DigitalBattle wrote:A tipster sent us PDF document which looked like an outline of features for Battlefield 3. The three page document is apparently prepared for investors which should get it by December of this year. It details basic features of BF3, and are as listed:

    * Release in late 2008
    * Powered by “Frostbite DX”
    * Set in year modern day (just like BF2, ed.)
    * Will ship with 8 maps, each supporting up to 40-players per team
    * Two playable factions, NATO and MEC (Middle Eastern Coalition)
    * Same “ticket-based” gameplay style as before
    * Maps are mostly urban, based in Middle East
    * Squads and Commanders are present, introduced are “Battalions” which consist of three to four squads.
    * Five playable classes; Sniper, Assault, Engineer, Medic and Support
    * Will feature 48 different vehicles (24 for each faction)
    * Will feature 34 different weapons (17 for each faction) and another 22 unlocks (for both factions), in total 56 different weapons.
    * Other unlocks include different types of ammunition, body armor, helmets, camouflage and accessories.
    * Possible public beta in “Summer 2008″
    * Online stats tracking, awards and “real world ranks”
    * “Soldier” feature, looks like MMO-styled characters and avatars
    * Ranked servers will be available for resellers weeks before the game ships (for testing, apparently, ed.)
    * In-game replay and recording feature
    * VoIP, friends list, in-game IM-client and “extensive clan support”
    * Built-in auto software updater (no more patches!, ed.)
    * Widows Vista and OS X (no XP?!, ed.)
    * Announcement and teaser trailer in January 2008.

A map is mentioned by name, called “Baghdad Burning”, and appears to be a massive urban map, similar to BF2’s very popular “Strike at Karkand”. The game is powered by “Frotbite DX”, currently the Frostbite engine is used in Battlefiled: Bad Company on PS3 and Xbox 360. The “DX” could refer to DirectX (10?), a PC version of the Frostbite engine.

Please note that none of this is confirmed, we’ve emailed a few people from EA and DICE (Battlefield developers) and will update the article as soon as we know more. Also note that we cannot, for obvious (legal) reasons, release the PDF document. Stay tuned for more info.

Sounds like BF2 on their new engine.
Vista only????? Shooting themselves in the foot with that one.

Can't say that I'm surprised or excited....

I was looking at getting a new system by summer 2008. I've been toying with the idea that I might skip Vista entirely. I've heard that there might be a new Windows in a couple years, and if I'm building a new system NEXT year, I might just weather the Vista thing and jump on the next one. Vista doesn't have the appeal that XP did when it was released.

If more games besides HALO 3 are bailing on XP, it might make the "avoid Vista" thing problematic.

Further investigation reveals that EA DICE owns the domain “battlefield3.com”. Still no reply from DICE. Stay tuned for further updates.

FYI, XP SP3 is going to back port a few of the more famous features of Vista. No word on Direct X. I have a feeling Microsoft is going to move DX 10 to XP once they announce the next OS as they know it will kill Vista sells.

Looks like they finally get it though. As much as I am pissed at EA/DICE, I would play an Urban Battlefield. But only 8 maps? What kind of crap is that?

I bet the server browser doesn't work...
although maybe it will work in beta then be broken with the 1st patch

    BF3=Don't give a s#$%.

Thank you, that is all. I'm not fond on dealing with EA's BS again.

I love the game play of Battlefield for the most part, although certain parts of the game frustrate me to no end. Mostly it's the business practices and that sort of crap that irk me. I hold a small amount of hope that they learned something from the Bf2 and and 2142 experience.

I bet if you look at your time played, I'd guess that 75% or more of your time was spent on 8 or fewer maps. Also, 8 maps means that they can sell you more later 😀

I have no intention of getting Vista at this point so if it is a Vista only release I won't be getting it. Otherwise, I'm sure that they'll sucker me in somehow 🙄

A first for Microsoft is they are now allowing people to "downgrade" back to XP.

Also Vista SP1 is coming out soon an is supposed to fix a lot of issues and add some new items.
I have not done any Vista upgrades at work here and am holding off as long as I can.

