I don't know how many others have been following this, apart from a number of the other OKGG guys. But, We finally have a worthy Tribes successor. Which is saying something because this project wasn't worthy a few patches back.

As any who know me well know, Starsiege: Tribes was the game that got me into Competitive LAN and Internet gaming. And I can tell you, that this feels and plays like the original, but has the beauty of our modern shooters.
It's going to follow a TF2-like Free-2-Play model in that everything in game can be earned by in-game play, but some bits can be bought. It sounds weird, but they've balanced it fairly well so far. I've been playing the Closed BETA for a couple months now myself, but am happy to let everyone know the Open Beta starts this Friday (2-25-2012).

They originally slated the game for release Fall 2011, but when the former Tribes community members started playing the closed beta; they actually listened. At which point it became more of a "When it's ready" project. And they're still not quite done with it. But they had the physics right from the moment they passed it to open Beta. It was the finer details that needed work. Their original class setup was... just wrong. The interface was horrendously ugly. There was no class customization. Only certain classes had access to spinfusors. Hit-scan weapons were originally in abundance (Now only one heavy class has a homing missle weapon that can only lock on targets actively using their jetpack, which is how it was in previous games). They gave up the idea of development for consoles. A gamepad requires the previously mentioned hit-scan weapons to even attempt to keep up. And they cannot be precise enough to make proper use of weapons who's projectiles are effected by velocity and gravity.
It's definitely a return to competitive, twitch shooters. Even more it's a return to one of the arguable kings of them. And even more, as of Friday, you can simply play it. You can buy a weapon or two, or you can earn them in game. I recommend you buy a few if you like what you see. They've put a lot of work into it. A lot of good work. I played it a few weeks before I bought a "pre-order" pack, myself. But like TF2, you can just play. Like I said they're still not done with it. No idea when the Final "release" will be. And if you'd like in before Friday I have 3 referral keys left for the closed Beta that can get you in a few days earlier.
I'll say this, it's definitely TRIBES, and TRIBES is still a ton of fun.
