I'm thinking this FnF might be a good night for Vanilla BF2, since our newest member, FknRambo finally got his copy of BF2.

    Ayes? Nays?

As is traditional, most folks start showing up in TeamSpeak (TS) around 9pm Eastern, but if you check Xfire, some may get an early jump on things.

TS info is on our front page. We welcome anyone who wants to join us and kill some hours in game. You don't need to be GRB members! We only ask that you set your Teamspeak to "push to talk". If you need help with this, just ask when you join us in TS.

I'll be there, but might be not be on until after 10:00 EST.
  3. #3
After 10pm at least, IO will keep me there longer.
  4. #4
I plan on being there, but I don't know what time. Wife's job has been keeping her pretty late this week and I've got the kiddo to take care of. Either way, I will be there at some point. Don't give up on me!

I intend to be there but right now my game machine is down.

I got another 7900 video card yesterday so wanted to play with SLI. They are not the exact same model but both are 7900's so should have worked. Anyway the system booted past the BIOS screen and just sat there.

To make a long story short after playing with various options I put it back to the way it was and the system is still hanging in the same place and I have no idea why. It starts to boot then the light gos out and all I see is a blinking cursor.

I intend to play with it tonight and Friday if need be. If I get it working I will be there.

Shakes head.... Oh Paladin, my techno buddy, what have you done?

I can't believe you even said that, much less actually did it. Lexx must be rubbing off on you....

Would you do the same thing with Memory?

What do you mean man? That I actually tried to use SLI in a computer that supports SLI?
I read that SLI works as long as the video cards are the same family so in my case I was using my original 7900GT with a 7900GS. Should not have had any problems because of that.

It also does not explain why it still won't work putting the old card back in alone.

I did nothing wrong there man. Something is wrong but it was nothing that I did wrong that I can tell.

    I am not a computer newbie 😉

Heh, I get overwhelmed when I go over there to visit. He has techo to add to his techo. One computer in his hand, another in his lap, another on his TV set 20' away.. 🙂

Sheesh, you'll gonna have $5-600 worth of video cards in one box. Egads! Still I'm kinda shocked it didn't work right for you the first crack. That really sucks and isn't working as advertised.

Another idea fellows. If there is so much boredom with BF2/mods, I can always host everyone for a Friday UT nite. Have a diff server with gameservers.com that I want to tryout this weekend. I can run anything vanilla except Onslaught since its part of the agreement to limit lagging on that box.
  10. #10
I would be concerned about voltage differences between the two cards. Not to mention the different Clock Speeds. I'm just picky about that kind of stuff and I'm giving you a hard time.

I hope it works out. Having gone through my computer issues a while back, I feel for ya.

Lexx, can you run mods? I would be up for some UT, but I would like to try some new mods. I really want to check out that Star Wars mod.

  11. #11
My impression was SLI required the same chipset on the vid cards. i.e. both 7900GT. I'd be more up to play UT than BF2 vanilla. either way I will be there for at least some time.

    Does FknRambo have UT 2004?

With Sindy and others wanting to play CSS & some wanting to play UT, maybe we can get something going for Saturday too. I'm up for either.

  13. #13
That's right! Rambo just got his BF2 copy back.

Let's play some vanilla this Friday and something else next Friday.... Cool?

  14. #14
Sindy has UT, just hasn't played it for more than 15 mins 😉

Its setup with enough serverpackages already, you dont' really want that crappy mod do ya? Whoever did the graphix for it certainly rushed it out the door. For the time being there are just TWL maps, antiTcc and UTcomp 1.7.

Whatever it is, be it BF, UT, CS, or HL2, I'd still prefer vanilla 🙂 I'm about modded' out.

What's antiTCC and UTcomp in English? Some of us don't live and breath UT. . . 😉

Atomm, when we get the Quake Wars server and the 2nd server with it, will we have the ability to change games easily? QW will probably always be QW, but it would be nice if we can switch around games on the 2nd box.

They both have the same G71 chipset but the GS has 4 pipelines less. After even more reading there are ways to hack around with BIOS flashing etc... but it may not work.

That is fine, as I was just playing with it, but still does not help me get my system back using just the original 7900GT. Weird 😉

Anyone want to buy a brand new 7900GS card? 😉

Lol, looks my my hardware luck rubbed off on you. Thats what you get for being home 😉

Nice card, too bad I don't have that flavor of video slot.

