a bit of a late post, but I was convinced to get a copy near the end of the last OKGG-LAN. It didn't Download from Steam fully until yesterday with my limited online time (two weeks).
Got to playing it and all I can say is DANG. I'll reserve me reactions on multiplayer till I spend an hour or two playing it. But thus far it has replaced 2142 as my favorite reality-mimic FPS in it's single playe mode.
And so I'm eating crow on this one. just wish I had more time to play in general. and will add soem minor reply to this after 3+hours of multiplayer. whenever that happens.
..still trying to be a GRB when I can. Drix
P.S. Where th hell is everyone? There ain't nearly been enough posts since the upgrade finished. .. and yes, that is me in the new avatar. No, it's not me in the sig image. 😉
I've heard that the single player for COD4 is much better than the Multiplayer. At the same time, there are a lot of people who really like the multi-player.
Our buds over at =VF= have a COD4 server up. I think it is password protected to keep out random pubbers, but you would be welcome.
As for where everyone is.....beats the heck out of me, but we are usually a bit slower this time of year. Combine that with too many of us working too much, and you get the current activity.
I was planing on picking up COD4 soon myself. About 4 or 5 UT'ers on my team are playing it trying to rankup. That of course is the only thing I have against it, the rest of it is great as compared to BF's.
I've been busy as hell working on a new UT3 team and website. I even bought a .com 🙂 Our pubbers are dropping off alot however, I think custom maps are starting to hurt it too much, just too damn big to download, one map last week was 150meg!
Use xfire and if I can I'll join you in a couple of rounds next week.
So far, the largest download we've had with TF2 is 36MB compressed down to 18MB. Even then, it hasn't been too bad with the average size under 6MB.
Drix, great to see you man, but when did you get those psychedelic facial tattoos?
I still need to grab a multiplayer demo for CoD4 to see if I can even play it. As for Single Player, CoD has always stuck me as a game that had a more engaging single player than multiplayer. Even my own CoD multiplayer experiences were either at a LAN or a small rifles only server. Anything else just sucked to me.
*chuckles* no tatoos, just my usual digital deconstruction.
but yeah, UT3 maps are huge. makes me miss UT2K4, which is still beautiful under the right map maker's hands. As for mutliplayer cod4... looked like a blast at the LAN. sad ting is I'm working on teaking the graphics settings for multiplayer. it's so difficult to see the enemy. It's not quite quake 3 yet. But I'm getting there. >:)
Multiplayer is equally good. The mix-up and varrious options on the unlocks leave for some very interesting kit combinations. I've seen ninja-like knife runners, ultimate camping b@#$%es, pistol marksman, bombing freaks, and many many takes on the standard soldier.
Myself, with the unlocks I've got so far to staff sargeant 2, I have recreated a better version of the PKM kit we had for a while in BF2. I'm LMG sniping, upped the hipshot accuracy so I'm not limited to dropping prone when I'm on my way from one place to another and upped the armor penetration giving me the ability to shoot through several walls before the bullet actually stops. Add to that the RPG toting, smoke grenade and a frag it's almost a varitable jack of all trades. Options seem nearly endless, and for the last week it's been very interesting.
Mostly been playing on the Dallas Domination server, which, as you might imagine gives me one of the lower pings in the server. Anyone else with it feel free to join me. Steam or Xfire makes it easy.
At this point i can easily say this game puts BF2 to complete shame, and is easily the best reality-mimic FPS we've seen in some time. ..if not yet. And I know, that's saying something. But one cannot deny its a complete package. Good single player, great multiplayer, almost completely stable graphics and engine. One might make an arguement for it not having a personally pilotable vehicle aspect. Myself, I like that one can focus onthe soldier aspect and airstrikes, chopper assists, UAVs, etc. are based on kill streaks. Therefore available to all, and not weilded by an all-powerful commander. And when employed work fine on their own, leaving you able to focus on the threat in front of you instead of finding some safe spot to direct the mass violence/assistance from.
It still takes the usual amount of FPS teamwork to accomplish things efficently. And wroking by yourself toward an object is just as difficult as it was in BF2. Not impossible, but you hope you don't get clipped by a chopper or run into a group that is working as a team.
Let me finally say the game was well worth the $50 I payed for it on Steam. Probably going to get a DVD copy of my second comp/visitor comp. Now I'm wondering if the xbox live people are playing, or whether or not they even have any option of playing against the rest of us. Unlikely. Still I'll save the LIVE/Microsoft complaints for another thread/another time. Just always looking for another opertunity to once again prove pointing devices+keyboard trumps gamepad everytime. >:)
I will admit the way you described the unlocks and kit build outs, it really makes me want to stay away from this. Seems like an unfair advantage for the hardcore players.
What were your thoughts on that, especially when you first started?
My buds on UT are getting a COD4 server since it suites their style better. They claim alot of it is more like DM than BF is.. So I guess I'll be getting it sooner than I thought.

The password was only temporary and has since been removed. Any GRB buddies are MORE than welcome to stop by: 72.232.145.38 : 28960.
We've really enjoyed the game since Strummer reconfigured it. We pulled it from ranked status, gave everybody all the unlocks and removed some of the whoring possibilities. Triple nades was just way too many for objective mode - 5 guys would show up and toss 15 nades into the room, giving the defenders little chance to hold it. We've also added several custom maps which really add variety to the existing gameplay - those custom maps will automatically download to your machine within a minute or two when you connect.
That being said our newest member just set up another COD4 server for us which is ranked, but he's still working on the configuration. I'll give you the IP to that one when he's done.

I found it interesting. honestly I like the options. none of the ulocks are hugely overpowering in and of themselves. The weapon unlocks aren't nessesarily better than the one before them. depends on your play style and the map. I've noticed a huge number of the higher ranked players I've ran into are using the MP5 SMG, and it's a starter gun. On the otherhand the P90 seems to lso beheavily used and it is theotherend of the spectrum.
Admittedly one can build a kit to favor thier playstyle. and that gives them an edge. myself i don't have a problem wit that. i also don't really mind those whom have been playing longer being able to have a bit better weaponry than those starting out. And for once it doesn't seem to be such a vast spread between.

😎
Heh, well I was 2nd. I think Atomm or Sarge said it better last nite, there were too many new games at one time. Hype made us buy the QW, TF2 had less system requirements, and I was diggin' UT3 for a long time.
COD4 is the only game out of the mix that could replace my UT sat nite addiction. Every once in a while, we can get everyone playing pistols only. Has the benefit of equalizing everyone, kinda like instagib.
Glad to get in some shots with ya last nite Drix 🙂
