies and a few wedding in the last year, but as their kids learn to crawl the band has diligently been working on new material that promises to be another classic record from these Promise Ring alumni.

The Offspring post status update, nearing end of recording

The Offspring frontman Dexter Holland has issued the following update via the band’s official website:

Working hard, it’s just taking awhile to get everything right. Every new part you record, you’re trying out different stuff to get just the right guitar, microphone, amp, whatever…I can tell you though, the couple songs we just finished sound like a friggin’ freight train…trying to get finished recording in the next month or so we’ll keep you posted.

The still-untitled new album is their follow-up to 2003’s Splinter and is expected in 2007 release via Columbia Records. It will mark the very first proper studio album recorded with drummer Atom Willard, who is the replacement of former member Ron Welty.

The band plans to play Japan in August, appearing at the Summer Sonic Festival on the 11th and 12th alongside bands like Sum 41, Avenged Sevenfold, Bloc Party, Interpol, and of course Cyndi Lauper.

World/Inferno Friendship Society working on punk-rock opera following Peter Lorre’s life

World Inferno Friendship Society Brooklyn’s punk-circus performers World/Inferno Friendship Society have joined forces with Caden Manson to create what is being billed as a “punk-rock opera for the times.” “Fiend in Wien: Peter Lorre’s 20th Century” chronicles the life of actor and director Peter Lorre, known for his roles in classics such as “The Man Who Knew Too Much” and “Casablanca.” It follows his “unheralded existence from his days with Wedekind and Brecht through the cycle of World Wars to a pitiless fall from grace in the drug-infused quagmire of Hollywood vines.”

W/IFS will be providing a song-cycle for “the multi-media spectacle” to be released in recorded form via Chunksaah this Fall, alongside the stage debut of the opera.

For more information, check this page in the future.

W/IFS released their Chunksaah debut, Red-Eyed Soul, last year.
