I've had the opportunity to play the closed beta of World of Warplanes (same people that do WoTanks) and it was absolute shit, talk about finding that the hot chick you've been waiting to pickup at the bar turns out to be a Canadian cross dresser.....

So I've done a little digging around, and have found an open beta for a game called War Thunder - based on WWII aircraft. It looks like its polished enough to actually give it a try.

I do not know how many you can group with but I do know 3 at least.
MMOBomb has a good review and a friend I play WoT with has some good info on his Youtube channel. See both videos below.

It looks like we can create private rooms to fight together against bots... or each other, there is a PvP open engagement MMO style play, there are solo missions, controls are simple to realistic.

    Thoughts?

ill have to get my joystick set up again.......never liked the term "joystick"
  3. #3
It has three modes Arcade... "something or other" and realistic.

You can keyboard and mouse the first two - or joystick all three.
I just keyboard and mouse it, made it from the level 0 to level 1 in the Brit planes (US, Brit, German, Russian, Jap - air forces)

Have not spent A LOT of time looking through the differences but the thing that jumps out is the amount of guns mounted on planes.

Russian level 0 planes have 4 Machine Guns where everyone else has 2 or 1 -
But Brit planes get 4 at level 1 and 12!!!! at level 2 through level 4 then back to 4 or 6 guns (plus cannons) after that.

I noticed Germans get 2 mg and 2 cannons faster (earlier level but up to that point only 2 mg...

I figure while learning it the more lead in the air the better.

    several game modes (all random)
    air vs air

destroy enemy anti aircraft (air to ground) while the enemy is trying to destroy your ground - so you can play air - air even if it is an a-G map (though they lose tickets faster the less AA units they have)

Capture a single airfield and then hold the enemy off

Capture airfield(s) there are three in this mode the more you have the faster their tickets drop.

Note on all maps there are fixed and mobile AA and "light vehicles" you can destroy which are (for now) AI controlled - they count against enemy tickets - though not as much as human controlled planes. And if you want - you can unlock bombers and fly high altitude missions focusing on ground warfare.

Is it a OMG I lovelovelove this game... no. Is it fun.... kind of, but I'm only level 1 in one nation and 0 in all others.

I figure I'll give it a go up to level 5 (maybe in 2 nations - Brit and....?) before I pass final judgement.

Matchmaking is about 45 second wait for public games, so not too bad, and as you go up in levels you unlock single player missions and more training rooms for practice...

I'll give it a try, you know if I ever get near my computer again!
  5. #5
Howdy Bub... it does not feel addicting - its something I can jump in to and play one or more maps and if I need to get up and take a dump in the middle of a game... meh - who cares.

An interesting thing is your planes are not tied up in a map like world of tanks.
If you leave a map and enter a new game... the planes that died in a game that is still on going, are now available for the new map.

So no waiting for a map to finish to release your planes like WoT does with your tracks.
  6. #6
Problem I'm noticing is that as it is still beta... they patch A LOT - but its not a patch but a full client download every time they make a change.

I've seen three 6.6 Gig downloads in a week.
Note, my ISP caps me at 50 G / month..... so it can be a no-go with this if it keeps up.
Also their servers are Europe (England) and Russia, nothing American, so the download speed is typically NO MORE than 230 ~400K each end every time they change a rev (6.6G @230K = 7 hours + )
Also not fun .... this recent release (tonight) I canceled the up date and will be seriously re-thinking the game.

    It's OK - not great.
  7. #7
with my DL speeds....id be fucked.

really would like something that we both liked enough to play more than a week or 2?
miss daytime gaming. although harder to do with my daughter....not impossible.

Just saw this on Greenlight and came to shar ethe news with you Duck.. but figure that, you are already tits deep into it.

I am with bubba, if I ever see a pc again for gaming I am going to give it a go.

FYI - just reinstalled Warthunder -
They just made a major change to just about everything and is better than it was.

Going to spending some good time with this for the next few months (mental break from Tanks Mike - but will jump in to Tanks when ever you are on and want to play)

Mike did you ever DL WT?
Joe just installed it also - another three man flight?

    - they are now in closed beta of their ground forces addition, it looks like any tank can damage any tank, unlike WoT where your tier 3 can not hurt a tier 6 - not true in Ground Forces - if you place your shots correctly to the weak armor - you do damage.

    AND NO F-ING INVISIBLE TANKS!!!!
If they are in your line of sight... YOU CAN SEE THEM , no more using a shrub to hide a 30 ton tank.

We call this BF2 Syndrome, the smallest twig will stop a tank dead, or the smallest slope<1% makes a tank ineffective.
  11. #11
ill DL today.....ill be on tonight for a round or 2....or 10.
  12. #12
If you get a chance, Paul has a good survival guide on the new patch -
A lot of things have changed from the old way - but that does not matter to us as we've never seen it.

