Well, I've been thinking about it for a couple days, but I haven't come up with a good subject for my 3,000th post. I thought about a lot of different things, many with a retrospective bent, but that's a path that could be more depressing than celebratory. Since I came up blank, and AIX has some new developments, I figure a post about BF2 would be as appropriate as anything else I might come up with.

I may have posted about AIX in the past. It's a good mod that allows you to play with bots. Some really nice maps and gfx, and some great new weapons. The all-bot battles may be too easy for experienced BF2 players, but when the bots are used to fill out human teams, a lot of fun can be had.

There are THREE NEW map-packs out, to be downloaded in FOUR parts.

    The mod:

Previous map-packs, should get these before the newer ones:

    🍻

Congratulations! You have joined a rather exclusive club 😀

I've seen AIX, and I think I even downloaded it, but haven't ever played it. I'll have to check it out though one of these days...

Are there any servers running it?

Well, they're making a hell of a lot of maps for a dead game otherwise 🙂

Yeah, I think some clan's having a AIX night this weekend as well. . .standard maps only. Let me go look.

    (Time passes.)

Oops, it's a German clan and (I assume) server. Still there are others.

A review of AIX I posted on Dual Clans forums, taken from a few different posts.

I played a few single player games over the past couple days. The gfx looked at least as good as any other BF2 Mod I've played, better than some. The weapons were well done. The AT kit has the rocket launcher, a six-shot grenade gun, mines, and a mortar! There are weapon pickups as well. The only one I tried, the sniper pickup, gives you a semi-auto, ten-shot rifle with 2 levels of magnification.

The bots are OK, maybe better than stock single-player. Sometimes they drive like they're brain-damaged. The bots can fly the choppers fairly well, though they might not do what a human would.

When the first game loaded, I had a feeling of dread as I watched the game display cycle through about 20 different NEW aircraft. I'm a ground-pounder, and I don't go for too much "death from above" action, since very often we don't have much to counteract that except other pilots. There are at least a few ground-only maps, and at least one infantry-only map, not counting whatever's in the three map packs that are available. I haven't played all the maps that even come with the game, and haven't yet installed the map packs I DL'ed.

Some aspects of this mod are better than any of the other BF2 mods I've played. I like the kits and weapons, and the gfx are good to very good (for a BF2-based game). It also lets me get some unscripted FPS action going without dealing with the Internet Kids. The bots don't bunny-hop, though they will drop to the ground and fire to gain accuracy if you're too far away. I ran up some high scores against the bots, but then I've done that against a server full of unskilled humans as well. Can't have it all - not yet, anyway. Then again, I was held to a fairly low score on one map I was unfamiliar with.

We DL'ed the 3 map packs for this over the last week, and found out they had brought back some of the old BF 1942 maps that we knew and loved. Eagle's Nest, Tubruk, Iwo Jima, and probably some others I didn't play or remember. Also, this mod added a bunch of new custom maps, some of which are REALLY cool. . .great added buildings, towers, oil platforms, etc. The scale of these maps were really quite impressive as well, and a few of them added quite a lot of vertical action to the gameplay, with multiple levels and paths to follow. The weapons were pretty damn cool, including chainguns, six-shot grenade guns, and mortars!

I even enjoyed playing the armor maps, as they were wide open, had plenty of vehicles, and even the tanks had some speed and maneuverability. Those that have gamed with me know how much I HATE using vehicles, so this is quite impressive.

This mod brings back a lot of the fun we used to have in BF 1942
. I believe that this is the best mod I've played for BF2, and I've played all of them.

After 2+ years, I'd given up hope that we'd ever get a mod that was in any way better than the original game. . .it seems like every mod-maker manages to shoot themselves in the foot in some manner. This mod has finally managed to make something that wasn't INFERIOR to the original.

They're big DL's, but all it takes is time and HD space. DL the mod the first night, DL one of the map packs each following night, and they'll be done by next weekend.

Just get the first three map packs, unless you get ambitious. I don't know if anyone is playing the newer ones.

I started all of the downloads last night and all but one crapped out. I'll take it a bit slower and try again.

    Who else is grabbing these?

I had some fun last night playing single player on my machine. I even got into the attack chopper and did some gunning, taking over as pilot and going back to base when I was out of ammo.

    Some AIX screenshots.

The first couple are from REFINERY. Gives you an idea of the scale on this one. Big.

The Oil Rig is in the first two pictures. Look at the third one to see it's size in relation to the rest of the map. . .it's in the upper right.

This one is as far up as you can go. . .it's overlooking two chopper pads.

I just thought this was cool looking. I think it's a cell tower.

Looking down from near the cell tower.

    Just a cool pic.

Cool new launcher/interface for AIX coming. . .

Also, they're working on AIX 2.0. . .it's been delayed by the upcoming official patch for BF2.

I got so busy, I forgot to download the rest of this.

I'll start again tonight. I really wish it hadn't timed out before.

    Anyone else getting this?

Well, one of the cool things about this is I don't have to ask, "Is anyone else getting this?" It's nice to jump on a server and have a few games, or just game on my own machine. . .no looking for clans and begging a game needed.

Edit- Didn't mean for that to sound snarky. I never even told you guys about the whole "looking for a clan" thing I went thru since November. It's hard to find guys you get along with, that you have things in common with, and who want to play the same games.

I'll download it, but that one FnF had shied me away from BF2 again for a while.

You'll feel better after beating up on some bots 🙂

I can honestly say I have never played any BF game against bots.

We used to only play bots. I only got away from them by playing UT when everyone else got sick of it and I started looking for internet games on my own.

Hard to go back to bots. I thought it might be fun, no cheaters or hacks to worry about, but after a few mins you realize your not really getting any challenge, kinda like drinking a glass of water and your still thirsty.

There was a thread that correlated with this. More to the point of personality, or a users gaming edge lost resulting from time, age, or length of time spent win/losing fps games. Beating up on bots can be a morale builder, but you quickly realize it will rarely carry back over to the live matches.

The real flaw of course is BF2's A.I.

I still love BF2 and will play it with you guys if you get a game together...
