I think the reason the editor hasn't been release yet is due to marketing. Make the user's play default maps on our server as long as possible.
I have the feeling that EA may be wanting to move away from "customs" and private servers. This "ranked" server thing is a test. Give them a "free" sample of crack (ranked server) and make them pay for more. Basically what I'm saying is, I would not be surprised if BF3 (should they make it, or even BF2 in a future patch) has a pay to play on ranked servers.
Just a thought I had to get out of my head or I'd contemplate on it all night and would not sleep. I'm wierd like that.

These are the people that are going to start to migrate to unranked servers if there is some good content.

Did the pay to play thing with Sony 2 years ago, what a nightmare. i can't remember the name of the game but it revolved around 3 teams on a planet and so on and so forth. After the first month I tried to close my subscription and after numerous 15-20 minute waits to talk w/ customer service, angry emails and 2 months more of being charged I finally got the account closed. I have sworn off buying anything Sony since. I hope EA doesn't go in that direction.
You should see the global requirements of some of the awards/rankings/medals.. dear god.. And it isnt just your Score.. Time plays a major factor.. Talking up to 6000 Global Hours for one medal.. others range 250..2000..4000..5000.. I think for the Veteran Tank badge I want.. requires 250 hours.. that's..250 of logged time in a tank.. I have... 22..so I'm guessing perhaps..hmm but Halloween?
I think bf2s.com has a link.. righthand side that breaksdown the times.. I made Corporal last night.. Now have both the Jackhammer and Special Ops upgrade.. I like it more then the M4.. even without the sight..
I actually do like the long length of time to a degree.. means you really won't have everything possible for a long long time.. so tends to encourage people to look more away from the stats cuz there isnt anything you can do about it other then play.. and the variety should be wide ranged.. with how you have to choose.. more-or-less.. a specific path to get higher level awards/ribbons/medals..
I fully expect Duck to get the Purple Heart when he plays 😉 I'll make sure of it... :twisted:
Duck hit on an important factor. I use to play MMORPG's. I still play WoW from time to time. When I switched to FPS's, it was like I got my life back. I could log in, play an hour and walk away. I had fun and I didn't loose a whole day. When a FPS becomes this constant grind, I am turned off.
In all honesty, I would rather play on unranked servers and look forward to play BFA and the WWII mods when they are released.
However, despite EA's meddling, BF2 at the core is a great team game. I have seen more teamplay and been involved in more teamplay than any of the other BF games.
Just do what I'm doing.. the 10,500 mark is fairly easy to hit.. Just don't think about it.. and when it happens it happens.. in fact.. your spoiled at first with all sorts of ribbons..awards..medals.. but it works out so that you are rewarded few and far between.. I think this will have the effect of really making you appreciate it that much more... Just play and don't give it a second thought.. all that matters is winning the round 😉

Sitting in a tank idle wont work either as a server needs 10 to be ranked.. and I doubt the other team will let a tank idle someplace 😉
I love the teamplay amount as well.. what I'm not seeing as much though.. are medics reviving.. it's weird.. saw it a lot in the Demo not so much now.. Rob, one of our PD's at the station has been sklling it up as a Sniper.. he's pretty wicked good at it.. And Olly some of you have met.. works well as a team member in any situation.. he's an "all-arounder" like myself.. So it looks like could have a really good team set for when TWL starts.. just gotta get Rob n' olly to post here 🙂
