The game is absolutely FREE!!!!! so I hope to see you out there sometime. My ingame character I will be playing mostly is Hadaka and I will be with the VANU.

    I can buy free, easy

In the game you gain XP...that XP equates to "cert points", you get 1 cert per 250 or 500 xp (i forget exact conversion. You then spend certs on upgrades for weapons, vehicles, armor, etc.

The game is completely Free to Buy and Free to play, however you can spend station cash (real money) on things like cosmetic upgrades, purchasing cert points, buying specific upgrades outright or bonus buffs (ie +% XP gain, +% cert gain, etc)

So the game isn't really pay 2 win, but paying does get you to better stuff faster, but everything except cosmetics can be gained through playing for free...just takes longer.

Sony does over triple cash days from time to time, so you can go buy a $15 card and claim it on triple cash days and get $45 worth of station cash.

started to DL last night, at 31% this morning.........
noticed my wifes router dropping the connection every 30 seconds, unhooked it, plugged in directly to my PC, and DLed the other 69% in 2 hrs!

this router has been a pain im my arse since she got her laptop.....seems its been my bottleneck all along.....other than having to drain the water out of the cable every time it rained.

i feel like taking a hammer to it.

just to add, ill be on tonight, after the youngling goes to bed.....daytime gaming right now is at a minimum, as i am the youngling caregiver on my days off.

After talking with Mike about the issues I had in the past from Steam - and fuging up my registry with other games that I could have downloaded directly... I'm grabbing PS2 from the web and not Steam

Should have it installed and working by Monday (going to be a busy weekend)

Mike and Hadaka - is there a server "World" I need to start a toon on - if so where are you all at?
  6. #6
not sure of the world, nor the player......it dont matter, i can delete char, and start a new one.

the char im playing now is blue and yellow.

    [SpaceGhost] BF3 in spaaaaaaaaace [/SpaceGhost]

    *sigh*

I'm blue and Yellow too... and that's about all I understand of 2142 er.. PS2
Like BF3 I got killed A LOT by unknown people from unknown locations while I was doing unknown things (IE running around like Henny Penny)

I saw a lot of light assault guys walking in and out of solid walls (not the force field walls) killing people but I was unable to kill them when they were in the walls.

Lots of tanks killing our team by sitting BF3 style as immobile turrets

So I went medic and somehow healed someone then my healie-thingies stopped working.
So I respawned, got killed by a sitting tank and quit the game.

Let me know when your on - we need to get on vent to figure which server to connect to and how to make friends to play together.

    All in all.
[SpaceGhost ]Battlefield 2142 and beyond [/SapceGhost]

on now.....logging in to vent now.
  9. #9
Well if I can't see them to kill them - I went back to my old FPS fall back of medic which I always liked - and managed to reach rank 3

Also understanding a little more of certifications and specializations now too.

If you can't kill em' revive em and bring em back form the dead.

still meh - but at least I can do something now... with a better understanding of what I want to work on to become a better healer while I work on figuring out WTF is going on.

Some of the iCe players are trying this game out. I suggested that we could also try and team up with GRB. What do you think? I can't promise any thing but I might be able to get 3 - 4 players on certain nights, like in the old days.
  11. #11
The more the merrier as far as games go...trying to figure it out alone vs having others in your squad you know does make a difference.

An interesting side note - the game has limited local comms in that you can talk to people around you in game - just by pressing a hot key - I'm not sure what the range is... say 30 (game) feet and I think servers can turn it on or off.... but its kind of cool to not need special comms set ups with 3,000 people in channel - just those that are close enough to work in your little local group - nice touch.

I am on Waterson East server for the VANU. I don't mind trying a different faction with you guys on a different server.

    Also FYI-

There are multiple comm channels...Proximity, Squad, Platoon & Outfit. Each one of these has its own key to activate (z = squad, numpad 4 = proximity, etc. I think the voice is actually one of the better ingame voice setups compared to a lot of games.

Sorry I wasn't around over Tday, I only got to play some on Tues and on Sunday since I was hosting Thanksgiving this year and decided to smoke the turkey.

I am still loving the game!!!! However it is one of the more "Expensive" F2P games and here is why:

All unlocks are character locked...meaning if you unlock camo, guns, upgrades etc they are locked to that specific character on that server...they are not account wide. I don't mind this as that is how most MMO games are anyways...the only difference is you can spend actual $$ to unlock it for the character. If you know this up front it isn't so bad.

