This is really interesting to watch. One thing I noticed is they seemed to have taken away a lot of buildings and cover that existed previously, especially on Wake. I'm not too sure I'm happy about this......

I imagine, with all the destruction in frostBite(me) 2 its quite a load on the server - less buildings to destroy - less load?

Just viewing Kakand now - they moved the flags to more open areas too - 2nd U.S. flag is no longer to the left of the super tall sniper building but to the right out in the court yard.

Third flag is no longer at the stand alone building on the hill but down the hill in the open by the fountain - W I D E O P E N

Same for the flag by the RR tracks, move up to the ATV water crossing by the ramp in the open.

Bah, that is dissapointing, The sniper Building move just gets it out of some vehicle carnage, the others just put the flags in a such a way to make portions of the map unnecessary, maybe they are going to release alternate flag positions.. Otherwise that fountain is going to become sniper bait, as is the RR ramp.

Matter of fact those two points are now direct fire form sniper tower come to think of it.
Move the flag down the hill to the tower and move the flag up to bring in to line of sight at the ramp.

    Rat Bastards.

It amazes me how much more detailed BF3 is in comparison to BF2. I didn't play a ton of BF2 but seeing things back to back for comparison really shows how far the engine has come.

I have been meaning to go back and try out BF1942 for nostalgia reasons but I am afraid the gfx may just be terrible compared to what I am used to.

BF2 was the pinnacle of FPS -
    Different engines - BF2 = Frostbite / BF3 FrostBite 2
1942 is still a fun game.

To me the harder they try to make a good game - the further they're getting from actual fun.

Hard to say about the flag positions without knowing how big the capture circles are. On some maps, like operation firestorm, the circles are huge and you may be well away from the open and still able to cap.

BF3 does look a lot better than BF2 did that is for sure. If they could get the squad comms implemented and figure out how to do squad leader comms, I think we would have a game better than BF2 already. It certainly is more balanced and less buggy than BF2 was (and certainly BF42) at this early stage.

Overall, the new maps look pretty good and appear to be relatively faithful adaptations of the originals. I'm looking forward to all of them except Wake really. Wake still scares me as a place where infantry will just suffer as it has in every iteration of the map since the beginning. It will be interesting to see if the "we can't get off the ship" experience that often befell the US side will still be present too.

Since I have only been playing Recon and Support.. this, most definitely this.

It will either make me into a helo pilot or finally drop the trigger on the Engy.

Had a chance to play all four new maps last night and had a lot of fun for the most part. I think the changes that they made to Sharqui Penninsula make that the best map of the four with Oman a close second. They've added obstacles to make it more difficult for vehicles to maneuver and lots of cover and concealment for infantry. The addition of more buildings to move into and through also helps a lot as well.

On Wake I managed to lead a guy in a buggy that was trying to run me down over some mines that I had conveniently dropped right before he saw me. I wish I had captured it on video because when we saw each other I ran to my left and he turned clearly with the intent of running me down. I then ran back to the right just behind where I had left a mine and watched him explode right in front of me. I was giggling like a school girl I was so happy. Reminded me of the old frisbee tossing days of BF2 (before the mine and x-pack nerfs) and BF42. 😈

I noticed that you couldn't blow up the bridges anymore.. that was a sad moment.

So you can blow up everything but the bridges now? Seems pretty ironic that the one thing that you could blow up in BF2, you cannot any more. Too bad, it was a great defensive strategy.

I was just shooting it with tank rounds and lav cannons.. and tow missiles.. but maybe c4 would be the magic equation. Though that was on the Oman map, don't think I tried the Karkand.. I still have hope.

The LAV/Water Crossing on Karkand is crazy apparent now, much moreso than in BF2..

I've had a chance to play everything but Wake. I rather like the changes. I don't think anyone expected a verbatim port of them. Karkand is probably the one I like the changes least on... and yeah, it comes back mostly to those dang'd bridges not being destructible. It made for an excellent choke/rally area.

The TV station is as awesome as ever, maybe more so.
And playing Oman feels like saying hello to an old friend.

Note: You can easily jump from the roof to the flag at the TV station without using your shute... Stay close to the wall and you're fine... [for the recon peeps out there]

I can definitely understand this. To this day, I still think BF42 has been the most fun of the games with BFV a close second. BF2 Vanilla became boring very fast with BF2 Special Forces being the more interesting of the two for me.

BFBC2 was really boring to me. I loved the Vietnam expansion though.

BF3, even with the little I've played Karkand, I find it much more fun than Vanilla.

I feel the same way...oh the fun I had on 1942 and BFV, however I also have to think about my age and my perspective of what I consider fun. I have been meaning to install 1942 and trying it out for nostalgia reasons, but I can't help but think that after 10 years my value of "fun" has changed.

I only played BF1942, BFV, BF2, BF2142 and with each one I played less and less, however my time available for games became less and less...then entered BF3 and I am truely addicted and still blown away by the graphics.

I still get the feeling that it isn't "as much fun" as the older games though.

We did a short stint with BF42 a year or so back. In fact, i think we all picked up Secret Weapons expansion off Ebay too. While it was the game we knew and loved so much, somehow it wasn't quite what it once was. I think it was because there wasn't much of a community left. Those who were still playign the game were AMAZING at it. I think we more or less decided it was fun for a night, but lost it's luster due to age.

I still hold, if we put up our own server and threw some of our favorite custom maps on it, we could have a great time. I would be glad to host the server if no one else could. I think Atomm still has all the customs.

    👍

I still have all my server side mods - and notes on how to mode server side to make more custom changes to maps that users DO NOT have to download to play custom content.

Old School FNF - would have to eBay BFV as my disk met an untimely death.

    scudnades!

i recall many a day killed, just exploring your custom maps duck.
was a bucket full of fun.

problem would be to get enough folks on the server to make it worth it.
still working shifts, so im not that reliable.

Bubba, I'm afraid that the custom maps wouldn't hold up either. I think it was one of those in the moment things.

In working on the site upgrade, I was going through the database and ran across the reviews I had of the custom BF42 maps we played. That brought back a lot of great memories. I can't believe I had the time to go through all those maps, update the server, play, then write reviews about it.

Not only that, but we were ALL playing nightly and for an hour or so at least.

I might be getting back into playing with you guys on PC...

    Maybe...

    If you are lucky...

Couple weeks before I know if I am going to order parts...

Wife might be joining in too...

wooohoo, and that post wasn't even a dig at you... errrrr I mean

    meh

ephil, it would be awesome to see you back in game again. Maybe we could suck Goose in once in a while. He did buy BF3 at least.

And there is this really cool game that is free to play called DDO. 😈

After leaving WoW, I have found that my time is best spent outside of MMO's 🙂

And where did you hear that before.......