AntiTcc is cheat protection, UTComp is a mutator that adds TAM, Arena Match, brightskins and hitsounds.

    $5!

Doc, I don't know if we can switch on the fly. My gut feeling is no. Also, we may not be going that route since the new Ranked Server info has been released. I don't want to take any chances. We lost a lot of momentum by going unranked when BF2 was released.

What truly baffles me about the ranked vs. unranked deal is that the QW community is for the most part happy to see it. They see it as letting the point whores play on one set of servers while the "real" players will play on the unranked. Does that sound familiar??????? Even if there is no true benefit to playing on a ranked server, people will do it because they can track their progress. The only one's truly upset about it seem to be the people coming from a BF2 background 🙁
  22. #22
I've considered telling our story a few times on the QW forums, but decided it was better to keep it to myself.... Less server competition.... :-)

Man, are the W:ET guys in for a huge culture shock. Going from BF42/BFV to BF2 was a huge shock to the BF community. All of sudden, there was this huge influx of CS gamers, stat whores, cheating bastards and 13 year olds swearing like a sailor.

    It's going to be interesting....

  23. #23
I am good to go here. I was tired yesterday so thought to myself, just look at it tomorrow.

So I came home and found out what it was in about 30 seconds! 😉

When I was playing around yesterday and I first tried to boot it with both cards, it did not boot. I noticed that one of my SATA cables came loose with me in there fooling around with the cards. I discovered it yesterday so it was re-plugged in when I was trying to get it to boot the rest of the time so never gave those another thought.

What I did not see yesterday and just noticed was that one boot with it unplugged made the BIOS re-arrange my SATA drive boot order so it was trying to boot of of a data drive.

    Silly shit 🙂
  24. #24
Well, that's one less thing to worry about. Good to hear, Pal.
  25. #25
Yea, glad to hear it was something easy and cheap.....

So, this means you'll be ready for FNF?

This is not only happening for QW, its the same deal with UT3. I think all the BF idiots we hate are crying out for ranked servers on every platform, so we can really never get away from them. The only diff between UT and QW is I don't give a damn about the rankings anymore.

Glad to hear your good to go. With all the talk about sound cards this week, I decided to put in the repaired powersupply and toss in a soundcard and nix the onboard one. Well.... it was a long day afterwards.

Wouldn't boot. I was so pissed off 🙂 After unplugging/plugging everything else in/out, finally managed to get past the locked screen asking if I wanted to boot the CD. I tossed the XP disk in and did the first repair option. Then when I finally got to windows, I had it so frilled up by moving everything around, it locked up a few more times. After waiting out a thunderstorm which took out our electric for 2 hours, I managed to get a somewhat workable system again. I had a HD in my hand when the power hit, so it of course crashed and I lost 200 gigs of data, which I'm slowly recovering with a HD program.

Anyways, it took several hours to even get windows to see the damn soundcard. I swear it wanted to have sex with the motherboard, in/out, in/out, lol. I also found or caused other problems, like wiping out the USB hubs, and my fav, the promise IDE card disapeared. Which I finally figured out was causeing my 200g drive to only format to 135g. So I rearranged all 6 internal drives according to size and I think I'm good to go.

I should be brighter, wider, and faster tonite 😀

ps, thanks for fixing the powersupply Doc and Pal. Seems to be working like a charm again.

Dunno. Many things were put forth, including non-bf2.

Regardless of what we pick, I hope you didn't miss where I encouraged you to put forth an idea for Saturday gaming. More ppl might join you if you post your intent to play something.

I probably won't be on until late tonight and there is a small possibility of not at all. However, I should be around for some Gaming on both Saturday and Sunday nights.

I was trying a drive in different places to see if I could get a read on it. Once I had it tipped back looking at the master jumper and lightning struck nearby and gave a nasty electrical spike to the house. That drive was making the most horrible sounds after that ;P

Had to reformat it after that as there was no reading the boot sector. However I was able to recover almost every file with EASEUS Data Recovery, but it took all nite.

Still, I have to have a bootable CD in the drive or my system will hang on bootup. Wtf? Leave the drive empty and it just locks up at the boot from CD option. At least I have it almost restored.