Personally if I was building a new system I would set it up as a duel boot system for both OS. I may still do this at some point.

So far vista on my laptop is working great. Except my damn BSOD when trying to tether it to my Treo as a modem. I upgraded it from XP.

I will not put in on my game rig though except maybe a duel boot as mentioned above.

I will probably get BF3 as I really love the series even with EA's BS. I still like 2142 and have spent hundreds of hours in BF2 so...

If it's Vista only, I am probably out as well. Even though I can run it, I choose not too.

I'm with Sarge. I'll get suckered into this. Actually, the mention of Urban has my interest. If we could only get them to support custom map downloads as well as patches and CTF, it would be golden....

I hate EA way to much to even look at BF3. Unless they can hire some better programmers to make it look and load as well as QW or UT, I'm opting out. Hell if it has to load on top of Vista, God help you all.

I guess I just cannot forgive the 2142 ripoff. Fuck them, I'll have UT3 and TF.

Actually he didn't, I had just let it drop ;p

In all fairness, 03' was not broken. It supported many more tournaments than 04' did, and was alot more popular with the euro crowd at the time. 04' changed the movements and speed (toned down both). 04' also added 3 or 4 game types and incorporated voip for the first time. Remember the first 3 patches for 04'? All corrections to the movements and keybinds to try to appease 03' users.

I'm sure there are more reasons, etc, but I wasn't a 03 fan just because I didn't have broadband then.

Truth be told, I've never seen a version of Unreal that came close to being poorly programmed or unpolished. If I stopped giving you grief though, you'd think I was mad at you 😉

We all know the story by now. BF2 is the best game ever, put out by the worst publisher ever. . .well, short of Paragon Software 😀 . If the UT ppl had the rights to it, the Battlefield series would take over the world. . .or we'd be fragging in Lego-themed desert maps. 😀

What rip off??? I do not mean to argue but back that up! 2142 runs just fine for me and it is a ton of fun. I have had no problems with it and I like it a lot. So how was that a rip off??

Just because you do not have a rig capable of running a game does not meant it sucks.

Just because you have a bug up your ass against EA and everything they produce, does not mean it is all a rip off. Do I agree with the way they do things and the bugs they leave in? Hell no. but you cannot say that BF2 and 2142 is a rip off, the games are tons of fun even with the crap attached.

If you disagree if they are fun, that is cool but they are not a rip off for those of us that like it.

I agree that 2003 was a total rip off BTW no matter what you say. It was way more a rip off than 2142 could ever be.

I bought the damn thing to never really play it. 2004 came out within a year making the 2003 a complete rip off for me, total waist of money.

yadda, yadda, yadda. I spent 22hrs playing (IF you can call it that) BF2142. I'd bet a c note you haven't spent half that time ONLINE with UT03'.

Everytime I say FUCK EA, you can only comeback with some shit about UT.. Fine.. I can't get through to you. Its apples and oranges. Support EA all you want, I'm totally pissed and will never buy a piece of shit from them until they wakeup and listen to the consumers.

Maybe when BF3 comes out you can brag on its merits, not tear down its competition. EA had a great thing going with 1942, but they just screwed it up every greedy step along the way to 2142.

ps. dust that old copy of 03' off. There are still several servers running in Europe. Might just resurrect some of that wasted money your beefed about from 5 years ago 😉

Don't make me put you two in separate corners.....

I am not too thrilled about 2142 either. In fact, I think BFV was a better game than 2142. If they would have allowed enough time to release one last patch to fix the stupid Huey dominance problem, it would have been nearly perfect.

I'm not too happy with 2142 overall and feel I wasted my money.

  17. #18
My question is, was there any support, both from EA or the community for 2142? Never seemed like it. There was almost never a time with more 2142 player than bf2 players. Seems EA released it and ran. It was just to add bottom line.

I'm gonna give it another go when I get a new system. Seems my 3 ghz p4, 2 gig of paired memory modules, and my x800xl is too weak to play it effectively at ANY setting. Very disappointing considering the game's over a year old now. I smell sloppy programming. 🙁

I'd certainly give that Star Wars mod for 2142 a shot if I could. I might still, but I have an idea it's not gonna run any better.

