The BF2 mod, "Point of Existance" is going to be released Saturday the 26th at noon, with server files and password-encrypted Bittorrent client files released a couple days earlier.
Looks good, as far as the trailer shows, which of course you would EXPECT. I've heard good things about the bf1942 POE mod, and expectations are somewhat high for this mod.
Liking the looks of that... Love the number of tanks all lining up for a real battle. Hope that wasnt just for the movie. Would be nice to have a map like that for BF2, a larger armored map with more than just 1 or 2 tanks per side.
The biggest problem I had with POE for BFV was the lack of custom maps. I could care less about some new vehicle or weapon. I want new terrain and new tactics. For me, the mappers make the mod....
Played it. Enjoyed it. Having trouble getting used to the armor, but there is a lot of opportunity to play AT and a couple of very fun infantry only maps. So far, I'd say that this is a pretty good mod.
I played it. It looked good. Different feel, armor is different, but planes and choppers still rule the roost. Seems as hard, or harder, as infantry to deal with the air, but that's based on only 1 hour in-game.
The kits are shuffled up a bit: AT has both rockets and mines, but no aiming of the rocket. . . and dispite the preview video that shows a massive, room-clearing explosion of the AT rocket, this just does not happen. . .the video lies. It's pretty much the same as BF2, only unguided.
One interesting addition I saw was the ability to pick up kits lying in tents at spawn points. . .decide you should've been a sniper. . .good news! Also have seen AT rockets lying about, but when you pick these weapons up, it seems to drop your current main weapon. . .so you'll have no submachine gun, no mines. So you can switch out your main weapons, but not your entire kit. . .unless you find a dead soldier.
I did not get a chance to play the infantry maps. I will have to give them a try in the next couple days.
I hear what you say about the air power. I only played one map with planes and helos (Orel maybe?) and really didn't do much with the armor without getting just hammered by the attack helos. On the plus side, seems to be lots of cover and with no commander arti, scan or UAV you can actually hide. I had the most fun on a map called Fallen which is a pure infantry map. Each side has an uncappable with two capturable points in the middle. The map is all wooded with lots of places to hide and the opportunity to be sneaky or play defense. It's tough if you get yourself backed into the uncap, but still I thought it was fun because you weren't being blasted by armor/helos/jets/arti.
I played one other map which I don't know the name of that was infantry + jeeps/trucks and was centered around capturing/defending a town - that was good fun.
I played two maps that were armor/infantry and finally started getting a feel for the tanks on the last one. I still have trouble remembering which of the two selectable tank shells are better for any particular situation. Are the SABOT rounds for tank v. tank or is it the HEAT rounds?
POE2 Manual wrote:-Tank Rounds - Tanks generally have two types of rounds: Sabot and HEAP. Sabot is effective against armor targets such as main battle tanks and other armored vehicles. HEAP is effective against soft targets such as jeeps, helicopters, and clearing out a room full of infantry. Choose your round wisely. To switch you can use your up and down arrows on your keyboard or use the mouse wheel scroll.
F key also works for me on this as well.
The AT Pick up kit:
POE2 Manual wrote:The Panzerfaust3T anti tank round is the pure AT round. This kitâs only goal is to take out heavily armored vehicles such as MBTâs and APCâs. While not very effective against soft targets or infantry, a well placed 3T round in the rear will send any armor to the scrap yard.
Doc, this is what they must have used in the video - this is another pickup kit.