Now the actual unlocks are pretty expensive...some of the higher end unlocks are 1000 Certs or 750 SC (750 SC = $7.50). I have a 60% increase in XP gain and 50% cert gain and I earn about 10k XP an hour, this equates to 40 Certs per hour...making unlocking 1 big unlock ~25 hours of gameplay. THIS IS EXPENSIVE!!!! FYI - 10k is an underestimate.

There are lots and lots of smaller unlocks...ie Health increase, gun attachments, utility items (grenades, C4, etc) that range from 1 - 200 certs.

I spent $72 for a 6 month subscription to the game, this is were the 50% bonus XP gain comes in. If you don't play with it you should be averaging 5k - 8k XP/hour.

So overall comparing PS2 F2P model to other games (SWTOR, Tribes, DDO,etc) the game is on the expensive side but only if you spend actual money on it. I know some players have already dropped $100+ on upgrades but these are usually PS vets and fanboys that will be playing the game for years.
  13. #13
Oh, FYI there is a "Trial" option when purchasing guns....just go to unlock a gun and at the bottom there will be an "Unlock Trial". This will allow you to use the gun for 30 minutes and has an 8 hr cooldown.

This is a SONY game... SONY's reputation for account security / credit card / user information is less than shit.

I'd never consider going anywhere near real cash when SONY is involved.

Honestly - if Mike hadn't said he thought this game might be fun I would have already uninstalled it.
  15. #15
This is why I use temp Credit Card numbers from my bank when purchasing online. I also use a checking account that is only filled with the amount I need at the time that I need and isn't linked with any other account. The latter is how what I usually use for games, that way when they try to auto renew, it rejects with insufficient funds and I get a notification 🙂

As far as Sony's history, if anything their security is probably better now after recent issues.

I have never worried about giving money to online companies, but only because I take the proper precautions with all online transactions.

I personally have no issues with Sony or any other major publisher and giving money to them...assuming they provide a product worth my cash, which for me, Planetside 2 has made it worth every penny.

  16. #16
Yes - good idea on a separate game purchase account.

As far as Sony's history, if anything their security is probably better now after recent issues

There was no where to go BUT UP for their security in recent months.
Sad thing was - a hacker told them about it privately and they blew him off - because he was a "hacker"

So.... he made it public to the hacker community and THEN they suddenly wanted to talk about their issues... butt hen they had other issues.... like millions of accounts blown open for everyone and any one to use.

I'm not sure it will ever be totally cleaned up for them and the guy they hired to fix it... didn't do well at all. Took them from no security once you know what was what to a solid level 2 out of 100 and the account leaks and user info was redistributed all over again.

    SONY... hell no.

Duck wrote:Yes - good idea on a separate game purchase account.

Yeah, and if somehow my card info gets out, it usually only have a couple of bucks from left over change and they can't purchase anything with it. I also use a separate gmail account for gaming accounts or sites with not much reputation.

Also just in case you have never heard of it using a password locker, I have used a couple...lastpass is a new one I have yet to try but between SuperGenPass, something like lastpass, and a strong password for both, it is very difficult to hack an account and using a different password for every site (supergenpass) prevent cross contamination of leaked account information.

FYI - I use supergenpass to create an encrypted password hash (different for each site) that I then use as my password, I then store that password in a password locker that is also protected by an encrypted password....paranoid? maybe, ubersafe? definitely.

The recent hacks on sony isn't really surprising since they are a huge corporation and they act like it...the attitude towards the hacker isn't really that surprising either, but at the same time...Sony is huge making them a large target, and they just shot themselves in the foot in the way they handled it. This is why I keep things secure the way I do because I can only trust Blizzard, Sony, EA, etc so much.
  18. #18
lastpass is the one I use.... very rarely does it lose sync. I keep a back up of the account on my thumb drive that I can reload when it goes loopy.

But all in all I like it.

LevelCap does a review of the game.

So are we playing " Waterson East server for the VANU"

I installed and am goign to start it up today
  21. #21
Sarge and I are on SolTECH which is listed under east coast
Mike is lost in the basement ..... yes dear no dear
I could not remember where Hadaka was that's why we (I) chose SolTECH as its close you you and Mike.

Now Duck, I know you know how to read. I am pretty sure I listed it a few times to avoid this. Oh well, I should really lower my expectations of Duck, although I didn't think that was actually possible. =P

What faction are you playing so I can make an ALT? I already have money tied up into my Vanu guy on Waterson (also East Coast) so I will keep that as my main character. Feel free to join me on Waterson and look me up "Hadaka". Also, feel free to add me on STEAM also "Hadaka" and I joined the GRB Steam group.

