Gasp, it's a Modern shooter with the good guys taking on the terrorists. Talk about beating a dead horse to death....

Well, how many options are there really? There's WWI, WWII, Modern warfare, and future warfare. Viet Nam is kind of a 'tweener, but I suppose we should call that a category as well. They've all been done to death, with the exception of the WWI-era, which, not coincidently, is the least interesting. Trench warfare is not cool or exciting.

American Civil war era, Revolutionary war era, Napoleonic era infantry warfare are just not gonna work, though I'd tip my hat to someone who could make me a liar. I've seen mods based on pre-WWI weapons. They've sucked: at most, they're a fun diversion for an evening or 2.

I think games need to change eras as they advance their engine, especially if the new engine is not leaps and bounds over what has gone before. After a few engine iterations, they'll bounce back to their original era, and do it all again. BF2 is great, but a lot of what makes it great is the modern take on combat. EA made 2142 with what is essentially the same engine. I figure the next game in the BF series will go back to WWII, and the game will look FANTASTIC next to the old BF1942 - better than BF2 gfx + using what they learned making BF2 & 2142 (and stole from competing games) to tweak gameplay. Gotta give the gamers something new for their money. BF2, 2142, Quake Wars, Frontlines, the new Unreal. . .it will be time for a totally redone WWII shooter.

I would guess the main factors in the equation would be the amount of time/money needed to create new engines, the willingness of the public to keep buying the same game with new missions, and the need to keep bringing in money.

I guess my point is the market is flooded with Terrorist games.... SWAT 4, CS, Tactical Ops and a ton of generic shooters. It's Call of Duty.... That name just doesn't say anything but WWII to me.....
