Yes it is a shame I joined a Battlefield clan thinking the members would actually play the next game in the series.

Things that make you go hmmmmmm.

I only read the first page, but I find it interesting that the main thing everyone seems to love is it has better infantry combat..... Hmmmm......

Nope, not going to do it.....

I almost caved a week or so ago. I was at Wal-Mart and checked the price. . .$49.99!?!?!?!

    NO EFFIN' WAY! ! !

Dude, that's a $29.99 mod, tops. I passed. Why does everything EA does call to mind this picture?

I'll buy it, if someone finds it for $29.99 (and I have the cash at that time)

You know just because it uses a similar engine and is a similar game, obviously, does not make it JUST a mod. it is more than that, at least IMHO.

I bought UT2003 then UT2004 came out. UT2003 just went away. I paid $50 for a beta test game of the next one. That SUCKED!!!!

Life is short, you move on man. I simply bought UT2004 and played it and had fun.

Mod, not mod, who cares. it is a fun game. If you want to wait for it to get cheaper, I respect that. I will say though that all of this boycotting is not giving me a warm fuzzy.

    Whatever.... 😉

The UT2003 thing sucked big-time. . .I remember when that happened, and I was glad that I was a slow-adopter. . .really, it was because my machine was old and I was afraid to upgrade.

I stand by my EA statement, however.

$50 is at least $20 too much. . .and yeah, part of that is because $20 is a lot of money to me. . .plus, I'm SURE there will be next to no mods for 2142 ever, so what I get out of the box is all the value I will ever get.

I'm gonna look into getting patched up with the latest FREE mods, and maybe that will provide some much-needed variety. Maybe we should start a sticky with the popular mods and links to their latest patches. . .when we do a new message search, we can see when a mod has a new update and we'll have a link to the updates. That Project Reality update was 1.6 GIGS, and I had to install a torrent prg to get it. . .not the easiest patch I ever did, but at that size, torrent was the only way to go.

Atomm, if you read the rest of that link, some ppl had different opinions of 2142 and the vehicles.

When you say similar engine, you mean Same exact engine, right? And when you say similar game you mean same game with different skins. The only difference I see besides skins is the spyware they couple with the $50 game. That spyware is why I am boycotting it. Now remember in essence there is no difference besides spyware/adware and a virus except you install adware/spyware knowingly. So if you would like to install spyware and adware on your computer, enjoy it, but it's something I spend too much time trying to isnure doesn't end up on my machine to knowingly install it.

as for your continual digs about joining a battelfield clan, does this mean when EA releases "Battlefield: give us your money for this steaming pile of shit" I am still required to buy it? ;-)

Okay man tell me what spy-ware then? This has already been discussed to death and proven, so far, to be untrue yet you and others continue to bring it up. I have only ever seen one ad in the game so far for Intel chips and it is totally non interfering in the game.

I also disagree that it is the exact game with new skins. It is different enough to me then okay? I actually like it that it is similar as I like the way BF2 plays and this is a step forward. not a leap but a step.

UT2004 is not THAT different from UT. It has better graphics but is the same basic game and plays about the same. The differences are mostly cosmetic there and this is not always a bad thing now is it. i did not hear how it was a mod.

You hate EA and everything they stand for. Fine. Whatever the hell brings you joy my friend, hate away.

I have never and will never complain if you don't want to play a game I like. I never said anything about UT. I think even DiCE says it's the same engine. And FYI probably 90% of all games I own are EA, I just wish they took the time and caring to produce another game as good as 1942, Until they do, I am probably out.

I hear there are good things on the horizon.... Oh and that Project Reality mod is a lot of fun. It has more teamwork than anything I've ever played. If you don't work as a team, it's too freaking hard to be fun. 😛

Playing some mods sounds good. Maybe that will appease everyone and we can get back to playing as a team for a change.

Man it is not about you not wanting to play it because you may not like it, it is the absolute hatred that comes across against anything EA without thinking of just playing a game for fun as a team.

