That was my reasoning Doc. I'd read a couple of months ago the steam version is clean. I'm currently downloading it. gonna take 8hrs with my connection ;p

I figured why not. Stockpile some winter gaming.

It's tough to get a straight answer to this. Here's one recent link I found:

They go back and forth, but finally decide (I think) that it still DOES have Securom, but that you can reinstall as many times as you like. I think I'll pass on it.

I've just heard too much about this protection, all of it bad. I'd really like to buy the game. It sounds like something I'd love to play. . .but I'd hate to buy problems for my machine. It's REALLY difficult to get a straight answer to what it does - is it a rootkit, isn't it a rootkit? They don't want you to know what it does, so they don't aren't really convincing when they say it's safe.

At least they've done away with the install limit. I've heard Securom described as less damaging than Starforce. One person said, "At worst secuROM can cause your secuROM-protected game to crash. It does not do any other damage or cause any other intrustion." I was mainly worried about making my system unstable. This person seems to be knowledgeable - he's the guy who wrote the Bioshock tweak guide.

OK, since I can't find anyone credible ranting against secuROM, and since I would love to play the game, I think I'll pick it up as well. 😀

Right Doc. I figure, play it and uninstall it, and take the steps to get rid of the Securom later. Besides, I'm planing on building a pentium system soon, so I'll know to install it again or not.

Now I just have to bother with AIX since it looks like a server just became friendly ;p

I spent all day d/loading Bioshock, installed it, it seems to look and run fine. Now I have to d/load aix 2.0 and those danged maps.

They even promoted Bioshock on german TV. (edit Bullshit I mixed it up with Fall out I guess)

securerom is a rootkit. That means it runs at a level above the user on your machine. It is invasive and does conflict with other softwares. It should be considered a virus 100% of the time, it gains you nothing and is a detriment to you machine and system stability. Also if for some reason someone could hack into it, it would be a security nightmare that would 100% control your computer and that you would have little to no recourse over.

I for one WILL NOT buy anything that has secureROM.

Hi, I am back on the forums. At least partially. 🙂

I agree with Bubba on this one. Anything that runs on your system at a privileged root level is bad news. Bubba is 100% correct that anything 3rd party should be considered a virus.

That is a great price for a game but it is not worth it in my professional IT opinion.

BTW I hope you guys all install AIX 2.0 and join us for some games. it is really fun. It is a great mod and the bots are not bad at all. It always gives us a full 40 players no matter how many we have.

Thanks to Bubba and Paladin for the secuROM info. I did a lot of Googling, and came up with little in the way of reliable info. All I got was a bunch of ppl screaming about it with no info or cites to back them up, and some others that seemed more reasonable and had some geek cred, (but also had no cites) that it wasn't a big deal. Wikipedia wasn't helpful. . .

I'm not convinced it was included with the Steam version. After buying FC2 by mistake secuRom sent inet requests to my firewall. First time I denied those, but the game wouldn't activate.

Installing Bioshock last night didn't bring up any special requests and I don't see anything in my registry after uninstalling FC2.

I don't think Steam wants to be saddled with a securom scare either. Just for the hell of it, I'll re-visit the steps to remove securom again and see if it affects Bio any.

Yes it is a BF2 mod. It is a coop game type meant to play single player but most people play it with friends. You play with added bots that fill out the rest of the 40 players. So it is you/friends and bots against a team of bots usually. You could also play human and bots against other humans and bots if you wanted to.

We just set up an AIX server so we can play and control the maps etc...

It is also a nice mod, new kits and really cool new maps. Get it!!!
Don't forget to get both map packs!

If you get it from another link, you may not end up with the installer version of the mappack. The ZIP version is much more commonly available, but I wanted the installer version, so I went looking for it.

Yeah, it's a lot of DL'ing, but you have broadband and can let it DL overnight, and while you are at work!

Wish I kept the link - rooting around for an hour or so reading on Securom, and found this on a STEAM forum, from a Steam member.

One dirty trick I've used in the past is I change the home page on public hotel computers when ever I travel. I actually made $20 when I moved from VA to TX from doing that. :-)

Hmmm, well, for f*^% sake. I bought FarCry2 on impulse on sale. Turned out to have securom. Installed and played it for about an hour. Didn't like it near as much as Crysis. To read soon after it had securom made me un-install it.

Wth, since I've bought both, I'll get around to enjoying both of them eventually, then I'll either wipe it off or not install them on the next new system I build. From the standpoint of Bioshock the game, the experience, I've gathered its a fantastic single player game to play.

Like, hell, isn't the way TiVo sends back everything you watch, pause, rewind, and replay more or less an invasion of privacy and a virus too?
