While I think it will do ok... In this area, I think that for a "futuristic" type MMORPG, I am putting my money on the Matrix MMORPG... [Doub't I will play either though as I will be sticking with WoW] 🙂
I disagree with ephil. I think the Matrix missed it's time. It should have been released with the 2nd movie or between 2 and 3. Sure, it has a large following, but do you ever see Matrix Conventions? :-)
Star Trek on the other hand has a following that goes back more than 30 years. It has spun off countless movies and series. The problem is Star Trek is loosing the power it once had. I think it can be very successful if it gives you a chance to be a part of a ship. I don't know how they could pull it off, but having a whole crew structure above a ship would be awesome. As it stands, the free form may not translate well towards the military aspect of the actual shows.
I am a bit confused about your poll though. Should the responses be rise and fall? If I answer yes, which side am I taking. :-)
Sure... I can agree with you Atomm, but that wouldn't be me 🙂
I think that the Trek [gaming] world has never been that great and has been an thorn in the overall Star Trek world.. This is, of course, my opinion as I am sure there are many people out there in their Spock costumes playing some sort of Star Trek game right now...
My point of the Matrix game was mainly just due to the fact that there will be a ton of "The ones" running round looking for things to beat up... Not much need for a leader... But where will the leadership come from in the Star Trek MMORPG??? Maybe there is none... Maybe I need to read about it before I ramble on more about it...
Still... I think the Star Trek gameing world died a long time ago... Sorry...
Sounds interesting. I think the success will depend on how well they pull it off. Now, you couldn't tell me it wouldn't be cool to have the USS Gamers Radio.
Can I or my crew own a starship? You and/or your crew (clan, guild, etc.) can be made responsible for a starship for the purpose of an individual mission or an official commission.

Ephil - "Aye Captain!! The BFV servers have gone down an' I canna push them any harder!! "
Atomm replies - "Dammit ephil I need mortars and I need them now!"
Goose chimes in - "Atomm, it is most illogical to.."
<BANG>
Atomm -"Sorry GI, your federation has abandoned you....Mister Breaky, ahead warp factor 2...."
As long as I get to be the "SCIENCE" officer it's all good.
IMO, the overwhelming initial success of Star Wars Galaxies, even though it was a piece of shit MMORPG is wholly due to its fan base. While I will agree with Ephil that alot of ST games have been sub-par, the RPG environment has always had a big place among many of the ST fans. If this MMORPG is even only slightly better than mediocre, which would make it rougly 50,000x better than SWG, they would have a HUGE success.
Can you not see that the gaming world is turning into reality TV?!?!? Not only do I have to live my life, I have to play a life on the computer and then watch life on TV!!!!
Tell you what... Just stick with WoW and we will all be ok 🙂
OH HELL YEAH!!!!! Now we all can have sex with green chicks!!!!
Actually I have a feeling as soon as another Star Trek movie comes out it will good. Also heard somewhere that for the current "Enterprise" show they are going to continue to have previous characters coming back specifically Brent Spiner (Data from TNG) as Dr. Arik Soong. Also I even heard that LeVar Burton (Geordi from TNG) as well as William Shatner (you know whom and from where) will doing something. Funny thing is Shatner actually approached them about the part!!!
I really like Enterprise, but I have a feeling this is it's last season. First off, UPN isn't smart enough to pick a timeslot that will allow it to be successful. They keep going head to head with Smallville. If they were smart, they would start it after Smallville so the Geek audience can watch both.
I also heard they lowered the per-episode cost from 1.2 Million to 800k so UPN would pick it back up. The reason? They need 4 seasons to be able to sell it to syndication. So, Enterprise needs UPN more than UPN needs Enterprise. With the programming the way it is, I wouldn't count on a 5th season of Enterprise unless SCI-FI or a cable channel picks it up.
As for turning into reality TV, the powers that be are trying to get their hands into Gaming. Neilson already has a ratings system in place to track in game advertisements. Think about how bad that sucks.