Sorry about bailing out so quick last night. I was having a lot fun. I've got a stupid sinus infection and after a few rounds, everything was spinning so bad, I just had to go lay down.

Hope everyone had a good time.... I enjoyed pwning the enemy helo over and over. :-)

Sorry I missed it. I had talked to Pal for a sec and intended to play. But, I got a call from a friend and ended up being on it for a long time. After that the night was shot... LOL Sawwy. 🙁

I've given the matter a lot of thought, Atomm, and I don't believe we're doing you any favors running you out there on the playing field every Friday night. We need to get you healthy. That's why I'm putting you on the 60-day Disabled List, retroactive to May 4th. After that, I'm gonna designate you for a rehab assignment in Monkey Kick-Off, then we'll see if you've recovered enough to join us in time for the Quake Wars release. You've got a long gaming career ahead of you, and we don't want to do anything foolish now to jeopardize that.

We need to call someone up from the minors. . .crap, our system's not very deep. . .maybe Willits or X_Sarah_X can sub for awhile. . .anybody know any likely free-agents we can pick up? The Braves dropped Craig Wilson recently, but the White Sox picked him up. . .I wonder if we should put in a call to Elmo Pimps Emo Philips. . .

Think we can work a trade with the ICE guys for Varg? Howsabout a large 2-topping pizza, a six-pack of domestic beer, and 1 month teamspeak/ventrillo hosting? Think that might do it? 😛
  47. #47
I bet if you made it Canadian beer they'd go for it.
  48. #48
Man, trading for Varg is a tough call. Whose good enough to entice them, yet bad enough that we don't mind loosing them?

I'm leaning towards Lexx. After all his 'puter problems, he's on the DL more than not. 😈

The previous post was a joke, mmmkay!

Well, he's not strong in the BF2 area, though he's picked that up recently. . .but he's a hell of a UT 2004 asset. If they're looking to boost that area, they might bite. . . 😀

Hey I'm up and running 100% now 🙂 My Sata drive was overheating last week. I re slotted it, fanned it, but best of all I deleted BF42/2142 and a crapload of other free/shareware junk, thinking I'd need the room to do a repair.

If it makes ya feel any better, the only two games I have installed now are UT and BF2 even tho I'm only mediocre at both 😛

Hope things work better now. You've got more, and probably better, hardware than me. You should be getting better performance than you have been. Don't worry about us trading you away. We're trying to get an extra body, a one-for-one trade won't do the job 🙂

If you are not going to play 2142 ever again why don't you give it to Doc? He will play it for free I am sure.

I still like 2142. On my system it runs fine and is a lot of fun.

The clan should have got this when it came out. We would be playing it and not have to worry about killing time before QW.

Sorry but this is how I feel. Do not chime in with all the reasons why you didn't. I understand all of that 😉

Hey Doc, can you pull that knife from my back?

  54. #54
    Atomm wrote:
Hey Doc, can you pull that knife from my back?

    What knife?

If we'd gotten into 2142, it certainly would've been something else to play. . .but we've been down that road so often it needs resurfacing. We all have our reasons why we didn't, and they were carefully considered reasons that have been gone over time and again. This is nothing that the next big game won't fix. If there wasn't such a game-drought this past year, this would not have been an issue, but we're gonna see this kind of drought more and more.

AS gfx become nicer and game options become more varied and complex, the development time has grown and releases are fewer and far-between. The question of whether or not we pick up a game in the near future should be based less on how we like the initial game, and more on the development tools and activity in the community.

We're not going to get cool new games every year, but every 3-5 years. If we're lucky, they'll be staggered release times by the various developers, or it's really gonna hurt. What we'll get in-between will be incremental changes like 2142. We're paying the price for more advanced, prettier games. It's gonna get ridiculous when they start programming for multi-cores and go nuts with destructible environments and cool physics tricks.

I'd like to see a flexible game engine about as good looking as BF2 at high settings, but with great development tools, excellent net code and great hitbox detection. Just freeze the cool fx and fancy gfx right there, and give the community the tools to work with it. THAT would keep us busy for several years.
  55. #55
That was exactly what BF42 became, except the tools were custom made by the community and not released by the developer.

We all saw what happens when you let the developer step in and take over, ahem, BF2.....

I agree with Doc though. We do need to make future decisions based on more factors. I mean, if we are not going to play MMORPG's, then we have to find things to pass our time... :-)