It is the same thing when I bought Euro forces. I thought, wow 3 new BF2 ranked maps we could all enjoy. Instead it turned into a month of bitching about it and EA and how they suck and I am not paying $10 just for a few new maps etc..... man.... I was shocked when some people did break down and played some AF.

Sorry man, okay? I just get a bit sick of the one sidedness sometimes. I honestly am not meaning to come across as a jerk, I do not like the direction we are heading, thats all.

Point of Existance is pretty good, and Project Reality LOOKS good, but it sucks to be new. It IS VERY MUCH HARDER, I ended up shooting my squad more than the enemy. 30 second respawn time + 1 second every time u die, so halfway thru the rd, you're taking 45 seconds to respawn. . .I'm only gonna play that if I have a squad in Teamspeak.

Speaking of this, after Friday night, we should get back to that discussion we tabled before the holidays. With the newer mods that are out(and are due out soon), we may have something new to do.

The only thing I like better about BF2 is we support it here as a team. Otherwise, 2142 was a waste of money, as face it, a team game without a team isn't worth much. The most I've ever seen is one GRB at a time, and to just pub with this game or BF2, I'd rather watch the news. The infantry is certainly much more fun on certain city maps, but forget that on any Titan ones.

Unlike BF, UT 03 and 04' are different beasts. There were a shitload of complaints about 03' not being friendly for newcomers. So instead of releasing bookoo patches for it, Epic decided to rewrite it, include more gametypes, plus they revamped the engine to handle VOIP and doubled the graphics. All ingame movements and weapons hits were reengineered to level the playing field, and they introduced Onslaught mode. Unlike EA, Epic offered several tradeup options from UT99' and UT03' to 04, like half off for the manual cover of 03'.

Comparing EA to Epic is apples to oranges.

I really think any chase of mods for BF2 is a waste of time, and will further reduce our BF2 playing times together as a team. Promote the hell out of it for what, a couple of hours once?? 6 GRB'ers might showup with no pubbers to balance the maps... no thanx. At least get a cheap unranked server for that purpose. Why waste a Friday NF for a mod??

If you guys want a new mod, I'd suggest 2142. At least it has company support at the moment, however you want to define how much EA listens to users 🙂
  14. #15
We have an unranked server at no extra charge. We just have to switch from ranked to unranked.

The reason we are so big into mods is because mods can put new life into a game.

    Getting back to the topic:

I tell you what, say what you want but the teamwork is better in 2142 than BF2 usually. You get extra points for staying with the squad and the entire squad gets points for working together. There is some cool stuff they added. With the Net bat system and squad upgrades, it is very cool that way. I was playing the other day and a member in the squad had it so we all got an infield upgrade and we all saw the enemy highlighted with a red triangle or mark. Same goes with vehicles if a squad member has that ability. It made knowing where they were a lot easier and much more fun. Also with infield upgrades you get to choose an unlock that works temporarily. That is cool as you get to play with stuff to see if you want it as your own unlock.

I am unsure what Lexx meant by "The infantry is certainly much more fun on certain city maps, but forget that on any Titan ones.", but I like the Titan mode as the Arty hardly bothers you at all on the ground since it is for vehicles really. The conquest mode arty sucks a bit more as it seems to go on twice as long than BF2 and will kill you.

The air power is hardly preset at all in either mode. I have yet to have a game in 2142 where I seemed to get pwned by air. The only small exception seems to come from the titan itself. Sometimes people sit in it raining bullets down on you near a flag if the titan is above it. That is easy to avoid though as the titan's location is always known so you avoid it or hide and a lot of people do not sit in it using the titans guns anyway.

So far the play seems mostly grounded. A lot of good infantry play. I stay on the ground 90+% of the time. The rest is me grabbing the game version of the Black-hawk and landing someplace near flags. The cool thing is that vehicle then becomes a spawn beacon. Also the SL beacons rule as you can now be a SL, slap that down and get into the fight. You do not have to just lay there when you have that as the squad can spawn on the beacon as long as it is there. really adds to the teamwork and strategy.

I had a few games where they were just pounding us with armor and walkers. We had a few AT guys working together, including me. We got into a mode of one fires and moves to the side, the other guys then fires while you are re-loading, then you fire while he is re-loading. It worked really well.

