Initial Thoughts on BFBC2

I am trying to modify the FOV settings. In doing so, I need to edit the settings.ini file which doesn't appear on my system. I read that playing the game will create the file. It didn't work. So, I jumped in just to play one map and played three.

This is the first BF game that I feel like a n00b. It has tons of kit options, that aren't unlocked until you've played a while. The old system of spawn points and map points are replaced by what feels more like a space game, than a BF game. Glowing Circles and Triangles just don't feel right to me.

In the first two maps, I was owned. I tried playing a medic and failed terribly. I switched to Recon and decided to stay outside the main battles and assist from afar. My sniping skills in this game leave a lot to be desired. So, by the third map, I had switched to good old assault. I went from a K/D ratio of .25 in the first two maps to a K/D of 2.5 in the third.

I started playing smarter, skirting the edges of the towns and coming in from behind. I stood back and watched what was occurring on the minimap. I also found that I can play this game by sound, which is something I feel gives me a slight edge and I love doing anyway. By doing this, I actually started killing people. woohoo!

Here are a few things I learned.

There is not prone, only crouch. This sucks for Recon, but does a lot to make straight up fights more about shooting and less about who can hit the ground first. Crouch is done through the left CTRL key. Under settings, you can change it from hold down to toggle if you like. I prefer toggle so I don't have to stretch out to the CTRL key. Sprinting uses the good ole shift key. I did not see a toggle for it.

Oh yea, I played conquest. I figured it was easier to stick with what I know. I also filtered out Hardcore servers as I've read it's not as fun.

So, the million dollar question. Did it bother me. Unfortunately, yes it did. But, it wasn't as bad as CoD and I may be able to play through it or at the least, take a break every so often.

Did I like it? Yea, I actually enjoyed the third map once I started getting the feel for the game. That third map felt a lot like BF2 Special Forces and I actually enjoyed that expansion as much or more than BF2. And the jeep like buggy's are freaking fast and loose. It was almost more fun driving them than playing the game itself. Also, the destructible environments are absolutely awesome. I was in a tank as a gunner and he literally ran over the trees and pushed them down. It was really cool.

What I am really looking forward to, is playing with you guys on a squad using Vent. With the ability to spawn on any squad member, it will be fun to play with the squad stuff. Also, with our friends at CGC, it might be fun to beat up a few persons who will remain nameless. 😈

I always run the single player first - I guess to get story background - see the scenery, get use tot eh weapons etc... Fraking awesome! Really some times I just stand there and look all around in single player.

I'm enjoying the sniper rifle and the SCARL - wish the reload was faster - you know damn well if YOU were in a fire fight you'd be speedy Gonzales with a mag change, but in game there on a casual Sunday stroll /// no biggie though - I've not died on a change.... just slow.

I like it - a lot! and yah will be fin to frag all together again, I see Sarge or Bubba log on to Steam - how do we meet up? I've never used Steam for friends so am n00b - school me.

I've only messed around with the single player game so far and while it has nearly the same feel as single player COD, it is getting me used to the weapons, movement and such. I've played probably two hours on and off this morning and have a pretty good headache going but I think that is from getting about 3 hours sleep last night due to a sick child.

Looking forward to trying multiplayer tonight (likely) but not looking forward to the multiplayers themselves if you know what I mean, except you guys of course 😀

I think you can join a friend in game by right clicking on them in your friends list in steam, but I haven't used it all that much so I can't say for sure.

I think Sarge is right. Right click if I remember correctly. We'll need to add each other as Friends inside of BFBC2 as well. Since I didn't buy my game through Steam, you won't see me playing. I'll try adding it to Steam as a shortcut launcher to see what happens.

On that third map, I had a blast knowing that I'm a slick sleeve that just killed someone with an Officer ranking. I'd love to know what they thought when they saw the kill cam and my rank was Nil. HEHEHEHE

We'll need to get Drix involved. He has this and enjoys it. I'll try to reach out to him and see what he's up too.

