At long last, we are delighted to confirm the impending Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars Public Beta. The ETQW Closed Beta has been going extremely well and yielding excellent results. We want to give more people the opportunity to give us feedback on the game so we’re going to open a Public Beta with 60,000 slots available. This way we’ll be able to test many more combinations of hardware, RAM, CPU, graphics card, drivers etc. than we’ve been able to ourselves, and also get a better idea of how the game plays for the general gaming public.

The Public Beta build will consist of a single map named “Sewer”, which is part of ETQW’s Pacific Campaign. Set in Japan, the map revolves around a Strogg base hidden in, well, a sewer. It’s an interesting mix of outdoor and indoor, vehicle and infantry combat, deployables and counter-deployables and good old-fashioned FPS combat.

If you’d like to help us finish ETQW, we’d really appreciate your participation. If you want to just play a game for free you may find it a frustrating experience. This Public Beta is not the Demo - it’s not the finished game, but an opportunity to get feedback from a large group of people while testing stability and performance on a wider range of hardware combinations. The Public Beta will also collect some information on your hardware configuration, so you shouldn’t apply unless you’re comfortable with that.

When the Public Beta opens, participants will be sent their unique license code that is required for play. As we don’t have the infrastructure necessary to download tens of thousands of clients, we’ve asked FilePlanet to help us distribute these license codes along with the beta clients.

A fixed number of beta slots are being set aside for Fileplanet subscribers, so if you already have a FilePlanet subscription, you’re in the front of the queue. The rest of the slots will then go to those with free FilePlanet accounts. To be clear: You don’t have to pay anyone anything to participate in the ETQW Public Beta. It’s up to you if you want to pay FilePlanet for use of the improved download services they provide.

We will reveal more details on the Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars Public Beta, including the official start date, in the near future. Hope to see you all online very soon!

Sounds like we're a few months away, at least, from the game release. Maybe we can get into the beta though. I don't care what they say, it'll be more fun than NOT being in the beta, and will give us a leg up on how the game will play.

Can the beta be much worse than BF2 was on release?

    🙂

    Oooh, I like that pic....

Yea, I'm hanging on to my account at fileplanet as long as I can, but I may have to cancel soon.

At the least, I would like to see a little of it.....

If we have an idea when it will be released, maybe we could sign up for Fileplanet for a month. . .what is it, like $10? It really gives me the red-ass that so many companies are lining up and kissing fileplanet's ass, but you can't fight the man. . .

I still think we should just get an unranked server of anything to mess around with for the summer. You guys are waiting on a pipedream here. Hell once they do get it released in Sep/Oct maybe it will be worth the hype..

This is getting as bad as waiting for DukeNukenForever to come out 🤣

ETQW wrote:ETQW Public Beta Distribution Details and Start Date!
Submitted by badman on Mon, 2007-06-18 18:36.

With the Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars Public Beta approaching, we have a few more bits of information about how the whole thing is organized, how you will be able to get your key, and, most importantly, when key distribution will actually start.

First off, I know there's some concern that most of the 60,000 Public Beta slots will go to FilePlanet subscribers - this is not the case. In fact, the keys are split right down the middle, with half going to subscribers and the other half to people with free FilePlanet accounts.

Now, the ETQW Public Beta client will not work without a valid beta key. With that in mind, your next question is undoubtedly "How the *bleep* do I get a key?" Aside from the fact that this is a family-friendly blog and I won't have that kind of language around here, it's pretty straightforward: There will be a special Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars Public Beta mini-site going up on FilePlanet that will be available throughout the key distribution phase. When you log into this site with your FilePlanet account and keys are available at that time, you'll get your key along with a download link for the beta client.

Let's move on to the actual distribution phase of the beta. As you're reading this, the beta is being released to a very limited number of select FilePlanet subscribers - we're calling this the sneak peek phase. Essentially, we're using this to test the delivery process and to see if there are any last minute showstopper issues. If you are a FilePlanet subscriber, you may get the chance to partake in this.

