    From /.

"It's that time of year again and ModDB has released the winners of their annual Mod of the Year contest. Gamers who like to go beyond their initial investment have chosen their favorites for 2006: Point of Existence and Project Reality according to ModDB's Mod of the Year competition. The contest took in over 80,000 votes and narrowed the field from 4,000 mods to the Top 5 released and unreleased mods, as well as a handful of genre awards and the Editor's Choice awards. Perhaps it is ironic that the two top mods of 2006 are both for the Battlefield 2 platform, which has been abandoned by its developer and is notoriously buggy and difficult to mod. Despite these problems, both mods went on to beat out mods from the ever popular Half-Life 2 platform. The much better maintained Source engine is represented with the winners of the third through fifth places: Goldeneye: Source, The Hidden: Source and Minerva."

That absolutely shocks me to no end..... I am amazed that 2 BF2 mods can top the list. Kudos to them!

I think some of it is due to a rabid fanbase (Forgotten Hope in particular). I think it also points out how much the BF2 community does support its mod.

I'm not sure that BF2 has been abandoned. There was some discussion last week about a new patch....

This does not shock me as the BF2 community is rather large. EA crap aside, it is the best multi player series out there right now and has not slowed down at all. 2142 is going to have a new expansion pack in two months already. Gamers love this type of game play.

I was just looking to see if they have a new patch up on the main page but what I found was a new style of gameplay.. a P2P, low priced though. Anyoen try it out yet.. BF2 Combat. looks like they play a lot of custom maps but they also play it in a stable environment..

Stable meaning the battles won and lost give units control over certain areas of the map.. looks interesting, but I doubt I can justify the cost at this particular junction when I am playing my good PS1 games again.

Sgt. Pepper from iCe plays in something like that but I don't think it costs anything. I'll try to remember what the name of the tournament was.....

Silent, can you post a link to the page you found that on?

I'm not sure that it is a new style of play, but rather a fan created tournament based on a Risk Board Game Structure.

    As Requested.

BF2 Combat now lets you fight with elite Special Forces units in a great atmosphere, rich with camaraderie. Hone your sniper skills, or try the Army Ranger School. Check out custom maps, and join the thousands already playing. Enlist individually or with your whole clan through the innovative Clan Fusion™ program.

The block was found about halfway down the page under the Armored Forces Adverts.. right underneath the 2142 adverts.

Yea, that's not actually an EA thing. It's sort of like they expand on what the game actually is. It has a roleplay element to it as you follow strict rank structure.

1EU is a training Battalion from this exact site. Pepper wore that 1EU tag, so I assume it's the same thing.

There a several more just like this from BF42 and BFV. Their was one for Forgotten Hope that recreated the various battles across Europe. It always looked cool, but it was mostly German based players.
