I wanted to post my experience this second time around for others to benefit from the mistakes I made.
We switched servers due to lag and decided to play the Taurens. I picked a Tauren hunter. Previously, I was Human fighter. As a Human, I did quite well. I was able to move my armour up by trading out pieces as I looted them from corpses and I was able to trade up on my weapons as I completed quests.
As a Tauren, the armour part is harder. Most of the beasts are animals and don't wear armour, so I am not getting better armour through looting. That hurt me a bit. Where I made my biggest mistake is the quests. Most of the newbieville quests offered me two items to choose from. One was immediately usable and the other was red, indicating that I couldn't use it right now. The red items were way better than the items I could use immediately. I assumed I could use them as soon as I made level 5. Boy, was I wrong. I passed up a lot of ok items (still improved over what I had) and a better Axe to take the red items. This was a huge mistake and I am paying for it severely right now. It turns out the items I picked are not wearable by me until level 40. Even though I have made level 7, I am having a hard time fighting level 5-6 beasts. If 2 beasts gang up on me, I am toast. The reason is simple. My weapon does not do enough damage and my armour does not protect me very well. To make matters worse, I have been spending almost all the money I've earned to keep my basic items repaired. They seem to be damaged much faster. This has prevented me from being able to afford new weapons and armour. In hind sight, I should have traded up when the quests offered me the chance. I did this as a Human and it worked out fairly well. As a Tauren, I am struggling to get by. I died about 10 times last night alone. Major suckage.
I just wanted to share my experience, so someone else doesn't make the mistake I made. For the record, I like the Tauren Hunter. His tracking skill and ability to use Axes and Rifles is really cool. I just screwed up.
