I'll do whatever, but I am not sure how long I will have. Been busy and haven't slept in a week or so so my wife is getting pushy about going to bed on time.
I don't know, it was fun, but I struggled ALL night with exception of 1 map. I was encountering MAJOR lag. The one map with the pallace and the tv station, I might as well put a bull's eye on my back and stand there. I don't know why I was so laggy.
I had an average under 40 ping I have 3ghz P4 2g DDR400 memory 6800GT SATA drive
I've made all the performance tweaks, defragged my drive regularly, keep my cache's clean. I've been up one cylindar down the other on my drive, I even set my video and sound settings as low as they would go and It was still painful. I know duck is going to comment about EA rat bastards but what is my major malfunction here?
I really think the palace causes a lot of problems just like the temple did in BF2.
As far as doing well, you did better than me and I didn't have the problems. I know it was frustrating, but I found myself following you most the time Raze. :-)
As far as the issue, there are some tests we can do to rule out network performance, but it will be difficult to find the software I need. Then we will have to find someone who runs a server that would be willing to run the monitoring agents.
The Warlord map lags for just about everyone. I had an ok time last night. I have been spoiled playing CTF - no artillery or chopper whores to worry about. It was very frustrating last night getting artied every few minutes.
I'm wondering if my soundcard may be the culprit. you remember the hassle to get it working. I wonder if I am wearing it out? I do jam out a lot with mp3's, cranked up.
OK, I seen some info that I am trying. I've seen a few sites that recommend TURNING OFF the paging file if you have 2gig or greater memory due to EXCESSIVE amounts of swapping. I tried it and regular BF2 runs like a dream, too bad it can't help me hit the broad side of the barn. SF still had has some lag. I gave it the ultimate test and jumped on a server I got 41 ping to that was playing warlord 60/64 players. I could actually play out in the city but still could not get near the palace. I stood back and watched people fight near the palace and there were MANY people doing it with no problems. What are they doing that we are not? Pumping 6 grand into their computers?
They may be. PBF is loaded with people who lag on Warlord though. Every game I have ever played of that map someone other than myself has complained about lag. It's a fun map, but something just isn't right. I see it as being something like the Ho Chi Mihn Trail map from BFV.
Well I have 2 computers with 1GB each. I guess that counts.... :-)
Swap files are funny things. I once implemented a huge ass swap file thinking it would speed up my system. Let's just say it was a painful experience trying to undo it. :-)
I don't know? I don't seem to lag bad when in any of the maps! Even with 64 peeps on. Although there is one map my system crashes to reboot. (3 times in SF) I only have a 1.8 gig amd barton with a gig of ram. I do keep drivers updated and my drives defraged. I have the OS on one drive and games on another. But then again wth do I know. I never get to see a ping butter than 90. I would have thought with qwest DSL 800kb up 5meg down it would have been better! But from reading some of Bubbas Tech post I think I get it why! Bad Routing. Qwest Blows!
lol Hymen. Doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to who lags. Some people with good machines do, others with not so good machines do as well. With me, it could be the older Vid card I have, or that I haven't done much maintenance on my PC lately, or 50 other reasons. It's just irritating.
I have a theory. I believe it is poorly optimized objects using terrible net code. This combines to create a Lag affect with PC's struggle with Video issues and you throw in the network because you are playing on a server.
Would one of you that has problems with Warlord do me a favor? Connect to an empty server and see if you can recreate the problem.
In all honesty, I would really love to do some heavy duty network analysis with one of you that has a problem playing certain maps on a server. The only problem is not having a server of our own to use. If anyone is interested in volunteering, I'll see if I can get a GSP to provide us with a private server.
From there, we just need to get a bunch of people to help us fill it up for the test.