What it does do - is show you how you select how the game distributes exp for research of planes in a nation - and how to select which modules to mount on the planes you are flying.

Worth a watch - it helped me understand the unlock process - which is always hard to get your head around when you start a new game.

  13. #13
I just quickly did the tutorial.....I went with the USA tree, just because I don't know any better.
ill check out that video when I get back this afternoon.
  14. #14
    Same here
I'm flying all nations but it appears the American fighters get bombs further up the tiers where the other nations add cannons instead.

As there are a lot of ground attack components - I'm doing well with the mix.
(Some of the tier 0 planes you start out with do have 2 bombs, but reload them at 6 min 30 sec after release - where higher tiers are about 2 bombs every 1 min 30 sec. - so completely "do-able")

    - Also decided to work my first American unlock as the PBY Catalina - in game it is a bomber at tier 1 might as well jump in feet first.

Catch you tonight (and I believe a squad can be 4 players even with out premium accounts)
  15. #15
im playing now, but mumble isn't working

K, played for a while........not sure id like to be hit by some unknown tank, or kamakazied by some plane......this happens a lot.

probly be on again tonight, but have to use vent.
  18. #18
    So I had a good laugh -
WarThunder / World f Tanks are both companies deeeeeeeep in the frozen heart of Muthar Ruushia.

People ALWAYS swear there is a Soviet bias weather it be in the tanks or planes - the Soviet trees are over powered, and such a good call to start off in.

Here from the War Thunder site are the plane description for like kind planes.
You chose the American and Russian description.

These are from the same tier - same type of aircraft.

    P-38 G

Designed as a long range escort fighter.

    IL-10

The heavily armored with the AM-42 engine was a perfect embodiment of the Soviet "Flying infantry fighting vehicle" concept, whose combat efficiency when providing close air support was increased by "High mobility" over the battlefield, and somewhat improved armament compared to those used on the previous mainstay Soviet ground attack aircraft, the IL-2. The IL-10's top speed at sea level was much greater than the previous versions which meant that propeller driven aircraft could only engage them if they had a height advantage to trade for speed or used "War Emergency Power" and even then engaging a IL-10; intent on escape, was nearly impossible.
  19. #19
Ha! No bias there at all!
    I always liked the P-38

    Bombs/Rockets/Lions/Tigers bears - Oh My.

still cant join, or create a squad.....am I being punished for something maybe?
  22. #22
Mike - you have to get your Mumble working again - the Vet server is no more..
    R.I.P.
  23. #23
Finally got the "vibe" for Jap planes and man - hooked!

    2 days - no vip - unlocked 3 planes
The exceptional H6K4 bomber One drop and it kills a base solo.... makes EXP out the a$$

B5N2 "bomber" in that it carries one 800kg bomb so a two pass plane to kill a base and no forward firing gun, but FAST - man is it fast.
Climbs like a race car also

And then just today the Ki-45 attacker. Just like the German D0-217 J family - but loses AL LOT less speed in a corner (compared to the Do)

It just sucked to get through the base Jap planes. BIG TIME

    When you on next Mike?
  24. #24
Mike - saw you on last night and sent a few messages and invites.
    - anyway -

What ever line of aircraft you are running, get one with a 37mm cannon.
    O-M-G

    I now have the:
    KI-45 - Jap
    P-39 N - U.S.A
    JU-87 G - German
    YAK 9-T - USSR
(Nothing Brit even close yet though)

But man what a HUGE difference - so much so that even me who can't dog fight worth a crap is catching up to you LOL!

(attack high if you can) aim for the wings and it blows the wings clean off - typically take 3 or 4 rounds only.
  25. #26
Oh tell me you have NEVER leaned left or right or forward when your ailerons are damaged trying to WILL your plane around faster.... 🤣

Wonder how much puke they muck out of that thing daily?
  26. #27
tried jumping on last night for a few rounds, once the updates downloaded, I get a critical error.

all drivers are up to date, I can play tanks, or anything else, just not WT
  27. #28
    You still playing through STEAM?
If so I'd try downloading the client direct.

They have added more planes in the trees, made them 30% less exp to progress from plane to plane so you move through them quicker if you want to do that, but require you to have 6 planes in a tier to move to the next tier now, so it evens everything out to the same amount of time in a tier - you just get to play with more planes in that tier.

Planes are also 30% or so less expensive now too.