If the sneak peek goes well and no catastrophic issues crop up, we will move on to the actual key distribution phase. This is going to last several days and on each day we will make available a number of beta slots through the aforementioned ETQW sub-site on FilePlanet. During the first three days of this process, keys will be available to FilePlanet subscribers only. This will be followed by two days of keys for anyone with a free FilePlanet account.

The best part, and I've been waiting five paragraphs to say this, is that Day 1 of key distribution is currently scheduled for the middle of this week. That's right, the first batch of keys for the Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars Public Beta will go out in just a few days! FilePlanet's ETQW sub-site will be going up that same day.

Now why are we spreading these out over several days instead of throwing all 60,000 keys out at once? Simple: We want to make sure that as many people as possible get the chance to obtain a key and we feel that scheduling a predetermined number of keys to go out each day is the best way to do this. We're also going to be gradually ramping up the number of available keys with each passing day, so as time goes on, more keys are passed out per day. This allows us to steadily increase the load on our back-end infrastructure, making sure we can effectively test that.

Of course, a multiplayer beta is useless if there are no servers to play on. Towards that end, we've been working closely with a select number of Game Server Providers to get servers for the Public Beta up in North America, Europe, and Australia. We will continue to work with GSPs around the world to make sure Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars servers can be found in every major territory when the game ships.

One last thing: We will definitely keep you updated throughout the various phases of the Public Beta roll-out, so be sure to check the site regularly to find out the latest. If you have an RSS reader, you can grab our feed right here to stay up to date on all things ETQW.

We have to keep an ear to the ground on this. I hope they don't open key distribution at midnight Pacific time or something late like that, 'cuz all the keys for the day will be gone five minutes later. 🤦 As it stands, I'll bet no more than half of us get a key.

If anyone wants in on this, they better be checking back here, or somewhere else reliable FREQUENTLY. If you snooze, you'll lose.

reading through the reports of people beta testing has made me realize why I usually avoid those community discussion boards completely. I swear it's all the same 14 year old kids from PlanetBattlefield at the Quake site 😢

So far the items that I've gleaned from these threads are:
    • You have unlimited sprint
    • You are not supposed to be able to fire while sprinting although some people say that they can.
    • It is much faster than BF2
    • Go back to BF2 noob
    • There are jetpacks in the game and you can ski down hillsides with them or fly.
    • If you don't like strafing your a noob/If you use strafing you are a loser. (Strafing is rapidly moving left and right to try and avoid being hit while at the same time trying to hit your opponent.)
    • some of the vehicles are difficult to drive. "All or nothing" steering was mentioned.
    • Battlefield sux
    • Bunnyhopping seems to be in full effect at the moment.

Explain this one again? If I do not like strafing I am a noob meaning that it is good to do it. But if I do it I am a loser?? HUH???

Great news on the BunnyHopping front 🙁

Hell this may be a game created for kids after all. Can I have a grown up game please?

Strafing was explained to be basically "a dance" of moving back and forth shooting at your opponent. Apparently if you wiggle fast enough (think hitting ADADADADADADAADDADADAAD as fast as you can) you make yourself a harder target and if your aim is good enough, you can take people out while doing this. Some people call it skill, others call it exploiting, and others say the skill is being able to headshot the f*ckers that are doing it.

sounds a bit like the Quake Wars equivalent to dolphin diving to me, or the standing to kneeling move that some players do in BF2.

The ADADAD thing sounds like an exploit. Honest left or right strafing I have no problem with, but this smacks of hitbox manipulation to me. I never minded the "drop to a knee to fire" thing, as it seems like something you might do in a real firefight if you have the time. The "flopping to the ground and firing" thing is pretty old, though I've had some success simply rocketing the feet of the person I'm facing. The "Flop" is way too predictable. If I'm with someone when we face a "Flopper", we should have an advantage even if I miss - it should be enough to screw with their vision for a couple seconds, and do SOME damage. It takes me that long to switch to the shotgun, tho, and then I have to close on them to effectively engage.

This is still active at this time if you have a fileplanet subscription (not a free account). You might be able to get one if you are quick.