Dude I just get tired of the same old same old BF2 bashing. UT is a great Fu*&ing game and I NEVER said otherwise. UT with re-directing maps etc.. is great. You know I wish EA would learn some sh*& from them.

I am just saying that I love BF2 and I am saying that 2142 is not a rip off to a lot of people. You are he one that always bashes anything in the franchise every chance you get, it gets old for me.

If you and Atomm hate 2142, cool, it is not for everyone.

    Whatever.....

Let me clarify. I could have loved 2142 the best in the series. I really got soured over the way it was screwed up. The video, sound, and of course settings were all screwed up.. this was for something built on the same engine, but NOT the patches for BF2. Its exasperating to say the least.

Now, EA has fresh competition. QW:ET and TF2 are a breeze to run, and thats on my 1yr old piece of shit. EA knows they have been dumping shit on the market and are now 'leaking rumors of BF3'. Kinda reminds me of an old hag trying anything to keep her husband from leaving her.

See this is my entire point!! It was screwed up for YOU!!!

I have had no issues at all with 2142 except that lame ass not being able to set my forward as my right mouse button thing.

My video and sound work perfect. I also have not crashed to desktop THAT often though any is bad.

You associate problems YOU have with a game and they are just crap. Well if it runs fine for me is it still crap?

Should it better if it could be, hell yes. Should it be as stable as UT is, hell yes but it is not like it is crap for everyone. You have problems and then the entire game, company and franchise are crap and I hear about it all the time. Gets old for me, sorry. 😛

People have different hardware configurations and nothing is perfect thats all.

I will shut up now if you will. 😉

What's your 2142 acct name? I'd like to see how many hours you've racked up reseting your mouse and recovering from desktop crashes. A real measure of your patience for EA. 😉 If they would only apply the FIRST BF2 patch to fix the control issues, I'd been alot less sour... oh wait, they fired the patch team in Canada didn't they. Its also my fault that I dont' have a $300+ video card... shame on me.

Maybe I resent the fact I have to keep 3 gaming rigs running in the same house, which coincidentally only have problems with EA based games. My daughter sits for hours waiting for her Sims2 loadouts and my son tossed my copy of 2142 back on my desk a day after I gave it to him.

Things that run great include HL2, UT, Halo, Farcry, COD, Fear, Prey, etc, etc. Only EA fails to run satisfactory.

I know we play devils' advocates with each other, and this is all in good fun, but it makes for some interesting points if your not tearing down the competition to make your points.

Oh, btw, I know how to hook up your house generator. I'd just need you to be home in case I got electrocuted 🙂

The Battlefield series is one of the best, if not THE best, multi-player FPS series ever.

EA sucks with the power of a thousand black holes. Any other decent game company would've NEVER had these problems, or at worst, any such issues would've been addressed quickly and effectively, and NOT carried over to sequels(2142).

I love BF2. I have nothing but loathing and disgust for EA. They buy up the rights to use the sports team and player names, effectively preventing competition, then release new versions every year with minor changes. They buy up other gaming companies and ruin/drop their popular games.

EA's offenses are legion, and well-documented. They have an institutionalized, long-standing policy of suck and assholeness. They are the gaming world version of the Pittsburgh Pirates. They have a monopoly on sports-themed games, they rake in money, make promises, but never do enough to deliver a quality product.

Everything EA touches is worse for their involvement. Everything they do would be better done by almost any other reputable company, with the possible exception of raking in money. . .just like the Pirates. That said, my first statement still stands: The Battlefield series is one of the best, if not THE best, multi-player FPS series ever. If only it were in someone else's hands.

Hate the sinner, love the game 🙂

I'm not one to defend EA. However, I do believe DICE should share in some of this blame. You see, DICE has always been known as a company that has pushed the bar of FPS's. However, they have done so in a very careless and haphazard way.

