nice list Atomm, hopefully somehow EA will catch on. But I somehow doubt it.

Hey Tman - Been a while since we have seen any PDX guys around here. How's things?

Back on topic: I saw something about that today over at PlanetBattlefield:

Gamespot wrote:On a peculiar note, even though the world is ending in 2142, it appears that advertising will still be around. Battlefield 2142 features in-game ads, though we didn't get to see them firsthand during our testing. Still, there is a printed disclaimer that comes with the game telling you that Battlefield 2142 will analyze certain "advertising data" on your machine to determine what ads to display to you. Ironically, EA says that if you don't want your data shared with its advertising partner then "do not install or play the software on any platform that is used to connect to the Internet." But that would pretty much defeat the purpose of playing Battlefield 2142, wouldn't it? Of course, you could always play single-player against the artificial intelligence, though the AI won't be mistaken for human opponents any time soon, and the single-player is still limited to 16-player maps. Still, this is an example of things to come, as we begin to see dynamic in-game ads appear in more and more games.

They also had this little tidbit:
Gamespot Review wrote:Thankfully, 2142 has a cool new feature in Titan mode to accompany the traditional conquest mode. This is the first new mode introduced in Battlefield since the series' inception, and it's a great one.

Does no one remember that BF42 had TDM and CTF, as well as the objective mode stuff from Secret Weapons? It really surprises me what is being said about titan mode. While I'm happy that they are diversifying the modes available, to say that it is the first new mode is just plain wrong.

I wonder that if you found a way to get around the ads, if that would be considered "hacking" and enforceable by Punkbuster or EA?

In theory wouldn't it be as simple as figuring out the port that the advertising stream uses and blocking it?

You should be able to figure out the URL it uses, then add that URL to your host file and point it to 127.0.0.1. If I could find someone who has a copy, I could figure it out and write up a tutorial. :-)

Yeah that would be good, but then again, it will probably result in a "can not find server error" and you won't be able to connect.

Also - if EA is planning on using some sort of service while you're surfing, I hope that WinPatrol will find it. That proggy is awesome at letting me stop crap from installing itself. (www.winpatrol.com)

BTW - Been a while Atomm! Been playing BF2 and POE. Although we're growing tired of BF2 and this BF 2142, while it will be OK for a bit, we're looking forward to either Quake Wars or UTK07. However, with this spyware crap, entirely possible that many may forgo it.

  10. #12
Wow Tman, we are right there with you. BF2 can only take us so far. With all the crap EA is doing with BF2142, we are in limbo until Quake Wars and UT2007 come out.

Also, check out Frontlines: Fuel of War www.frontlinesgame.com

It is the new game being developed by Trauma of the DC mod. It looks incredible.

Its amazing how far EA has gone to ruin the experience as compared to 1942. Used to be we waited with great expectations for the next FPS or its sequeal. Now, its only to be looked upon with skepticism. Whats really next for the BF series? MMORPGH with a monthly subscription? Looking at the ranking, powerups, and the 2142 kits, that seems to be damn likely.

Its going to take a clan working as a team to work 'quests'... well 2142 is damn near that already 🙁

Spyware and advertising... pretty damn unreal.

Come Jan 07, we should know how many lemmings bought this joke.

I think the final statement says it all....

IF YOU DO NOT WANT IGA TO COLLECT, USE, STORE OR TRANSMIT THE DATA DESCRIBED IN THIS SECTION, DO NOT INSTALL OF PLAY THE SOFTWARE ON ANY PLATFORM THAT IS USED TO CONNECT TO THE INTERNET.

This is absolutely rediculous. I mean, even if I wanted the game, I wouldn't like seeing this first thing out of the box.

EA really knows how to take the fun out of gaming....

Okay with this new development I am now officially not going to buy it either.

I was not aware of this part. If true I am out. As DocJon said, I won't run ANYTHING that does that.
I won't even use Google Desktop as it tends to keep track of a bit too much. Google is not your friend either, believe me.

I was actually liking the game itself. It was not THAT bad overall and even fun, but I will not allow them to monitor me like that. If they remove that "feature" or allow me to opt out of it, I will then consider buying the game. I hate, but can live with, some bugs but this is just them going a little too far.

As for the list I agree with it except:

#6, No BF2 still crashes to desktop as well. 😉

#4, No Titan is not really onslaught. I guess it is similar if you pick it apart but it does not have the node system. Actually it may have been more fun that way. I wish it was more like Onslaught. 😉

#3 Oh man YES. WTF!!!! WHY can't they add CTF AND a PUSH system? UT Onslaught at least was sort of push. Push mode games are fun and really concentrate the action. how hard is it to program the normal
conquest mode to simply not allow a flag to be captured unless the ones behind it are. Come on now!
CTF would involve a bit more but the maps all everything else is there. No excuse. Titan mode is the one that involved a ton of additional programming. they could not have added CTF and PUSH as well or FIRST!!!