Did anyone notice any stuttering while playing the game. There were a few times where it seemed like the game was accessing my hard drive and things would stop/start a few times, then continue on. That was really annoying. I might need a new video card. What are you guys running? I have a Nvidia GT 8800.

Also, I wonder if we could suck some of the old guys in for some Vietnam action.

Will let Joe know also that we have it now - he does also - and of the three now FPS releases his is his favorite.

I sent messages to Drix, Raze, ephil and Goose. Also, the OKGG Lan guys had a thread about Vietnam. I told them to drop by. If someone has the Vent info handy, let me know and I'll get it over to them.

Might even update the front page of GR! woohoo!

PM'd vent info - it's all on Bubbas CC so kept it private unless he wants it public.

    Got it. Thank You!

Public is fine. If we need a larger one I may host it on a server here. I have the server and I have vent installed, and now adays my pipe is huge 60Mb/s

Completed the single player - I would have to place it as the Number One single player I have played.

I loved the cut scenes - they got the military banter right - but occasionally the voice volume in cut scenes was piss - I had to lip read almost but the audio was not there.... others loud as Big Ben. None the less - it's a definite DO-OVER most likely more than one more do-over.

Also note that there are "hidden" weapons in the single player mode and when you find them they are added to the list of available weapons in the weapon cache locations from that point on. Also allows you to try them out for multiplayer mode - I have not picked a class to settle in but have several unlocks in the Engineer class but still may pick the Medic (always liked that class) my conundrum is I really liked the F2000 in SP and it's only for the Assault class..... meh will learn as we go.

Lists/video locations of collectible weapons in SP mode.

The points you acquire in Vietnam apply to the same class in standard BC2 - I ran Medic all nigh with Sarge and Bubba and unlocked 2 more weapons, all the Gadgets and all the Specializations for the Medic class in Standard - I can se that almost as a cheat - join Vietnam a assault to unlock the goodies in Std....

None the less. Vietnam is the goods.

    Know what sucks?
Read the information on the Carl Gustav "Anti-Tank" weapon the first AT upgrade for the Engineers.

"Ideal for "Bunker Busting" and Anti-Personnel applications. The Carl Gustav is less suitable against armor where other more modern weapon systems excel."

IE: Here have a HE Rocket propelled sniper rifle. Rat Bastards.

Don't k now where else to post this.... tried Squad Death Match on a few servers today - FAIL - unless your in love with the Sniper.... blah.

Basically the server is full of 4 man squads - first squad to reach 64 kills - wins.
So snipers, motion sensors and random placed arty to make people move.... One server placed ONE APC in the map.... so it was rush to APC and hope to hell your side had it.

Also noticed that revives from Medic did not negate the kill...

Don't see this mode getting a lot of play for me.

I can stop playing anytime now.
(in all fairness - Sarge wiped me the first 7 kills - my ping was 200+ and his ~50 or 60 - I had to stay far away as the ping difference sucked ass.)

    But none the less....

Interesting thing was the server has 2 NPC on each side and Sarge and I were the only human players - typically servers will not give points and awards or even start scoring unless you have 6 or 8 humans.....

Sarge was able to get some unlocks and medals on a ranked server 1 vs 1 - what ever - I think it will be in our recent server log, so maybe we can use it again for a 2 : 2 / 3 : 3

    Nite all.

As you may or may not know on the change to Win 7 Pro I could not play multiplayer BFBC:2
I have sent tickets to EA (Rat Bastards) and STEAM and they bot are saying its the other guys issue, and as it was a gift I can not give them proof of purchase.... so they are not HOT to work out the issue.

Well I just logged on to my STEAM account to try to work on it again.....
Double click BFBC:2 and it comes up - IN USE....

    Bastard.

    Rat bastards.
  18. #18
Duck, if there is anything I can do to help, let me know. I have emails for the purchase and you should have the gift email.

Did you do an in place upgrade of 7? The only thing I can think of is to remove and reinstall.

  19. #19
Atomm the last time I tried to log on to the game and use it to work on the issue it was IN USE as in someone was online with my CD key playing it.

And again STEAM and EA both say its the other guys problem.
