One of my favorite studios is Bioware. Their story is legendary and the mark they made on the Computer RPG market ranks right up there with the Classic SSI Gold Box AD&D games from the 90's and the Ultima Series of the 80's and 90's.
Yesterday, the joyful ride came to an end as they were purchased by EA for 620 million. On one hand, I think the guys who founded Bioware deserve every penny they made from this sale. On the other, I know exactly what happens to game studios purchased by EA.
There were a lot of things said between the two companies about the acquisition. One in particular tells me the writing is on the wall.
said John Riccitiello, EA's Chief Executive Officer. "We also expect this will drive long-term value for our shareholders."
See, this is the problem with any EA acquisition. It's a bottom line decision. It has nothing to do with the gamers who play the games, the community that supports those games or even the great tradition of the games themeselves. Nope, it's all about bringing long term value for the shareholders.
