No More Battlefield 2 Patches Planned

dAccording to ex-DICE employees, there are no more patches planned for the bug-filled multiplayer shooter Battlefield 2. The former DICE members, who now formed their own studio, said via a forum release that patch 1.4 (released last November)was the last BF2 patch, and that all forces at DICE are focused on Battlefield 2142, which is, unfortunately, just as bug filled as its predecessor.

EA and DICE hasn’t mentioned anything about a patch ever since the last one, over six months ago. And they will probably never reveal that no further patches are planned, since that’ll take away the last hope BF2 players have. Since there most likely won’t be an announcement, this will technically remain a rumor forever, just as BF2 will technically remain a bug filled game.

    Today DICE/EA responded:

    EA/DICE Respond To DigitalBattle’s “Rumor”

You may have noticed when we broke the news about Battlefield 2 and the end of support for the game, as several fan sites have. The news sent tiny shockwaves through the community, tiny enough that EA and DICE for the first time responded to a “rumor”.

I can with good conscious say that we are still supporting Battlefield 2 and no other decision has been made. Dice Live has been reached by rumors saying otherwise, although under normal circumstances we do not comment on rumors this has caused unnecessary concern for our Battlefield players.

According to EA/DICE, they are supporting BF2, “but no other decisions have been made”. Decisions about supporting the game with new updates, perhaps? There’s no denial that a confirmation of this “rumor” would instantly result in a great portion of players quitting for good. The big issue for EA isn’t the community (somehow I feel it never was), but the ranked server providers, who pay EA for a ranked server certificate, pay quite a lot as well. If the players leave, they certainly would too.

Other than that, it’s obvious that the community never trusted the developer, just read the replies at TotalBF2 (or any other BF2 forum for that matter). Until they release a new patch, or at least announce something, there’s no hope in BF2, there hasn’t been for a long time.

    Who do you believe?????

My guess is that we will never see another BF2 patch despite DICE saying that they are continuing to support it. They are likely busy with more content for 2142 or BF3, whatever that means.

They're gonna bullshit until no one believes 'em, or until the next game distracts from the issue.

They aren't going to patch anything else. I've resigned myself to that, and BF2, as is, is the BF2 history will remember. . .a game that got a whole lot right, but maddeningly, fell far short of what it could've been.

We need Valve, or better yet, the Unreal people(Epic) to come up with their own BF2-type game. It will be interesting to see how ID handles Quake Wars.

Fix the hit boxes, fix the jumping, fix the rockets thru vehicles, fix the DAMN GAME BROWSER, fix the favorite servers list. . . that's of the top of my head.

I think DICE has it in them to make the game that we are looking for. I'm hoping that they learned some things from BF2 and 2142 that they can incorporate into the next game. From what I read from people playing 2142 there are some aspects of it that are much better than BF2 while there are some things that are maddeningly the same or worse. They need to get EA to just let them make the game without the pressure to get it out. That's part of the reason that Valve and the Unreal folks do so well as they release it "when it's done" not when the accounting folks say it needs to come out. Even the Kaos guys have pushed the game back to avoid the saturated holiday season when it could have been pushed up instead. I like to think that they'll use that time to polish the game.

Hit boxes and the whole "random deviation" thing are the two biggest things on my list. Fix those two things and the rocket issue goes away and maybe the hopping as well. Add in the squad/teamwork stuff from 2142 and set it sometime between 1940 and say 2010 and it could be really good.

Sarge, this is the same guys who fixed things in BF42 that were broken in BFV to this day. This is the same group that fixed the server browser in BF42 after 2 years of patches, yet every game after became worse and worse. The problem is even though they may fix something, the next version of the engine is based off of code from a specific time in the development of the previous game and for whatever reason, they suck so badly at code control, they can't ever figure out how to put it back into the code tree....

I'd love to see a new BF game in the WWII timeframe, but the truth of the matter is it will never, ever be like it was in BF42..... Which will never ever be like it was for me personally in Quake Team Fortress.....

No, what we need is a whole new experience to jump up and give us something exciting.... That is why I am putting a lot on the Chaos guys.... Indifference breeds innovation eventually, just not where you expect it....

This is exactly what really soured me against EA and 2142. The control key/mouse bugs I had with BF2Demo/1.0 just reappeared with 2142demo/and every damn patch afterwards. Its clear the same people were not involved in all the patches.

I'm not looking forward to BF3 because of everything said in this thread. I doubt EA will ever put out a decent quickloading, decent frontend with favs, buddies, and redirection. From this point on they are always going to go the ranked server route to make extra money like a mmorpg. 2142 already started down that rpg road and it was even more not to like about it.

I just bet ya BF3 will be 2142/Wow combined. It won't matter what era or style they set it too, it will just be another morpgh to suck monthly dues from its users, ontop of thier ranked server costs. Instead of selling you 3-4 extra maps, they will just come up with a new mission every month or two.

I also predict they will 'support BF2' only and as long as they can make a buck off of thier ranking service. Once that drops to a certain percentage of what it is now, they will drop it and push BF3/2142'ish.

The question isn't whether or not they are going to continue to support BF2...

It whether or not we care?

Goodness knows I no longer do.

I have to say one thing about the Ranked server stuff. I have seen the original agreement on Ranked servers. It specifically stated that you would have to run free Public server for every 10 servers you sold. However, it never stated there was any sort of payment back to EA for the servers.

I'd like to find that because it smacks of racketeering.....

I don't know about 2142, but with BF2 the guys in Sweden did the game and then they let the Canadian folks handle the patches so there were two different groups.

BF2 is(was) a very good game that just suffers from some very frustrating weaknesses and faults. Each iteration of the game has seen an improvement in the team play aspect which has been great. Remember how hard it was to try to work together with someone in BF42???? BFV improved on that at least allowing you to define your friends, and BF2 improved on that further with the squads. The faults that the BF series has are certainly big ones - the hitbox issue that has plagued the game from the 42 days is a good example of that, but a game that I have something like 700 hours of play time in can't be all that bad. I hold out hope for the next game and that DICE can take their time and do it right. Maybe they learned something from 2142 which still has fewer people playing it than BF2. I'm sure that EA will find some way to screw it up, but I do hold out hope.

    1) Hitboxes
    2) Get rid of the "deviation" crap and allow skill to play a role!
    3) Provide true cover and concealment.
    4) Balance, balance, balance - like rock - paper - scissors

Ok, I can agree with that.....

random deviation can suck my butt!