I'm finding I unlock a plane in tier 3 but do not buy it - I start unlocking a second plane in tier 3 - and once I have 2 I can reliably play that nation. If I only have one in T3 - the rest of my tier 2 lanes are just too weak to be competitive
  28. #29
    4/22/14

WT made a client fix for a know issue with some people not being able to play.
    May be your fix.
    Update is live today
  29. #30
FWIW, I downloaded this the other day. So it now has the amount of play as greater than 50% of the games installed on my system.
  30. #31
    WOOT
Interesting thing on WT is that unlike most online games level progression is not JUST forward, I can roll crews back to any previous skill level to play with friend coming up through the ranks with no penalty.

Should you have the hankering to fly together just let me know and we can from a squad.

I'm finding the game not AS addicting as World of Tanks, but fun enough to not walk away from.
Some times I don't play except for Fridays only and some I'm on all the time.

Stick with it through the base planes (they all suck) and try at least the top planes in tier 1 or first planes in tier 2 -

    Night and day difference.

    _________________________

Ground forces is making it's way in to prime time this week, those that have pre-purchased early access in to Beta are now being released in to a Kursk map where they are playing their own game tank V tank either kill all the other teams tanks or cap the flag zones, but also we as pilots are flying over them with our own plane v plane and destroy airfields also on the same map.... the cross over is the planes CAN kill tanks - they they are VERY hard to spot, AND tank players do have an impressive selection of manned AA tanks.

    _________________________

and yes, ships are coming at a later date, and they too will bein the same maps.

  31. #32

Watch the very first min - Paul is manning a Flack 36 ~ the 37mm AA Half Track gun while the rest of the vid is tanks in realistic mode, but also the minim map shows planes above too - those are player controlled planes.
  32. #33
There also custom battles and training rooms if you want some practice. Which you can fly alone or we can set up and complete as a squad of real people playing against AI enemy.

Also the game has single mission mode which is accessed through the menu button in the upper left -

Some can be quite a hard play - some are easy as all get out - just FYI
  33. #34
I suppose step 2 is to find a joystick, that should take 3-6 months.
  34. #35
    NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DO NOT play this game with a joystick!

All sorts of know issues with sticks.
Play Mouse and Keyboard and you'll thank me.
  35. #36
Wow, well that just saved me months of effort and delay. I am now on to Step 3, Double Clicking on the icon to load the game. ETA: 1 Month
  36. #37
    Winter's coming - We'll see you then.

For some reason the joystick controls are twitchy then do flat dead then back to hyper sensitive - some people can get them leveled out enough to play a map or two then POOF - a new map loads and all the settings are reset to default.

A lot of pissing and moaning and no replay from Gaijin. This issues does not show up with mouse and keyboard.

Some do have better success with Realistic battles as the maps are a good 300% to 400% larger than arcade battles - and people do say joystick does work better, not great.
I just don't suggest RB yet as the flight profiles are more realistic - (yes ask me about going in to a dive and ripping my wings off.... )

Also ammo is period correct and when you run out, you have to return to a base to re-arm, re-fuel and repair and you only have a single plane to use not your whole nation

Arcade mode allows you to die and cycle back and pick another plane in the same nation you started with - you also rearm you plane in flight - repairs still need to be landed on your airport and fuel is set to 45 min, but maps are 15 min matcher.... you can (and do) run out of fuel when your tanks are damaged (American planes and some German have self sealing tanks)

Assuming your Bubba something or other in game?

    Slugnutty
  37. #38
Need to load it before I can define a name
Else Add a month before I can play.
  38. #39
Downloaded, Installed, and have been playing on and off this weekend. It's fun so far.

With US and British first tier I got a max of 8 ground target kills. Second time out in the Russian ones and I get 18 😛

    M4rginW4lker in game.
  39. #40
    Awesome.

As it is a Russian game design (even with a name like Gaijin..... ) Russian planes are ever so slightly "more gooder" than other nations, although once you get in to tier 2 + you DO notice different charismatics of the nations.

Here is a real good "what all this crap means" guide.

    http://forum.warthunder.com/index.php?/top...-the-basics-ab/
  40. #41
I do far better bombing or using heavy fighters to hunt bombers.
In each nation I keep 2 bombers, 2 heavy attackers and a fighter - as having only ground attack planes in a domination match sucks.

I just had a map where I took out the BF-109 F-4 and saw we had a pair of B-17 and a B-25 in a platoon, so I told them I'd do as best I could to swat off the barage that was soon to come with three bombers flying together.

Ans sure enough they came in swarms, it looked ike the WWII films you see with the bombers flying to target with fighters of both sides trying to kill or swat the attackers.

Now mind you - I suck at actual dog fighting but some how I managed to get 4 assists and 2 kills - and for me in a tier 4 match is phenomenal!

And other than the match where I got 23 ground kills with Mike flying cover for me Stuka was the mostestess awesomnerr time I've had.. actually like a good 10 players per side were all playing 'together' as opposed to 30 random flyers in a gaggle.

