The folks at ID were goodly enough to give away the source code to Quake 2 some time back. Some other folks were goodly (and bored) enough to work with it. The result is a (somewhat) graphically-enhanced freely distributable version of Quake 2 called Quake2Max.

There MAY be some mods we could play with this, though I couldn't be sure.
I DL'ed it (7MEG!!!) for a trip down memory lane, and figured it might be a good one-off evening of fun when things are slow around here. We have a big game release coming up so this isn't the best time to mention it, but I wanted to post it before it gets relegated to my biological bit-bucket.
Bonus fun. Here's a Doom 2 mod I never knew about that gave me a laugh when I saw it:

EDIT: ahh, looks like this thing "only works wit the full retail" of Quake 2. I'm gonna look into it further, since the source code for Q2 was given out years ago, maybe I can find a compiled version that will work with it.