#2 The unlock system is annoying but they seem to be given fast enough that they may not have been so bad in the end. I would not have done it this way exactly. I would have given users at least 6 or so on character creation. that would at least allow you to get started.

    Now some positive to 2142.

I was just enjoying the overall 2142 game. it was basically a modded BF2 with some nice additions. Buggy, yes but the overall game play was not far from BF2. That was one reason I liked it, it did feel like an upgrade.

I am bored so it was nice to do something different. I think this is what EA counts on though.

    🤣 HAHAHAHAHAHAH

Yes and the best way to secure your computer is to not connect it to the Internet. 😛

WTF???? How can you NOT connect it to the Internet to play an ON-LINE game????

    MY HEAD HURTS!!!!

Squib has essentially nailed it. The purpose of the gathering is to determine if an ad is viewed by players.

So how do they determine if you hace "viewed" an ad? If you scan by the ad while turning around does that count or would you have to pause and "look" at the ad for a few seconds for it to register? Clearly the ads that will be viewed the most will be the ones that you can't avoid for some reason, such as one that you face as you spawn in a particular location. It has nothing necessarily to do with the product involved.

I know with the billboards in BF2, I looked at them a few times because they were funny, but otherwise ignore them completely.

Maybe they could base the ads in the game off of the spam from your email! Viagra, stock tips, and money from Nigeria 😄

Yes I think we jumped the gun on this one. People start rumors all the time. I think we should get the facts straight before we mention it.

Lets see if the box really has that leaflet in it. Lets see if people figure out if it does indeed install something or not.

At this point I think they are going to do as he said, only monitor what you look at in game.
If so I am back to I will probably get it again.

I still think it is lame but if it is minor stuff just scrolling on a bulletin board etc.. I can live with it.

Don't forget 2nd thru 30th mortgage offers... those are my favorites. And meet singles in your area!!

Just imagine strolling quitetly thru the terrain on the battlefield of 2142 and look over to see the billboard scrolling by with: MEET SEXY NICOLE4U!! 21yrs old (insert your town here) LOOKING FOR MR. RIGHTNOW!

And then of course the picture would follow... *sigh*

I just don't understand why the in game advertising is necessary at all except as a pure money-maker for EA? Does the player see any benefit from it? I mean if there was some benefit to the user, I could see putting up with it, but as far as I can tell, the player gets nothing whatsoever from the ads, unless you count the additional burden on their system/bandwidth. 😒

Dude, the problem is you break the seal, you can't return the game. This should have been included on the BOX!!!

Update: IGA (company EA contracted out to) gave a "interview" on this here: http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=11300

Basically, they are saying they need to know your geo location (via IP), the time you see an ad, the size of the ad relative to the player and the angle at which you're viewing it.

This is total BS. If this is all they supposedly need, they could do ALL of this server side.

    Therefore they are LYING.

This is probably why so many people are getting disconnected all the time. The beta and the demo suffered this. Hell, I was lucky to stay connected with the beta. Something was interupting the bandwidth. Someone like Paladin that has FIOS may not notice this, but with 768 DSL, I certainly had issues.

Also makes sense to hide bandwidth under a 'green' connect, instead of pings that would show variations.

    Sarge,

I think that is the biggest problem with this situation. It brings no benefit to the gamer. If they were to give away booster packs every 3 months and I had to allow advertising to get them, then I would have no problem with it.

Take Anarchy Online. They went to a free to play model with ads or a pay to play without ads. Since it's an MMORPG, I can understand needing a monthly revenue stream to keep the lights on. The key is both Funcom and the gamer get something out of this arrangement. I think that is great.

Heck, you could say our maps were advertisement. I mean, they had Gamers Radio all over them and Lou even put GR FNF banners in a few of the BFV maps. But they were 100% free. Again, both the gamer and the distributor gained something from this.

But to charge full price (for what could have been a $29.95 expansion pack no less) and then push in game advertising on the players. That is crap and it will backfire on them.
  27. #30
I in no way disagree that it is lame no matter what, just that I can live with it if it is minor in game and does not interfere with anything. If it does indeed slow you down as lexx says then that is just the ticket to lost customers period.

I also do not disagree that if you open the game you cannot take it back. I only meant to wait to see what other people report on the actual retail game, if it is really there or not.

I also just think we need to wait and see what is really going on before making a final call on what they are doing. One interview and thread says this, another says that. I am personally just confused right now on the issues.