    Badman wrote:Hey everyone,

As you know, the Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars Public Beta Sneak Peek phase is currently in full swing and FilePlanet has been giving out beta keys to new subscribers.

We know there are many FilePlanet subscribers on this forum eagerly anticipating the start of the ETQW Public Beta, so with the subscriber phase right around the corner, FilePlanet has released a limited number of keys that are available right now as part of the sneak peek phase. This will allow the subscribers among you to get in on the action before the rush later in the week.

If you currently have a FilePlanet or Founder's Club subscription and want to participate in the beta, head to the following URL:

    http://www.fileplanet.com/betas/qw_s..._subs_key.aspx

Please keep in mind that the available keys are limited in number and we expect them to go quickly. These additional sneak peak slots also don't count against the 60,000 slot limit, so the full number of slots will still be available during when we're doing the full roll-out.

I'll update this post once the available slots have been filled.

I went to Fileplanet, even tho I'm not a paid subscriber. I clicked on the link, and it asked me some q's about my hardware. After that, it said my hardware doesn't qualify for the Beta.

Maybe I'll try again with different hardware specs.

I got a 3.0, that's what the hold-up is. Thanks for the info Atomm. I sure as hell hope I can squeak by decently on 3.0, as I'm NOT upgrading this machine until next year. Hell, I just upgraded to 3.0 late last year.

Good freakin lord.... thought this thread was about ETQW?

Well, damn it I am bringing it back to where is should be. Currently 277megs downloaded so far, I knew I still had fileplanet sub for something. 🙂

HEH! Cool! Does that mean we might see you in teamspeak again?

    ts.gamersradio.com:8822

BTW, be very careful about touching the video settings. Not only did it mess up my OS settings, but it fubared BF2's on top of that. I had to uninstall and reinstall the drivers to get everything back to normal.

teamspeak??? You mean that still is around... hehe

Will have to reinstall that since we use ventrillo. curious on how this will work with vista ultimate using a 26" widescreen TV as the monitor.

    746megs downloaded so far. 🙂
  24. #24
    Showoff!

At least you should be able to see enough to hit them.... 😛

Ok, High Video setting does not appear to be my friend. I changed it to low and everything ran rather well. It didn't look as good as I wanted, but I'm sure there is still some optimization that needs to be done.

I'll try medium video settings next time.

  25. #26
Sweet! Everyone grab it, so we can check it out together. Goose and I played a bit last night. It was fun, but keep in mind, the learning curve is slightly higher than BF2. I would say it's closer to learning how the Commander works.

One thing I hope they include is more advanced video options. For the moment, all I can see is High/Medium/Low. I would like to be able to tweak the various settings separately, similar to BF2. For all I know, you can tweak them individually and I just didn't see it.

  26. #28
    Who got it?

My guess is the Quake Wars Registration Key giveaway, day 5 (THE LAST DAY, MIND YOU) will begin in the next hour.

It's currently ~2:05 pm Eastern. It will DEFINITELY happen today, as posted on File Planet, though I'm not sure when.

I have mine, go get yours or be left out in the cold. 🙁

Hmmm. my last post here disapeared.

Anyways, I reinstalled it, tried setting everything to low quality and tried diff refresh rates on my monitor but QW still locks up everthing as soon as I try to join a server, empty or populatated.

After about 5-6 hard reboots I give up.

Lexx, at this point, I just HAVE TO say this:

Let somebody ELSE put together your computer and install the OS.

    OR

Stop buying your parts at "Jose's House of Tex-Mex and Computer Parts."

It seems like you have issues with about 50% of the games you install. I think your shit is all jacked-up an 'at. 😛
  30. #33
    werd

not that QW isn't problematic. It took me several video driver installs to get it to function and even then if I take it to anything above "low" settings it crashes. My system is however, well below spec for the game, and it is a beta so I don't expect too much.

I have also been having some issues in BF though lately too so I need to track down the cause 😒
  31. #34
    Lexx,

I did some searching. Here are possible solutions:

Update Video Drivers to the latest version.

Typing the password incorrectly, then correcting it can cause authentication issues when trying to connect to a server. Seems the only solution to this is time.

