Shitty gaming weekend

Well, I had a shitty gaming weekend, much of it thanks to 2142. SUCH an uneven gaming experience. You can have a run of good games with ppl working together, and then you can't buy teamwork for love or money. When you throw in 2142's craptacular performance (go to load into a game, and fully HALF the time you're booted out before you load) it makes for a shitty gaming experience, especially if you're server-hopping looking for some teamwork (can't find a good game, and you can't get the goddamn game to load!)

You spot a single enemy foot soldier at your silo, and your teammates jump in an APC and drive off to leave you alone to deal with him (and then you get kicked for using the word "tard" 🙂 ). . .squads wander around with seemingly NO goal in mind. . .they park the vehicle (and the spawn point) a few MINUTES away from the target. . .and, of course, unfailingly, you end up on the team that doesn't know from teamwork, and you're left dead looking at the enemy run away, thinking, "Boy I wish I could squad up with the enemy." But you can't, because EVERYONE wants that - that's why your under-performing team is also left 1 or 2 ppl down all the time.

You get left behind, run out of ammo, and finally suicide to spawn on your squad leader, only to see him suicide 30 seconds later (apparently) because he's in the middle of nowhere - and now YOU'RE in the middle of nowhere, alone. You run around, lay traps, set up situations where you might succeed knowing that no one has your back - you work, you bust your ass, and you get six points towards your next upgrade (there are 40 unlocks, BTW. I still don't have grenades).

In other words, it's a lot like BF2. I recommend every one buy it immediately.

I'm seriously rethinking this whole "PC gaming as fun" idea. Anyone want to form a band instead? Play D&D? Reading circle? Quilting?

Hehehe.... I really think it has something to do with the design of the newest BF engine. The whole teamwork thing got worse overall, not better. Yes, there are some shining moments, but the carrot on a stick really pushes people to be individuals, not team players.

I played Quake Wars the other day and it was a blast. There wasn't the type of isolated squad teamwork that you might get once in a while in BF2, but it was more of a sea of teamwork, where everyone in the team was working towards a single goal.

That is one huge plus I will give Quake Wars, you have NO CHOICE but to work together to protect/build/etc... If you don't, the game is just over that much faster...

Watching everyone swarming around to do the missions is great to see and a blast to be a part of.

I always thought 2142 encouraged good teamwork better. The field upgrades and extra points you get accomplishing things within the SL radius. Also if you get the netbat system you have private UAV's for personal or vehicles.

Anyway as you said, in any game, being on a good team and in a good squad is key. If you are not, the game sucks big time. I have played great game sin BF2 and 2142 with good squads that were a blast. Then we have FnF's 😉

I personally just leave the server if the team is shitty. I find another one and am usually happy.

As for the performance, I got nothing. It ran just fine on my single video card I used. I think it just has a huge polygon count that requires more HP.

I am going to have to agree with Paladin on this one. The performance is the same to me on both BF2&2142. I can either get a good squad/team that is talking and working together with umpteen unlocks or if not I set up my own little squad and start trooping around being a good guy.. though as of late mainly just been plainly with you all.

This stuff happened over the length of the evening, on at least 5 different servers. Couldn't find one I liked 🙁

That does suck when you just cannot seem to find a decent server. The weird thing is some games can vary a LOT with just a change of a map. Unsure if it is the map itself or a lot of people leaving with others coming in to take there place and maybe they have a clue. Did you try to change teams or squads?

These games really require a good clan to have fun. Someday when we get enough players, maybe we can all have games to play at various times of the day.

I server-hopped, squad-hopped, and when possible, team-hopped (EVERYONE wants to be on the good team)

    Just wasn't meant to be.

Nice. If you want to get the geeks salivating, you need to share details.

Tower or laptop? RAM? CPU? GFX card? Storage? Motherboard?

Congrats on the new system, now give with the info!

    Standby:

MB: GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3R LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6320 Conroe 1.86GHz - in future will overclock to ~3.0Ghz
    VGA: XFX PVT80GGHD4 GeForce 8800GTS 320MB 320-bit GDDR3 XXX
    HDD: 2x Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD2500KS 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s
    RAM: G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)

    All viewed on my old:
Acer AL2216Wbd Black 22" 5ms DVI Widescreen LCD Monitor with one.. yes one little old IDE DVD drive. Not quite to full SATA but almost. Currently watching the install for Windows...

Would have run a SATA0 array with the two drives but I didn't have a nice little floppy drive loaded with the SATA drivers.

You now have permission to Geekout... and RTFG on em.

SWEET overclocking ability on that Conroe. I'm out of it when it comes to what processors can do what - I can never keep up with the tech changes. I pretty much learn what's current when I'm building my system, and fall more and more out of touch until I need to upgrade again.

I hadn't heard of G. Skill before. New RAM companies sprout up and come to prominence between every one of my new builds. Maybe I should build more often 🙂

looks like a nice setup, the conroe 1.86 is a nice chip, I am glad I got mine. Let me know how stable the overclocking is. I have had goodluck with the gskill ram. I looked at your motherboard it looked good I forget why I went with the one I got over yours. I have several of the same HDD and they are fine equip too. And I wish I had the budget to get a similar vid card, but I fell short there and plan to upgrade at some point.

    Nice!

However, until you get your darn Internet fixed, its the equivalent of driving a corvette everywhere you go at 10MPH.....

Come on man, let them ponies run free!!!!!!

...sadly enough it may just be so. However I will now be looking through a clear glass instead of a crap ass cracked glass screen. I am used to lag-city, from wireless or just bad routing.. it will even be nice to see Neverwinter Nights in all its glory and a few others...

    NWN 1 or 2?

Man, I need to load them up. Bought the games and I have roughly 8 hours between the two....

NWN 1 I believe...... I have both of the baldurs but lost interest after I found the console codes... I need to not do that.

..it is NWN1 but I seem to be having a black screen problem with it.. it does not like NVIDA apparently. Or rather nVidia does not like to keep its drivers working for older games.

    edit:
found a work around.. that not only allows for menu selection with nVidia but also lets me play without the play disk... -blink-

Just select Toolkit from the startup screen > load a mod > f9 to test > esc/quit to menu > and you are done.
