It has some good old BF42 maps, and there's a lot of good looking maps, and at least a few with some great gameplay. I think it's the best LOOKING mod I've played for BF2, and the kits and pickups are really cool. . .for example, the AT kit has rockets, mines, a six shot GRENADE GUN, and a MORTAR, and a pistol, I think. Multi-zoom scopes for sniper class, one of those cool helicopter guns like Jesse Ventura toted around in Predator for the support class. . . and bots to beat up on!

The bots are a little better than the ones in the stock single-player game. You can pick a server that's ppl versus bots, or ppl on both teams with bots filling out the roster, or just ppl (I think). The bot servers are fun just to run around and kill stuff without the bunny-hopping twitch kiddies, and the other crap that sometimes comes up.

There's a lot of new aircraft in the mod, and the POTENTIAL has been there for massive Death From Above, but I haven't run into much of that yet. I guess no rank means those guys play elsewhere.

It's a fun shoot-em-up time, but it's a HUGE DL, especially if you're counting the three map packs(and you should). It's not a game you decide a day in advance to play, or even 2 days, if there are multiple ppl that need to DL it.

Yah, thats a nice mod. I only downloaded the main part so far and played it about an hour with Doc. Sadly, its still slow BF2, but the mod stood up well as far as that bloated game can allow one 🙂

Again, I preferred the mix of bots/humans on both sides. The bots were easy to kill and they added necessary fill to the mix, but having humans to pick on was better. This mod would have been great when we had a server we could never get started.

Again, this is how BF2 should have been shipped. One of these days I'll allocate more time to getting the map packs. Everytime I did want to join the guys in this via xfire, they were of course playing a map I didn't have.

I wonder if BF4 will have redirect. I just don't see EA being able to figure it out in time for BF3 🙁

Get the damn map packs before we use this game up and forget about it, Lexx. It's been MONTHS now. Quit downloading the porn for one night! 🙂

I think most, if not all BF2 maps are over 50 megs. How much can you DL, how big can the files be before it becomes impractical to use redirects?

I don't even know what AI is, so yeah, stand-alone. Get the AIX install, and the three map packs. That will be quite enough DL'ing by itself, I'm sure you'll find 🙂

They do look good, at least SOME of them. I can't say that I've played all of 'em yet, and there are a few 'dusk' maps that don't look all that great to me.

I haven't played it much since getting my computer fixed. I tried to play Friday, but storms rolled through, and it made for an abbreviated gaming night. I jacked up a lot of the eye candy, so things are looking pretty good now. My present computer scores twice what my old computer did in 3D Mark 2003, so I figured I might as well enjoy it!

I just downloaded some new maps as well. I don't know if they're any good, but I figure it's good to have them just in case I get into a server and suddenly they pop up during a map-switch. DEFINITELY get the other map packs (at the link I posted in the message above) first. If you play the mod, you'll see them a lot. Lexx doesn't have them, and he can't play, can you Lexx? 😛

Getting them and actually installing and playing them is another matter. Its still BF2 ;p

The maps are part of a mod, so you don't have to download them. I would focus first on getting your version patched up to the most recent and try playing some "vanilla" bf2 to get the hang of the game. I would start with infantry only and with a friend or two to show you the ropes.

Yah, Sarge has a point. Get patched up, get the Mod listed in this thread, and idle in Xfire with a 'want to play vanilla BF2' afk message. Whats left of BF2 players are either using keyboard hacks or worse. The mod takes you away from the stat padders anyways.

Also play some of the single player missions first. At least get an idea of what you want to do, and how to get there via diff kits. Best to look up Doc for some training help.

I don't see where Infantry Only (IO) would be easier to learn than regular BF2. I don't think the vehicles add much complexity to the game, unless you are trying to fly. You SHOULD find a dead server with 1-2 other ppl in TeamSpeak with you, and run around for a half-hour or so trying things.

I think the AIX mod would be easier in terms of gameplay for a newbie, because of the bots and the lack of incentive for ppl to use hacks (the AIX servers don't give you rank, and allow you to unlock kits) but you might want to get some experience in "vanilla" BF2 before playing mods. Also, AIX is nice because it doesn't have unlocks - everyone has the same guns regardless of experience.