Wait and see for now....Just TRYING to keep an open mind while waiting for the facts.

This does not discount most things on the 13 list at all. As I said I agree with most of them and am really disappointed in EA and the entire way they operate. I am just addicted to the BF2 game all in all and am willing to overlook certain things. The degree of this "mess" will decide my final purchases and opinions on EA and 2142..

I understand completely! It's very hard for me to not want to get this game and if it weren't for EA's crappy record, I would be. I overlooked things when it came to buying BFV and BF2. In the end, I was relatively happy with BFV but felt that they abandoned it really quickly. At least we got over a year out of BF2 before they let it fall by the wayside....

Paladin, one thing you should consider is a lot of us have been diehard Battlefield fans since the demo for BF42. I played the Wake Island demo for 2 months straight and have been hooked ever since.

There was some debate about BFV and EA/DICE's record, but we let it pass. BFV was an awesome game and had some incredible maps, however they were never able to balance the huey and planes with AA. In the end, it was miserable because one person could own a whole team due to this flaw.

But, we let it slide and there was some debate about EA/DICE's record when BF2 came out, but I tried the demo and although I wasn't a huge fan, it was fun.

I am finally tired of the same old crap over and over. They just pushed too hard with this one. The writting is on the wall. BF will become a MMOFPS at some point down the road. The ranking system, the unlock system and the ingame ads all point to that. EA is trying to figure out how to turn this into a monthly revenue stream.

I just decided to jump off the bandwagon early.

DocJon, Lexx and I have also been playing since the 1942 days. I played so much DC it was sick 😉
i admit it was not online though, mainly bots until BFV came out. We went on-line then but we never really got into that game. BF2 came along and I was, and still am, totally hooked.

I think BF2 is currently the best damn game ever written, even with the bugs. DC was also really good though. I view BF2 as DC+. These are the first real game that has what I liked. I get immersed in it. FPS games in general are just better. BF2142 kind of feels like BF2+. Not as huge a plus but kind of the next level or step.

If the series goes MMOFPS in the future then I am out of course. I am not into that and simply will not buy a game like that. I have enough bills each month thanks 😛

2142 may be a showing of things to come that way so I agree there. However, I do not feel like 2142 is there enough for me to not buy it though. It is a slippery slope of course.

I think it is lame to advertise in game but again, if it is just a bulletin board here and there, I can live with it as long as it does not hinder game speed.

The main scary thing is there does not seem to be anything better.

Everyone is touting Quake Wars and I will get that, but it does not keep track of any stats between games so no rankings. Not sure that part is bad. I do not like the limited number of players that I believe they said will top out at 28 or something? That is lame. 32 minimum. That is a wait and see. The Frontlines game is the only one that looks promising to me but that is a year away.

So in the meantime I think I will play 2142 for a bit and enjoy it. When the other games come out I may switch over at that time.

I see too many problems to rush out to buy this. Why not just wait a couple of months first? If enough people do NOT buy it immediately, the price should drop by Christmas, perhaps as low as $30. Give it time enough to be patched up enough to fix the initial bugs, and show EA there are less lemmings than they thought.

I've made my mind up not to pay $50 for this expansion pack. You can hardly call it anything else. BF2 and for me, UT04 still have plenty of ground to cover yet. Hell, as far as Titan mode goes, might as well play onslaught another couple of months.

No matter what, I still didn't like the kits much. Everytime you startup a game, gonna have to drag and drop options to your kit, that is after you rank up enough to get some of them.

    I mispoke here a bit:

    Battlefield 1942 Released September, 2002
    Battlefield Vietnam Released March, 2004
    Battlefield 2 Released June, 2005

We did get a more than a year out of both BF42 and BFV. What helped kill off interest in BFV quickly was that in April, 2004, a month after release, DICE/EA Announced they were working on BF 2 and we started to see trailers and other goodies in May of 2004. I don't recall hearing much about BFV until just a few months prior to it's release....

    6. The BF2142 Demo causes Crash To Desktop (CTD), which was a bug they "fixed" in BF2 previously!

well that would be a problem but i can count on my 2 hands how many CDT's i had in 1500hours of game play in bf2

i also had only a few CDT's in the beta and demo 2142 and NONE in 2142 so far (50 hours)

    5. Apparently $50 is not enough to insulate a person from in game advertisements or the ad tracking spyware installed with the game.

i paid $18 on ebay for my 2142 cd-key, and the ads i replaced with porn (i made an install package if someone inerested, PM)

