Lack of Custom BF2 Maps

I have been looking into custom maps for BF2. I am very suprised by the lack of maps right now. Considering how many people are playing BF2 and how many people made maps for previous Battlefield games, I really expected to find a lot of maps.

Even more interesting is the number of recreations being made.

Which leads me to my point. Why is this?

Are the new tools too complicated?
Are the new tools too buggy?
Have people given up on making custom maps?

This makes me wonder, would DICE have been better off releasing updated versions of the older tools? Is the learning curve too high?

Maybe we should investigate this further with some of the mods. I would love to get an opinion on this. Sounds like a fun podcast.

I agree and have been wondering the same thing. I mean with BFV there were custom maps within hours of the tools being released as I remember. I have never been able to figure it out, guess I am stupid when it comes to making BF maps, even though in real life I am a mapmaker.

    One word. "Ranked"

I fear BF2 is the first step to kill the heart of their following.

having messed with them some, I think it is partially that they are confusing and difficult to use in some ways. It is also extremely time consuming to make a map. I spent probably 4-5 hours just getting the landscape in what I thought might be a resonable shape. That was as far as I made it.

Exactly! I fear putting all the tools in one editor was a bad move. I feel that they should have released 2 much like before. Map Editor, MOD tools. For the casual mapper, myself included, who didn't want to make a mod but just a map, it sux.

I agree with everything you guys have said, but I'd like to add one more thing. With the higher learning curve and the the lack of a easy way to deliver maps to the client, the reward for spending hours upon hours seems almost worthless.

After 3 battlefield games, I am very disappointed by the fact that DICE refuses to even try to offer a way for the community to deliver custom content. I really think Desert Combat blinded them. They can't get past the modders and it's a shame.

Yeah, I would be all for making some maps for this game, but I fear I don't have time to learn the editor. A bit too much power. If we're serious about this mod-ness, as we appear to be, I can force myself to learn it, I just don't know how much time I have to contribute.
