ATI 4.9 Betas - Good for BFV?

Any of you guys running the ATI 4.9 Betas for better Doom play see any BFV improvements as well? Just curious and haven't been able to find anything about it anywhere yet.

Hmmm... I have not even launched BFV since I installed the beta drivers... Guess I should do that soon 🙂

Will check when I get home on my other machine. I did install them on my game machine; however, they went away with my new card 🙂

My old roomate installed the new betas on a Radeon 9800pro... It went nuts on him and made everything super bright, couldn't see anything. Had to boot in safe mode and uninstall em.

Note: Some people have had issues with the beta drivers... It is VERY important to understand that they are BETA drivers and are not supported... Use at your own risk!

If you find these don't work, what drivers would you recommend? My laptop has a 9700 Pro. As much as I dread going down the ATI driver highway, I don't have much choice. I remember reading the 4.8's were tweaked for FarCry. Maybe I will check them out and see how they did with BFV when it comes in this week.

It's due to arrive on Wednesday. I head to QuakeCon Late Thursday Night or Friday Morning. I don't have much time to get everything in order. Gotta get it right. :-)

The 4.8 drivers aren't out for the ATI cards yet - although my understanding is that they are due out any time. The 4.7's actually reduced performance over the 4.6 drivers in some cases - especially in older cards, but had big improvements for the newest cards. I currently use the Omega 4.7 drivers and haven't had a problem. I installed these a few days after updating to the 1.1 patch for BFV to see if it helped with the lagginess that I am seeing. It didn't, but it didn't seem to get any worse. I was just curious about the 4.9's although I am not one to venture forth with beta drivers if it can be avoided.

atomm I have 3 different catalyst drivers, the one for CoD, as well as the doom update for the Radeon Family.... So, if all else fails while you are at the Con I have a couple you can try.

Cool. I'm a bit confused by all these drivers. Omega? Is that a third party? and ATI releases drivers as odd numbers for beta and even number for the actual release?

Also, which drivers work best for BFV? I gotta be able to play that.

I run the latest "released set" which i guess is the 4.8 and they run fine on my 9600 with bfv.

According to the ATI site, the 4.7 drivers are the latest release. The Omega drivers are a third party that while not supported by ATI, are acknowledged as being a good alternative to their drivers. The Omega's allow for quite a bit more tweaking than the ati ones. For instance, the Omega drivers include the RadLinker utility that allows you to assign specific clock speeds and video settings to your card for individual *.exe's. When I play BFV, it automatically OC's my card a little bit and changes some other settings for me.

Anyone have suggestions for what I should do when the system comes in? Should I go straight to a particular driver set or should I leave it at default? Should I load my games before updating the drivers? Until now, I haven't really paid much attention to drivers unless a problem exists, but it appears with ATI, it is a good idea to keep up with what they are doing.

Well, with ATI... I would stick with the "If it aint broke, don't fix it" look... Even they say that... I would load games, then see how you are...

For me with a new install, I install the 4.7 drivers first as they are stable and will run everything fairly well... Go ahead and download the other drivers and u can tweak them at the Con if u want. Then load up directX9, windows updates, etc then the games.

I would definately stick with the stock ATI drivers for now and only use the Omega's if you are having problems or want to do some tweaking.

I have learned a dirty little secret. Standard Catalyst Drivers will not work with the ATI Mobility video cards in laptops. Funny, the add listed my card as an ATI 9700 Pro, when in fact it is a ATI Mobility 9700, based on the desktop 9600. Funny the things you learn after buying a laptop. 🙁

The good news is the Omega drivers will work with the Mobility line. So, I guess that leaves me no choice but to get them. I wanted to let everyone else know just in case you were interested in a laptop for gaming.

I really like the Omega's - I think mostly because I need to tweak my system so much just to play BFV. I found a website yesterday that helped me understand what all the various options are that you can mess with - both in the default drivers and the Omega's. It is nearly a year old now, but is the first place that I have found that tells me what the z-buffer does and what TCL Back Face Culling is....