I can just imagine if we actually had a squad of GRB members playing.

I am thinking this may be true. Even if we play mods, will we get enough people playing it to have fun?
I do not want a night of it being maybe 6 to 8 of us and a few pubbers.

Maybe we should plan that for other nights and stick to normal games for Fridays.

Paladin, that is a very well thought out post on why you like BF2142. It goes right with what I was reading and makes me consider getting the game. I'm still waiting for the price to drop, but I'm considering it.

As for FNF, what difference does it make if we play a mod as long as we are all together and having a good time?

Don't mind me sometimes man. See I am stuck in between wanting a certain gaming experience and just playing for the heck of it. The later is not always a bad thing but I really prefer the former so I get a bit over zealous sometimes posting about this and that trying to change things up.
  18. #19
BF2142 has quite a few beneficial marks in terms of teamwork/squad management, as long as you get SLs who use them, which is not hard as long as the SL is not a brand new player without the knowledge of Squads=Points. The engine has more of a calmer speed set to it, its not instant death if you see a guy after he sees you.. most of the time.

BF2 is still a bit unrealistically fast paced to me, attempting to snipe is sometimes like trying to flick a tootpick at a squirrel hopped on speed while being chased by a rapid wombat covered in HCL and other times it is closer to watching the grass grow with your own blood because the guy with the full auto machine gun can shoot you more times than you can shoot him and from the same distance. Though both games sometimes share this designation, and both are quite enjoyable.

    BF2+Mods
Project Reality did to squads what 2142 did to them.. and then more, much more. It is not as user friendly, and if you don't go with someone who knows the ropes or read about what all is going on in the help files then you might as well get used to playing solitaire while you wait to spawn. Death is common at times, though there are those glorious moments when you can sneak up to a mounted Machine gun, that has a nice accuracy, and mow down a few individuals. Then again there is a high likelyhood of getting killed by friendlies. As long as you can tell the suits/uniforms of the enemies you are good. The limited kit systems work out great, the change in kit loadouts so there is more variety and purpose/reality to them is nice. Even the hidden kits you can find in some of the maps are pleasant.

POE I have played a few times, they put more emphasis on vehicles/tanks in some of their maps, the kits laying out in the random areas/hidden areas of the maps are nice, but never really got into it. Might have been the laptop didn't push it well enough.

Overall I would have to say that I would like to see our server, when its ping is low...(god knows why my ping has been dropping lately, might be my network adapter my on-board chip is known to be poor but it might also be an issue with my router)...run a mod now and again, Project Reality almost always has a few maxed out servers, it wouldn't hurt to set ours up with the PR mod for a few days out of the week, or even rotate it with the POE mod, two days of each then a weekend of WTFE and a nice FNF of vanilla, though if we got a few people on PR on a FNF we would have a better chance of seeing a full house for the number of players/server ratio.

Good ponts Silent..... I've enjoyed the two nights I played with you guys.

See I am stuck in between wanting a certain gaming experience and just playing for the heck of it.

I'll let you in on a little secret..... All of us and you are not that much different. We have been doing exactly that since BF42.

In the past, we changed things up as often as we could to keep it fun and new. We always ran the latest mods because that's when they get the most playtime. It's almost like getting a new start on getting the server going. This was the trick to making things work. Even when it gets to feel tired and old, you have something new to learn and focus on, if only for a few weeks.

So, don't beat us up for trying to do what we've done in the past. It works. It's just that BF2 has yet to turn out the number of quality mods like BF42 did. Then there is the fact that making a map is way beyond hopeless. Raze & Lou kept making incredible maps to keep us entertained. I miss that more than anything......

Well sheesh man don't rush me 🙂. I already have the software picked out for world creation, the other option is to use terrain models I can pick up from USGS.. and other sites for free for some real world baseplates.. nothing like playing in your own back yard they say.. now that I have a new job am learning a different software and perhaps might get into 3DS as Autodesk seems to have incorporated a multitude of the 3DS design/functionality into their software. So there may be hope... hell with the 3d modeling software (Inventor) I can already do a number of things just need to figure out the portability of the files/translations. But then again I have to find the time and get into it... oh yeah there is another bonus I am finally coming home before the sun comes up, yea me.