    2. Terrible unlock system designed more like a MMORPG instead of great, "quick fix" First Person Shooter (FPS).

FPS and this MMORPG-type Strategic shooter are 2 diferent genes now, you dont like this gene thats cool, i could never again play with a FPS again after playing this "new" gene

in fact i love this gene so much i probaly will subsrice to huxley when it come out

    1. As a Battlefield Fan who has purchased every Battlefield game and expansion since .....

see this is what you dont understand... bf2 was the 1st battlefiled game i buyed BECAUSE i do not like FPS's but i do "this" gene, EA found a new product that was not fully explored yet and gained so a lot of new cutomers

it also lost some, but there is BIG conpetition in FPS's but there isn't in "this" gene YET

BF2 and 2142 are NOT FPS's your completely right there

I had nearly one CTD per night under the 1.3 patch and some people were crashing more than that. Since 1.4, I've only had a handful. That being said, the CTD issues in the 2142 demo are a typical occurrence for this series of games - Two steps forward and one back. Something fixed in BF2 is a problem in BF2142. It may not be a problem in the full version of the game, and that's great if it isn't. I don't know, I haven't played it myself 🙂

I was wondering how long it would take someone to replace the ads with porn. That's awesome! Now that they are starting to ramp up the actual advertising (so I hear) is it creating any issues? $18 sounds like a great price for the game btw....

I think you mean "Genre", right? Grammar police aside, I personally don't like it because it gives more of an advantage to those people that can spend hours and hours playing each day. As a person who averages about an hour a day of BF2, I can keep up with many players because the weapons and load-outs of equipment are all pretty standard. They may have better skills, but they have the same weapons that I do at least. It sounds like in BF2142 (again, I haven't played the game), I would be at a severe equipment disadvantage to anyone with significant time into the game. For me, that just isn't fun.

It will be interesting to see if the series loses players with this new branch. I know that they are trying to pick up on the WoW factor, but if they make it too difficult to keep up, those of us who prefer more of a stand up fight, are going to go somewhere else.

I'd be interested to see if there are any stats out there on how many "new" players WoW gets each month, and how many of the current players have been in it from near the beginning. It would certainly provide some indication of how things might go for FPSs that are branching off in that direction.

it dont have to be like that, its not about making the unlocks more powerful
its about customisation, if unlocks are over powering then that game sux

for example i have a problem with aiming, so i specialise my self in rocket lounchers and shootguns
the thing is that if the game is balanced corectly its not a real advantage to use unlocks (or it should not be)

in FPS is very fast death mach type action, even if i would like it simply do to the fact that i have a AIM disability would be not very good

in bf2/2142 type of games i can hide, run around in vehicles, make traps, ...

it also gives me oportunity to collect cool stuff, like the personal shield unlock for example it really is not a big advantage its more like a cool toy

    --------------
for the game prices, i always buy my games on ebay, they very very cheap in thailand, somethimes its enugh to get the cd-key, somethiemes i have to get the dvd as well, but eigter way its cheap

    Are these country specific keys?

Can you link one of his auctions on ebay?

Man I always worry about buying keys 3rd party like that. I personally would never do it. I simply do not trust it. They could be generated by some key gen or something. How would you really know? It may play fine for the longest time then one day it matches some key from a retail box then what?

    This is just me! 😉

I understand your concern, but a keygen key will not authenticate with the login servers.

Yah, I just read this today. Best a keygen can do is grant you offline single player use. As long as the key worked the first time, I'd say your aok.

Not to mention, a seller who is doing this wouldn't last a week on Ebay. They would be gone fast.

hmm.. just playtested the beta.. must say I was impressed, though I did get 4 knife kills in an hour.. not too bad for flag capturing.. Definitely has a feel of DF with a bit more emphasis on vehicles...

In the demo I did see a few adverts... but nothing detrimental to the game.. if you can get away from all the other aspects of ipsniffing and spyware...

But definitely something I am looking into..as there were not any real issues that I could se that would make me want to 'not' buy this game. Though there have been some great points as to why but most are moral and have to do with the relationship that has been held throughout the life of the Battlefield series between EA and the call of money. now to find my Trackman and stop playing with this touchpad on my laptop.

Okay I should not have said keygen. A random one probably would not be valid, sorry.

There are known issues of lists of codes being generated and getting out for games. Unsure EA has had it though. Sorry no matter what, I just do NOT trust a key someone else owned. What servers did they get banned with it on etc... I am paranoid I guess.. This is the same for used games you can sometimes buy at malls. No thanks.

Can't blame you on this one. After 3 years, someone has been spreading UT keys that are good enough to grant installation and get as far as servers not using UTBAN lists. However, I do know one guy that had to rebuy UT because his key was banned.

I should hope EA's keys are encrypted better than what they could do 3 years ago.