Before BF1942, there was a little known game called Codename: Eagle. It made Gamespy's top 10 games that you've never played. The write up talked about all the late nights they spent playing the game and how much they loved it. It also talked about how poorly the game ran, even on their mega gaming PC's on a local LAN. While it was fun, the game was beyond the technology. BF42 was actually built on that same technology and had a lot of the same ideas.

The problem is that technology was flawed from the very beginning. The game engine's DICE creates', while they are some of my favorite of all time, are in fact some of the worst written game engines around. The code is sloppy. It doesn't do a good job of utilitizing the technology available today. And the worst offense is the net code or rather, the lack of any sort of netcode. This alone can made the experience frustrating beyond all belief. And DICE doesn't care. They make that very clear, even without EA's help.

So, when you knock EA for the problems with the Battlefield series, remember it was EA that pushed the product out the door before it was ready. However, it was DICE that created a framework that simply wasn't up to the level it should have been. This is why iD, Epic and Valve are leaders in the FPS genre. They put a lot of energy into the game engine before the game is developed. They focus on utilizing the technology at hand and they understand how important the netcode is to the gaming experience.

Oh and I have to say that BF42 and BFV are some of my favorite games of all time. BF2 has been a big disappointment and just doesn't rank up there. But, you have to keep in mind that prior to BF42, the last FPS I was able to play without getting sick was Quake II and even that was rough.

You know I am not really bashing you man. UT is a GREAT game and in no post have I said otherwise. I said I perfer the BF2 series but I agree with Doc. BF2 is the best game with the worst company running it period.

I already bought the switch. That damn thing was $300 at Home Depot, sheesh 🙂

There is a game called Battlefield: Bad Company or something similar that will be console only. It's the first game from DICE using the new "frostbite" engine.

This was posted on PBF today. Most interesting part is the stuff highlighted in yellow imo.

Planet Battlefield wrote:As mentioned in the previous news post, EA DICE is looking for community managers. I thought it was worth pointing out some interesting pieces of information in the job posting.

First of all, one of the job postings is for an "undisclosed project" which rules out Battlefield: Bad Company and Mirror's Edge.

    Primary responsibilities
The Community Manager is responsible for planning and executing a strategy for day to day communications to the world wide community of a yet undisclosed project.

The second point that caught my attention is that it mentions updating the Battlefield portal as a responsibility, plus this job opening was posted on the Battlefield portal so it's probably safe to say this is a Battlefield related job.

    - Planning and executing player programs including events and organized play in close cooperation with the marketing team and EA territory teams
    - Communication with EA stakeholders about community features
    - Updating the battlefield.com portal

This I found to be quite interesting as well since as we know Battlefield 2 / 2142 mods are not allowed to be ranked.

    Other responsibilities
    - Monitor and communicate with existing mods / look for possible mods to give ranked server support etc
    - Map making competitions
    - Q&A for Clans / Mod-groups / media / PR
    - Maintain community wish list documents for potential future title updates
    - Manage communication and feedback process for public beta tests

The start date is listed for February 1st so I am sure we will be hearing something soon. This defiantly has some strong hints pointing to the next Battlefield game and it doesn't seem to be Battlefield: Bad Company. Could this be Battlefield 3?
  36. #37
I deffinately think they are going to continue to push out Battlefield games. The real question is this too little, too late?

I mean, think about this for a bit. How many Battlefield Community Managers have they had? Remember Ben? How about Lawrence aka BFPirates Lead? Then there was that other guy they sent out a big press release about, then we never heard anything? After that, it was some shmoo who worked the UK Forums.

Let's not forget the hugely promoted prerelease BF2 Mod event held at the EA headquarters and all the promises they made. How the tools were going to be the best ever, yet to this day, they never actually finished them or even offered final documentation, much less the fact that the official forums are still hosted by a third party.

Good luck to whatever smuck takes this job. He'll be ass raped by the community, then sodimized by EA on the way out the door......

Thanks for posting that Sarge.... It was a good stress reliever.... 😈

Yeah EA talks a big game... Someday it'd be nice to see them live up to it
