BF2 Mod of our Own

    Hmmm.

I'm starting to think that if we're ever going to get a game we LIKE, we're going to need to make it ourselves.

I understand modding for BF2 is quite painful, but I was wondering what it would take to make several MINOR changes that address some of the biggest complaints:
    • Fix it so that you can't jump more than twice in a row without waiting a couple seconds
    • make ~half-second delay after proning to shoot
    • make ~half-second delay going into/out of scope mode, so that we don't see the MEC semi-auto "assault snipers" - make them ACT like snipers
    • tweak the AA
    • tweak the damage required to take out attack choppers and planes
    • slightly reduce the damage caused by the attack chopper guns, or at least make them EQUAL. The grenade-machine-gun the MEC chopper has is ridiculous
    • reduce alert distance for planes/choppers WRT ground targets
    • make the transport chopper machine guns a bit more effective, and EQUAL to each other(US guns are better now)
    • slow down arty charge rate 25-50%

And a few other things I'm sure we could come up with. Seems like some of these things would just be variable changes, others would require a bit of code.

In other words, instead of making a full-scale mod, just make our own minor changes to the things that irk us, and much of the rest of the community, the most. I'm rather concerned that Quake Wars is not going to be the answer, and may not be out until Christmas at this rate. Frontlines is even further off.

If we got REAL ambitious, we could do that intermediate version of NO VEHICLES the community wanted: NO AIR POWER - and by we, I mean someone smarter than me. 🙂

Doc, I still think a city based mod with vehicles, no jets and a few helo's now and then would do very well in BF2. And I tried to set it up initially. Look in the private map section. You'll see I was able to get something set up that looked like a mod.

However, once we started digging into it, we ran into major problems. For one, our mod was based on a duplicate copy of the original game, then modified with custom maps. This was a huge problem! While it looked like I was able to duplicate the code as a new mod, the truth later revealed that I was missing a lot of the code, so much in fact that it was fruitless trying to do anything with the code.

But, maybe things have changed. Maybe the modding community has figured out how to take the existing codebase and duplicate it, rather than starting from scratch.

I am willing to look into this if others are.....

Used to be able to do that with BFV and BF42... Seems those are the type of things mods have had trouble with

Well, that pretty much spells out in brown shit-scented ink why EA sucks.

I agree with your first sentence, btw.

If you know some people to talk to, or someplace to post the question, what could it hurt to ask? If it's still a bear, we just say, "Fuck it." Do you know the guys who did the BF2 capture-the-flag mod? It was pretty close to the original, with the addition of the CTF stuff.

Maybe we put it on the back-burner until Quake Wars. That should be easier to mod anyway.

    Any further interest/ideas/opinions on this?

I could ask my old clan-mates for info, but they would only know about where to score pot, and how much Jack they can drink before they see double reticules in their scope 🙁

I don't have a mod background or contacts, you see.

When people over on FARK start their photoshopping contests, very often someone will remove the background, or leave JUST the background, as an aid to others. This is called a "blank". I wonder if modders haven't run into the issue of needing the base code, and have solved it. If so, someone might be agreeable to helping us do it, or perhaps even slipping us a copy of it - a "blank" to work with.

BTW, Atomm, I sent you a PM days ago, and also sent you a file. I've received no notification of the receipt of either.

I like the idea. I posted a bunch of info in our private forums. I haven't had the time to sit down and try to create the base mod. I did some searching for a "blank" as you called it. I didn't find anything, but that could be one of those things where I am calling it something different than someone else.

I also posted a link to a bunch of custom maps that might be a possible way to put this together.

Got the email. I thought I responded to the PM. I'll get that posted today. Thanks!

Glad you got the file. The mod is going to be a chore, if we do anything about it, I know. I was wondering if you had some good BF2 modding forums bookmarked, or knew ppl who were still active in it. Might be nice to talk to someone to see what we're up against.

    I'll go do some Goggling.

    Cool.

A lot of these guys are known to us from previous BF games. Cajunwolf, especially was a central figure in all things BF. I believe Raze even asked him a few questions and he was always helpful.

I've signed up and plan on getting involved.

The official editor forum is a bit outdated, but a lot of the people who do drop by now and then are with some of the better mods, PR, USI, BF2 Pirates, EOD, Etc....

My biggest problem with the editor site is a lot of the info is outdated. Things seemed to have changed a lot since the early days of BF2.
