BF3 Beta date and system specs

A date for you: September 29. That date is when the much-awaited open beta for Battlefield 3 will commence. It will run until October 10.

Another date for you: September 27. That date is when people who pre-ordered BF3 PC via EA’s trouble-makin’ Origin platform or who made the mistake of coughing up for the Limited Edition of last year’s Medal of Honor remake will get to access the beta.

Oh, and some no doubt divisive news regarding the PC beta specifically: “ORIGIN WILL BE USED TO DISTRIBUTE THE BETA INSTALLATION AND RUN THE GAME AND THEREFORE NECESSARY TO PLAY.” Their capitals, not mine.

A few things I picked up researching this.

Recommended Specs refers to Medium settings. I really think this is going to hurt this game. The average user with those specs is going to try to run everything at full and it's going to run like shit. Even worse, each client's performance and connection to the server will impact each other user to a certain extent.


The Beta is Operation Metro Rush, just like the Alpha. No Jets, Close Quarters combat. I'm not even sure it's worth messing with. A lot of people are pissed off that they chose a map that is not typical Battlefield, not to mention that they seem to be leaning towards Rush over Conquest. A lot of people are saying this is starting to look more and more like BFBC3.

So, if you are not interested in the Beta, my preorder site through Amazon is still an option.

Thanks for the offer on the card, but I think I'll be able to swing a new one this fall.

Definitely will be interesting to see where they take it, but I didn't feel that BFBC2 was all that different from BF2 in terms of overall game play. It didn't have any jets, but as someone who spends his most of his time on the ground in the game, it was one less thing to kill me from above and given how pathetic the anti-air stuff was in BF2, I was just as happy not to have to worry about jets.

Atomm to add to your point, you also need to consider the average person has so much crap running on their computer that if you are near or at minimum specs, you are going to get crappy performance anyways.

Minimum Spec calls DX 10.1 now.....

So first impression... eh.

Not bad playability wise. 2 headshots from a sniper rifle for a kill is getting a little arcadey for my taste. I HATE HATE HATE HATE that zoom is now a click and hold, unlike every FPS ever made. I hoep there is a way to change that. Plays well on my system. Server browser works but sucks.

After about 30 min of play I would give it a solid C maybe C+

I will likely buy it because I think we will get play out of it, if no one here was buying it, I wouldn't spend the money.

I go throught the install and start the game, and it tells me I need to update my drivers to "Experimental 285.27" for the Nvidia Quadro cards, and the highest level driver I can find anywhere is 275.65

Running Alpha they had the 285 available but caused my TF2 to "wink off" or display to go black while playing for about 2 seconds every 30 or 45 seconds, once I rolled back to 275 the blacking went away....... So no Beta for me for the time being - until I find 285


Funny side note - there is a page at Nvidia devoted to BF3 and the new hardware and drivers etc....
There is also a video card checker - which checks your hardware to see if your OK to run BF3 - all it is really is an ad to try to up sell their top line gaming card - and it tells me I do not have a card comparable with BF3 - and recommends a card that has about 150% less "horsepower" than the Quadrs I have .....

I managed to get the beta downloaded last night but haven't had a chance to try it out. I'll take it for a spin this weekend mostly to see how it runs with the 9800 card I have.

Duck I meant to tell you. I get the same error. Need:285.27 I have 280.26 (which is the latest driver from Nvidia). I click ok on that box and the game runs.

cool, maybe the new drivers will keep me from crashing so much.

Played for about an hour last night with frequent crashes. Was fun despite the crashes. Died alot, killed a lot fewer. need to figure out how to reconfigure buttons.

Beta drivers solved my crashing issues it appears. I'm able to run the game with most video settings on low. Getting a bit better at the game already. Played for an hour+ last night and managed to kill a few more and die a bit less.

Yah so I got the drivers working - you know me and my squishy head - I can only stomach the game for about 15 min per hour.

I get as dizzy as Half Life 2 which gives me the same feeling swirls.

Duck try changing the motion blur settings. I think you can reduce it to zero - see if that helps. There maybe some other video settings that may help too.

Duck, if you are having problems, I may be in trouble. I think I'm going to order that new LCD monitor I found that isn't suppose to have input lag before BF3 comes in.

Trying the Beat is free - and MUCH less expensive than a new monitor.

Had a break even round last night. Overall still getting my ass kicked repeatedly, but getting a better handle on the map and the movement. The game would be much better with a squad of people who communicate and stick together. Half the time I get killed, it wouldn't have happened if I had a partner.

On a COMPLETELY different note - CoD Modern Warfare 3 is based on the MW2 engine so if you can play MW2 you will have NO hardware issues with MW3

I gave up with W@W made me sick in the first 15 minutes. I could stand MW1 for about 45 minutes and I was ok at it, but W@W was brutal for me.