Try connecting again. If it hangs, hit ~ and see what the message is. Also, I believe you can run it in windowed mode with a special command to see the debug output. I am still looking for this info.

One other thing you might try is to turn ZoneAlarm off temporarily and see if you can connect. If so, then you may need to add additional ports.

    Hope that helps!

And I am with Doc on this.... Get a Dell Dude!

Now these make sense, especially the password.

Nahh, my hardware is running perfect now. I had to replace a powersupply that was over/under specs that was heating my harddrives to toast. Right now I just have a 350w so its running lean. I even have Vi*ta running perfectly with a dualboot.

Only prob I've had is BF2 and QW, everything else is fine. However after reading the dualcore convo that unraveled nerves, I wouldn't mind a new Dell this fall, but I hate to lose my ram/vid card/etc.etc.

I'll try these tonite, I just ultra hate hard resets 🙂 I just wanted to see what it looked like 🙁

    Atomm wrote:

No, but I've been running tests with other software. I've scrubbed my xp install with a couple of winoptimizer pgms and setup another drive for dual installs... ie, install to e:/ a pgm like UT04. Copy and rename it, reboot with V, install again, then delete the new install, ren ren'ed back, then both xp and V will see it the same afterwards.

There are however too many utils I like that didn't work with V, so its just a novelity or curiosity atm.

I only installed QW on the xp partition tho. I could try it on the V to see if I fare better however.

I would not buy a Dell for gaming man, stick to building your own computer for gaming. I really like Dells for normal computing but to get a Dell that has a descent enough MB for gaming you will spend a ton of money. You can get much better performing MB's and parts much cheaper, the same way we have always been doing it.

I will help you out, just give me a call.

I got bitched out by my boss when I used to sell computers at "Sun TV". We were at a sales meeting with the Packard Bell reps, and I told them that the salespeople call them "Packard Hells". I said that their machines were poorly thought out, and their proprietary hardware made it a hard sell.

Nice to see they listened to me. That was in 1991. 🙂

Snatch!.... back on track here 😉

I tried QW again today finally. Carefully typed in the password.. it works! I got on an empty server and it worked but I kept getting jerked or held in place, like packets had to clear. Kinda reminds me of speed hack freezing in UT prior to the first couple of patches.

With the lowest settings however it looks interesting. I loved the QII sound effects. It really sets the mood for an alien battle. I like this about it. The rest of it kinda reminds me of BF, movements, weapons, etc, and I suppose that isn't all bad.

This is how 2142 should have looked like imho. At least all the controls remapped, hehehe.

Lets hope the demo plays better tho. I was by myself with a 52ping and the movement was really laggy, but it was good enough to get a look at the game.

How long will this beta work. Perhaps the team can try QW for FNF?

I kind of like QW. I say we all try this for this FnF, why not, most of us have it now.

I know you will yell at me Lexx but I think I like BF2142 better though. QW is lots of fun do not get me wrong but 2142 offers more like spotting and squads, spawn beacons and lots of cool weapons and items to play with and other things. Say what you want about it not remember some keys up front but as a game, on a normal system that does not crash everything but UT2004, it is fine. 😉

    It is only my opinion...

Thanx Sarge, yeah, looks like you just have to run the game.

A tasty video treat for those to compare.

A twitch-gamers perspective of ETQW and BF2142. SFW

As far as just first-looks and a bit of board-reading I would have to show preference to 2142 for general play. I had a feeling it would be a bit UT Onslaughtish and as such had a bit of hope for it in that perspective.. it has now been regulated to the twitch/onslaught category to me. Which is fine for speed times as long as I have a machine that is up for it.. but my uber eleet skills are well off base for any extreme fun.

This is where EA and ID are screwing the games for me. I could give a shit less about the uber skills per game, its the ranking and powerups that takes all the fun outta it for me. Thats why I reset Friday nite. 6 straight deaths doesn't mean I have to be stupid enough to stay for another purple heart.

I really don't want to put anymore funds into an EA ranked server, thank you very much.