No doubt... always wondering what they had up their sleeve. I mean we used to have a packed server and people hoppin in when a spot opened and saing they had been tryign to get in for 30 min. Miss having Raze and Lou giving us another adventure

    Hey boys!
Go out and get that dam game it's tons O' fun and you get unlocks relatively fast. For the 50 hrs I've played I figure my cost is going down, I'm at less than a buck an hour now. For the entertainment it's worth it.
I have maybe played BF2 2-3 times since I bought it. I usually only play titan mode, where team work is the only way to win. And whatever else the Pal and Cold said.
Going by BokenBones in 2142 as Hymen_Slaughter was either too long or taken.

Froogle.com.........Not sure if a Google spinoff is too corporate for some of you guys but there are some great deals for BF 2142 if money is the only issue.

I check in every blue moon to see if you stubborn bastards have finally given in yet, Fri night fights were always alot of fun around here.

The best thing about 2142 is how equal everything is and how there are no dominating weapons or vehicles. I was a huge fan of POE when it came out but I haven't gone back since I started playing 2142. Yes , it still has its issues which have all been previously mentioned but its quite an improvement from BF2 and I have yet to see one dophin diver.

No version of BF is ever going to be what 1942 was. EA will never allow it, they took the greatest mod ever, BF Desert Combat, and made a franchise out of it. I don't know........to each his own but I've gotten my money's worth out of each version of BF that I've purchased and in the end, its just a video game.

I'm EasyJesus2142 these days and can usually be found on =CCC=, Dead Meat or 9th inf's server if you're online.

    Take it easy guys!

    EJ!

Good to hear from you. A few GRBs do have 2142. It may be up to about half the active members by now. I don't. I'm having too good a time with the Project Reality mod and beta testing EoD 😀

Hey Bubba, not much. Still here in sunny San Diego. Switched companies from an HVAC to a Trim ( doors, mouldings and hardware) but I still deal with alot of the same people. Looking forward to Quake Wars or a BF 1942 on the current engine. I was up in Boston for Christmas and couldn't believe how mild the temps were, I 've been up there for thanksgiving when its been colder. Its actually been down in the mid 30's here the past couple of nights. Anyway, hope things are going well with you and yours. Happy new year!

Hey man nice to meet another GRB... err used to be GRB...errr, well whatever clan you are, in guy.. 😉

I really like 2142 and we do have a few players. Bubba won't buy it because it thinks his one non purchase will teach EA a lesson or something. 😉

In the mean time others here are having lots of fun with it. I find it very well done all in all. There are a few things I really wish EA would fix like letting me save my damn forward key as the right mouse button. Damn game STILL won't save that setting, no excuse for that one... So far any advertising in game has had no impact on game play.

I have been playing on Vertical Finger's servers a lot and you can sometimes find me in their TS server. Catch me on X-fire:1paladin. There servers are called sloppy seconds (titan only) and sloppy thirds playing conquest.

    I won't buy it because:

1.) the game doesn't interest me
2.) I will not ever install spyware on my computer
3.) Yes, I hope EA learns they have alienated their community.

Do not be too hard on Bubba, everyone is different man. I just like to harass him. 🙂
If he simply does not like it, that is cool. I do not agree on the spy-ware though, this has been disproved for the most part unless I read yet another thing to the contrary. 😉

Absolutely, Not to use xfire is kinda lame. You could be on one server, and everyone else on another one.

Just setup xfire with a quicklaunch icon and only run it when your gaming. Otherwise, it can be an annoyance with chat requests.

I finally like xfire sine they fixed the constant timed out problem. That just drove me nuts. 😉

It works rather well now. I just wish it had server searches as well like All seeing eye did, that part was very cool indeed. I just set my xfire to only take chats from friends, works well so I leave it running. well that and no one wants to talk to me anyway ;(
  36. #37
actually, you can do server searches with xfire - it's just not nearly as clear as with ASE. It also has a recently visited servers list which I find more useful than the search.
