looking for a new FPS

I just recently finished putting together my system and I am looking for a good first person shooter to pick up. Is anyone here waiting for the release of anything new in the next few weeks or has something monumental been released recently that would be worth picking up. I've been somewhat under a rock for the past 7 months.

How about Quake Wars. It is hitting stores here shortly marketed as the BF2 killer.

What Cold said. Most of us have "Quake Wars" on pre-order, and we'll play it a lot when it comes out June 5th. . .we'll see if it's good enough to replace BF2 as our main game.

"Frontlines: Fuel of War" is coming out later in the Fall, and that's another one we're keeping a close eye on. That one is being made by the people who made Desert Combat, the popular mod for Battlefield 1942 and the spiritual father of Battlefield 2.

So look for "Quake Wars" June 5th, and keep an eye out for "Frontlines: Fuel of War."

We should have a server for QW when it comes out. Also, we are working on having a server for the QW demo due out in a few weeks. It's a Fileplanet exclusive, so you have to pay for the subscription.

Eff File Planet. I'm going to stop downloading from them so they can't count me as someone who's seen their ads. I'm going to stop posting links to their site for other ppl to download from. And if I could, I'd REALLY like to give an earful to the game companies that charge us for demos. I'd love to do that.

I've been playing ID's games since Castle Wolfenstein 3D, and they have to set up these pay to try demos? I don't possess language harsh enough to express how I feel about that.

I was just thinking. . .when did you ever think you'd hear or see the phrases, "pay to try demos" or ,"charge us for demos."

I hope this isn't a sign of bad things to come. ID doesnt' need to take any notes from how EA operates. On the FPS front Rambo, my UT 04' division still plays UT every Fri/Sat nite without all the drama.

I'm not really all that hyped about QW coming out yet. Its still too far and its way toooooo nice outside at the moment 🙂

Of course you are not. Because it will not be an arcade, shoot em up man. You already said you will not like the cool new game types of UT2007 because it takes that away from you. You are not into team games that require a bit of working with others to achieve a goal. Unless it is constant arcade type action. You like running around and just shooting anything that moves 😉

Do not get me wrong, that is cool if that is you thing. You are an "A" type. I am just saying that you and I differ in what we want out of a game. 😉

Heh, gotta love that UT attack. Hey it beats doing nothing Sat nites. I've not seen this team play BF on a Sat in ages.

I dont' know where you get your ideas from, but we haven't played single deathmatch since forever. Every game/map is a team game. One side or the other wins 🙂 TDM is cordinated for offensive/defensive plays, keeping control of powerups, etc. CTF requires total cooperation in/out of the base, etc., etc..

You just get jealous its not as 'complicated' as BF2, or requires 50 players to have fun. Each game has strengths/weakness' so lets just call it a draw, ok? Since I have hardly ever missed a BF FNF, it not much of a biased remark.

Point was, on Sat nites we are averaging 2 to 3 servers maxed out during prime times. Not bad for a 3+yr old game.

Without a playable demo, and I'm certainly not going to pay to get the demo, its kind of hard to get all hyped up, especially considering the Q4 engine. Because of its limitations, I've not been able to get one UT player to preorder it. Lets hope the demo changes some minds.

I can't find anything anywhere that says that there will definitely be a Fileplanet only demo. I've only found that there will be a demo and that it will be a 2-3 weeks ahead of the game. There is currently a closed beta going on. The only things I've been able to find that involve Fileplanet are people saying that they "heard" that there was an exclusive demo or something.

Lexx I am just busting your nads man. 😉

I am hardly jealous of a game that I own and have played countless hours in. 😉 I am just saying that you have a history of liking the constant action type of games. As I said that is not a bad thing. Hell I am jealous that you have the patience for that, I just do not anymore.

Team work in UT is hardly the same as in BF2 though man. Totally different type of teamwork. You usually play BF2 on the opposite team or by yourself doing your own thing. If you are in our squad and we stay to simply defend a flag you get bored really fast 😉

I can only play UT in small doses anymore. To me it is just as frustrating as the bunny hopping lamers in BF2. Bouncing off walls and jumping all over the place. IG just plain sucks and most do not like the game types I actually like........ Sorry.....

Even if it is a Fileplanet Exclusive download I have faith in the community that there will be a torrent or an alternate host posted within moments of the first day of downloads.

I don't know about that cold. In the past, they've locked these exclusives down pretty well. They have some sort of key system that's tied to your account and computer. But, we can keep an eye out for it.... :-)

Yeah, that's what I'm afraid of. WTF is up with this? You realize ID GAVE AWAY WOLFENSTEIN 3-D, trusting the people to pay a shareware fee. Now they want to collude with another company to get people to pony up cash for their demo? How does it even benefit ID to do this? Why does the 800-pound gorilla want or need to lend a hand to File Planet, and doesn't limiting distribution of their demo hurt their own sales?

Actually, I believe GameSpy pays them to do this. And exclusivity actually creates a sense of need. Usually, they give the paid guys first shot, then release it right when the game comes out.

Either way, I'll be there on Day 1 to try it and to get our server running.

I have a gamespy acct free with my broadband. If needed Atomm you can use that so you don't have to buy one to get a server up.

It's cool. I already had a paid account.

If you don't think you'll have time to use it, maybe we could raffle it off to the other GRB's or something?

Thanks. I made a few changes since the first posting. . .I had a persistent spelling error that I kept thinking I'd fixed, and I also added the whole right-side shield area.

I checked Xfire, everyone was away from keys. I should've left it running though - I forget it's your free weekend. Anyway, I got a silver. . .I always do better when I don't have to compete with other GRBs! 😀

Good one! I like it. It's kinda small, but a lot of forums don't like the big sigs we're been using. We've been getting away with it over on PBF, but I'm pretty sure our sigs are over-sized.

I'd like to remake it somehow, but I'm not sure... I'm playing with some ideas.

I was pretty proud of it actually. It was the first time I had something in my head and was able to actually reproduce it. The padded wall is my favorite. I actually stitched it all together from a small patch, copied over and over.

Honestly, I'm looking forward to 3 FPS's in the near future.

First is Halo 2 for Vista. while a good number here aren't so interested in this, I absolutely loved the first one. And so will not be missing out in Halo 2's funness. Especially with the map editing options. I've not done much map editing since UT2K4.

Second is Quake Wars, for many of the reasons listed above.

As for fun games... I looking most forward to Team Fortress 2, which is being released with Half Life episode 2; along with Portal (which also looks interesting). Team fortress promises to just be plain fun and entertaining. Whereas quake wars will be more serious like BF2 was. Some part of me misses the funness we had with games like UT2K4. So some cartoon physics are always good.

I'm excited about Team Fortress 2 as well. I'll probably order it direct from Steam just because I know they will get more profit that way.....

No shit? I'm sorry I didn't remark on that one. I got this off Usenet somewhere, I have the full-size version, as well. . .my version is called "nearly the cover". . .and I wish I could remember what it came with. . .I think it's related to a Spirit album, but I can't be sure.
