1UP has been playing the BF Heroes Beta and doesn't seem too excited about it.....

You know the type: He's the dude who has "taunt" bound to half of the buttons on his keyboard. If he scores, his elated flailing is almost guaranteed to trigger a superhilarious "chest bump" or "whistle" animation (if not forward you a Rick Astley YTMND).

Now imagine That Dude in a dinky panzer with his fat finger hovering over a repair power that'll bring his armor back from the brink within seconds. Where 5-year-olds have to resort to "nuh-uh, you missed me!" this jerk can go one better: "Sure, you hit me five or six or seven or eight times. I got a button for that."

SE: Normally, I translate that into "I think I maybe might have hit this dude, and he isn't dead." Not this time. That Dude is indestructible -- or he can undo damage faster than the two of us deal it. And he does taunt. He hops into the cupola where we can see him, too. Ever hear a kid ask "Guess what?" and answer "Chicken butt!" until you think Daddy Day Care was comedic genius? Welcome to the world of preset taunts.

One option remains: Quit out (a necessity that players accustomed to changing classes midmatch find annoying) and create a new character with the same overpowered specs.

RM: Good thing we're used to the character-creation process. Before running into the panzer ace, we had to whip up new Gunners to imitate Heroes' other broken setup. Combine the most powerful machine gun in the game with an accuracy perk and the lumbering Gunner becomes a powerhouse. High damage, absurd accuracy, tons of health, a rocket launcher, and a shield power -- yup, it's a DICE game.

They definitely seem to have trouble figuring out a rock, paper, scissors approach to things. Of course it isn't an easy task to "balance" a game, but they've got to do better.

Did they ever release that promised BF patch?

not yet. I'm guessing we'll see it in 2010 or so along with new maps for BFV and an add-on for 2142

I can't wait for the new BFV Maps. My guess is in 2010 when they release the patch they break the server browser.

Man, things are looking grim on the FPS front.....

In the past year, we've got Quake Wars, UT3, COD4, Front Lines Fuel of War. It seems like we're in the 'incremental upgrade' time, and none of the incremental upgrades have been all that great. COD4 looks GREAT, has a lot of server options, and seems like the most popular of the group so far. Still reminds me of a death-match though. It needs more players and more teamwork design. Someone should make a BF2 mod for it!

Odd that we've actually had quite a few games released in the past year, and Atomm would make that statement. . .and I can't argue with it.

Think I'll go play the AIX mod. 🙂

What they need to do, is take BF2, add the COD4 movement and upgrade system and call it BF3.

O and don't forget they need to pry it out of ownership of EA. I swear EA is the biggest problem with that franchise.

I dunno, DICE is fairly stubborn about certain aspects of the game. Remember, it was DICE that made the Air Power in BFV dominating and refused to fix it.

Also, remember it was DICE that refused to put in a server redirect to allow custom maps and mods to auto download.

And let's not forget that it was DICE that designed the game engine with the most piss poor net code of any game out there. And yet, they never learn and continue to develop new engines with terrible net code.

And I believe it was DICE that made the Random Deviation in BF2.

As much as EA has fubar'd BF, DICE has done their part to help.

I didn't realize all of that was Dice decisions.

It's funny Sarge and I were talking abuot this thread while leaving work yesterday. When I asked about the patch for bf2 I went to their website to see if there was info. insstead I was greeted by messages about the mods Project reality and Forgotten hope. It was ironic (moronic?) to see them supporting the mod community now after initially saying they would then not only not supporting the mods, but making it hard for them to complete the mods by changing things.

It's even funnier that they are supporting mods considering they never actually released fully working mod tools. Almost every mod has had to learn to work around all the known issues and bugs.

We were better off in BF42 when some modder created the tools out of a love for the game.
