Anyone play this? I used to run a server for friends and family, but usage dwindled to nothing and since I got BF3 and SWTOR I haven't touched the game.
Minecraft?

#2 Read a bit about it -
Some of the gaming Podcasts I listen to says its as addiction as your favorite MMO.
Not played it as I am one of those "OH LOOK SHINY" kind of compulsive people and know it would be a year before I break the cycle. -
#3 it really doesn't have any carrot on a stick schemes like most MMO's have to keep you playing, but for some reason you will waste ungodly amounts of time in this game if you ever get hooked.
You have dodged a bullet so far, I was only able to be pulled from that downward spiral by the 2 bright and shiny things I mentioned previously. -
#4 I think ephil played Minecraft quite a bit. Like duck, I'm worried about the time suck that occurs with that sort of thing. -
#5 [Beavis].... He said Suck....[/Beavis] -
#6 Yeah ephil played it for a while.. I have it, and have played it.. and made quite a few epic creations on various worlds. Some griefing occurred and general loss of interest even after joining other friend servers.. Haven't been on since the middle of the year.. so I am sure there have been a great many changes. The nether had just recently made an appearance last I played. It was definitly worth the few bucks it cost back in beta. Of course now I have been staring at the Minecraft for Android on my xPeria Play and it seems like a possiblity... again. -
#7 On the subject of minecraft.. the best commercial for it: -
#8 I installed it to see what the big deal is, I don't really 'get it'. But I am amazed at just how addicted people seem to be, almost to the WoW level. -

Yeah its a pretty much love or hate game. In order to enjoy it you have to 'want' to get something out of the game. i.e. build a house safe from the creepers & nighttime. Or build the mines of moria.. or an underwater city.. or whatever. As everything is a ratio of time the need to get the materials for better tools and items of use becomes time consuming .. and fun in an escapist sort of way. -
#10 yeah, I have a highly addictive personality and I like to say it comes with A.D.D. I have a core set of "hobbies" I stick with, but I am constantly trying new things...with this I usually set my own personal goals in games and this is where MC trapped me.
oh my nice little house, I wonder if I can make a log cabin mansion...wonder if I can make the STL Arch, a 128x128 pyramid sounds fun to build...etc. It never ended...then I found BF3 and their damn unlocks. Now I don't have to create my own goals, BF3 does that for me.
And of course SWTOR and their built in carrot on a stick (thankfully they don't have an achievement system in place yet).
MC is definitely a game that is either hated or loved, nothing in between. It gets really addictive when you find a group of coordinated people and you actually start building massive projects like whole towns and villages.
Alot has changed since it went full release in Nov (NPC's, new baddies, XP, enchanting, villages, etc) but I haven't had time to go back to it in several months, I am sure I will switch back at some point. -
#11 I really thought BF3 was going to suck me in (...he said suck...) too - I really am a sucker for games with unlocks.
BF3 is just not there for me for some reason. -
#12 I play MC off and on now... Have a private home server for the family to jump on... I mainly just now play with different red stone ideas to see what I can come up with...
I may start working on a large scale thing here soon to have an ongoing project with a goal... Just need to think about what it is going to be... -
#13 Most likely it'll be a statue of me, I am honored! -

#15 Been playing with the Buildcraft mod... Kinda fun making machines with pipes and such... -
#16 ephil, what do you mean by red stones? -
#17 Atomm wrote:ephil, what do you mean by red stones?
Way past just red stone use... 🙂
This mod lets you build quarries that you power with engines... Connect these quarries by pipes to filters that you make to sort everything that they dig into chests... Then, have pipes coming out of the chests to go to automatic builders to build whatever you want...
Its a lot of fun to play with...
I plan on adding in the "Better than wolves" mod as well to build some crazy automatic things...
So far with BuildCraft I have built 4 quarries... Three powered by steam engines...
I built a combustion engine that I have lava being pumped to it for fuel and water being pumped to it to keep it cool. This engine is connected to another quarry...
All of the quarries are piped into the filter system I mentioned above and I am working on automatic building stuff now.
Problem is... I kinda want to build an electrical grid system that is connected to a power plant before I go any further... Dunno... Will see what I can think of once I add in the "Better than Wolves" mod as that changes everything 🙂 -

yup, ephil suffers from MC addiction... -
#19 Ok... So I wanted to play more with my dispenser... So I built a new one... This is with BuildCraft only as I have not taken the time to try and get it Better than Wolves installed yet...
Here you can see my minecraft gallery... Ignore what was going to be a massive tree house and you can see what I have done in the area of a dispenser...

#20 Got my nephew Minecraft and he loves it.
I think I may setup another server and open it up to the public. I have some friends who's kids also play it so I might make a "family friendly" public server.
I will let you know if I decide to set one up if anyone is interested. -
#21 Sure, hit me with it... If public, I assume you will run a Bukkit server with griefing protecting and such? -

Hello Zombie Thread!!!!
So I finally got around to setting up a minecraft server. I am going to whitelist it so if anyone is remotely interested in joining let me know your username.
addresss: zcweb.no-ip.org default port
website: http://zcweb.no-ip.org:81/
It runs on an old AMD X2 w/ 4GB of RAM so it isn't the fastest thing. I do plan to upgrade my server at the house sometime in the next year to something quite a bit more powerful.
I also set this up to play with my nephew (he is 5) so be warned if something gets damaged slightly. If it becomes a problem I will increase the backup periods. I do have a co worker who's kids also play on it (6 and 9) and may end up with a couple of more kids playing on the server as well. -
#23 Cool Deal. My kids (and I occassionally) play Minecraft on the Xbox. If we/they ever move to the PC side, I'll keep this in mind. -
#24 Add me to your whitelist bud

#25 I hear minecraft is addicting as Tbagging Bubaba - er I mean WoW.
