DDO Impressions

What are your impressions so far?

On the first night, I was not terribly impressed. It was still too new to really get what was going on. And my graphics are not that great. Reinstalling HD version now.

But last night was really, really fun. At first, it was me and Sarge and I was running him through the first quests again. We managed to make it to some new quests and they were really, really cool. The mayor's quest comes to mind and the one we did after that. By that time, Silent had joined up and the three of us were knocking out stuff.

Once I got into it, I started watching the dice spins and it really felt like D&D to me. The characters and most of the ability's seem familiar and I like that. I stopped playing at the 2.0 rules, so the 3.5 feets and abilities are new to me, but they fit right in with other MMO's.

One thing I really, really like is it hasn't felt like a grind, even when it was. Partly because of playing with people I know, instead of soloing all the time and partly due to the way the game is designed. I also really, really like the 3 dimesional dungeons. It's not fan out through the tunnels when playing instances. It's really what level am I on, what do I need to do next and where do I need to go? Up and Down play a big part of the instance makeup. That never happened in Warcraft. It was always forward, forward, forward.

One other thing, I really feel like I'm in a good dungeon crawler and the dungeons are very impressive, even for the newer stuff. I can't wait to see the upper levels.

The traps are really, really impressive. Nothing like that ever happened in Warcraft. I'm definitely rolling a rogue for an alt.

If you have EAX, go into your options and turn it on. I've always played by sound and the sounds with EAX are very impressive. I think it was part of the reason night two seemed so imerssive.

Overall, for a free game, I give this a big thumbs up.

BTW, if you didn't install HD and decide to do so, select repair installation during the install and it will overwrite with the HD content without reloading.

    ess gut.

    ja wohl

    ist sehr gut

So Kenny and some of his friends have downloaded it, Kenny has played it up to where we all stopped the first night.

I enjoy the little things this game has to offer, especially when compared to other current MMOs. You mentioned the multi-level dungeons. Nice. Past the first starter area I expect to see a bunch more areas where we need to coordinate a bunch and figure out the rules/paths. Having to find where everything is is a nice change. Especially when its not a 5 hour trek to get somewhere, I am looking at you FFXI. The levels are great stuff, definitely needs some reading up to see whats effective and what fits your style, but overall its not a level fest. I mean they just introduced the level 20, before this it was 15 and 16... talk about a bunch of content per level, looking at you lvl 85 WoW, and levels actually meaning something. Nice.

Overall its first look is good, lets see how it weathers.

OK, HD is much, much better looking. It's the same, but everything is brighter and has a nice pop to it. Between that and the EAX, I feel like I'm in a different game than the first night.

I'm enjoying it so far. The quests are fun and mostly pretty quick (so far). I am especially enjoying roaming around the island beating up on hapless cultists, rats, and the frog/fish looking guys.

I enjoyed it. I'll try to get in-game again soon so that I'm not left too far behind.