I have a TR guy on Connery server too, but don't really play him alot unless I am hiding from my Outfit. When they make the unlocks account wide (Smed as mentioned they are working on it) then it won't be as big of a deal playing ALTs and having the unlocks.

I also don't mind picking up a character on SolTECH and playing when you all are playing, but it won't be my main character until unlocks become account wide. If I didn't already have money tied up into my main I would change in a heartbeat.

I don't care what server I play on and my guy is low enough that I don't mind starting over.

That being said, I can't see myself spending a huge amount of time in this game. I just couldn't really get into it on Friday night. Could be that I was just tired and stressed out however so I'll give it another try for sure. DDO and BF3 have burned me out on grinding for incremental power/equipment upgrades. As a level 1/2 guy in PS2, getting thrashed by level 18 and 20 guys consistently takes the fun away pretty quickly. That and the snipers.

  24. #24
I will admit, I was feeling the mood for a little COD this past week, any flavor. I strongly considered Black Ops 2 when I saw Ephil playing. May still happen

This is the problem with PS2....it has a high learning curve and the payout really shines in team play not solo. I can only solo now after many hours in the game and have a good time. Usually hot drop into a bio dome attack or hit the Crown on Indar.

I will say getting killed by level 18-20 is just a skill thing not a weapon thing but a skill/experience thing. I still use the default gun on 3 of the classes and tear things up. Heavy Assualt - Vanu - Orion is the best gun for Heavy Assault period. Running with an organized squad makes the game 10x better. I highly recommend hitting "P" in game and joining a squad, check the maps to see if they are actually placing objective markers and running together, if not, drop and try a different one. This will make the game EXTREMELY fun for you.

If you are ever on Vanu Waterson, look for a squad called "Sentinels" (not sentinel-gaming). I roll with them and on TS, but we open the squad to public players.

also, Sarge added me on Steam, feel free to add me and we can jump on our GRB TS and I can provide training to decrease the learning curve if you want.
  26. #26
Yah I'm sure you did somewhere .... I just didn't go back and look.

Like Sargiepoo said - I don't care where I am or how far I've gotten, I'll make a new one on your server.
I don't see any life in this game for me - other than running around with you all.

OK - I just created a PURPLE guy on the WATERSON server called otherwhitemeat
So when ever we get a chance we can try it together.

Mike hope your not too far in to it already also.
  27. #27
i dont have any $ wrapped up in this, so dropping, and creating a new guy that snipers can pick off means nothing to me.

We got players on Soltek server as Vanu. Perfect for an alt. if you all want to team up sometimes. Sarge, it does take time to get into it and the battles are big, bloody, messy affairs but you can always see which side has teamwork. I play the Medic (support) mostly due to the slight lag I get from being in Europe.
  31. #31
Caught your pm in WoT the other day but I was alt+Tab for my work and did not respond for quite a while - and not sure if you saw it.

I did add you as a friend and do have a tetrac that I can run wih the tracks you have in your tiers.... I'm also going to be opening an new American light line working to the M7 which will be the take off tank for the new t71 when comes along.

So a new tier 2 is coming soon also.... hit me up when you see me... we'll tear it up any time.
  32. #32
Be warned - Sony Online Entertainment - Planet Side 2 is a Mother FKKKer to uninstall -
It is in your system like stink on $!

Windows does not fully get it out
CCCleaner misses it in several areas

You have to manually go in and find the folders it resides and shred the hell out of them - then do a regedit to find all the missing frags.

I said it once before and I'll someday listen to my own words... NO MORE SONY on my PC's

Just know. If you have it and want to get it gone... it is hell getting all of it out of your system.
  33. #33
It is too bad you feel burned so much by Sony. They have done an excellent job with PS2 in my opinion.

If anyone is interested the outfit I run with will be doing some organized operations against TotaBiscuit on Jan 4th. If you aren't familiar with the Promo SOE is doing they basically took 3 youtubers and made them their "faction" leaders so to speak, and they are setting specific dates they are running attacks, well TotalBiscuit for the TR is planning to do an organized attack on Jan 4th.

Our outfit is allied with a couple of other outfits and plan to organize a counter attack. They use TS which isn't behind a password, so I should be able to get you in if your interested in seeing what PS2 is truly about.

    Info:

    TS info: teamspeak.vanu-sovereignty.com:9987

Steam & PS2 nickname for me is: Hadaka