I saved the replay but it is 8meg ....
  41. #42
I seem to be much better at ground attack than at taking out other planes. I'm still running the base/tier 1 planes and can consistently knock out 10+ ground targets but only 1 or 2 planes, and that seems to be mostly luck instead of skill. The exception seems to be my British planes where my two fighter/bombers can't take out anything with those puny vickers machine guns, and my Blenheim bomber where my gunner has much better aim than I seem to.
  42. #43
LOL - Yah is funny when YOUR AI gunner is better than you.
Sucks when someones AI gunner kills you though.

(Default) F6 puts you in the gunners seat F3 back to pilot 3rd person.

You can train up your gunners (pilots, reloaders) skills for better aim, tighter gun dispersion, tighter bomb spread. Etc.

Also faster reloads not only reload bombs or rockets faster but also the planes primary guns too. I try to get my bombs (rockets) to a reload of 30 seconds or less and my main guns to 15 seconds or better.

British and American planes in tier 1 and some in tier 2 rely on 7mm machine guns, and they are more there to piss people off then kill them, here the Russians start with 12.5mm which DO work,

Later 20mm cannons come online for everyone, yet some Americans remain 12mm or 50 cal - but they make up with 12 guns on a plane - VOLUME!

The attackers start to get the 37mm cannons, that's where bomber hunting is awesome - come in below them at .5 mile pull up and two shots MAX takes off a wing.

Tier 3 brings HUGE cannons - 57mm Jap KI-102. but the mac-daddy is the German ME-410 which mounts a true FLACK gun 50mm air launched mine under the plane. 57mm is an armor piercing cannon the FLACK gun is literally an air launched mine.

I'm one model before the ME-410 now, and then you need to unlock the third version of the 410.

I found when I first started trying air to air I was always too close when I started the engagements.
I never let my self be in the initial wave of aircraft, I circle and climb until the furball starts, then I try to pick off the loaners that are trying to sneak around the side or the guy still trying to climb up to the bombers.

You'll see the phrase BNZ = Boom and Zoom = climb, pick a target, dive, shoot and let the energy carry you up and away so you can pick the next target.

Again the 20mm cannons (and larger help) once you get past the tier 1 planes.
  43. #44
still got a problem, I can play, if I jump right into a match. but if I stay in the
pick a country screen for any length of time, I get the error.

which really sucks now that we have people who play
  44. #45
What I've found is some games I need to force in to DX 9.0 mode, to keep this useless fancy pants video card from crashing, luckily WT has that as a setting and not a command line.

Try this, when you start the game and the splash screen opens up - DON'T HIT PLAY

Up there in the top 1/4 right hand side of the screen, click on the gear icon right beside "CUSTOM' video setting.

You'll see the setting screen that I posted below.

Then in the bottom left hand corner where it says
DEBUG SETTINGS: change RENDER: to DX 9 (in the picture it says Win7+)
or if it continues start working down the list, WIN XP or even Open GL

All of my WoT crashing issues stopped when I forced the game to DX 9 and same for BF4 (*puke*)

You may also want to try turning ON OLD VIDEOCARDS SUPPORT to see what happens there too.
    (Bottom right hand corner)

Also - Are you STILL playing through STEAM? If yes, go try the direct download from WT site and cut STEAM out of it.

Good call on the P-400 Sarge, stick with it and unlock the P-39N-0 Airacobra it's a monster with the 37mm!

I went from the P-400 to the P-38G (climbs to altitude like it has a rocket motors not propellers - but makes WIDE turns) then BACK to unlock the P-39N-0

And by having the P-38G it puts you in a higher tier than doing it P-400, P-39N, P-38

Yet I do NOT feel under armed at all with it, to the point when I just unlocked the P-47 Thunderbolt, I got rid of my 2nd B25-J20 just to make sure I kept both the P-39N and the P-38G - Yah, they work gud.
  59. #60
...side note to everyone, you can fire your guns separately in case you do not know.
Default is NUMBER 1 for small caliber guns and NUMBER 2 for large caliber

I have mine configured to default as left mouse button fires both, and when I have planes that have a mix I select tracers for my small and air target for large - (mostly my bomber hunters)

So when I line up on the bombers I use number 1 to get a streamer of tracers to make sure my aim is OK then either LMB for both or selectively tap number 2 as the cannon is FAR more accurate in one or two shots rather than spray and pray - also cannons are usually less than 20 rounds before a reload.
  60. #61
Platoons are back on, Sarge and I flew for a few hours last night - worked it out there in the end.

Started off both bombing then both kind of being together but not flying together - but for the last 40 min or so we were able to stick close enough together to shoo people off each other and get a few good kills out of it.

Will be interesting when we get 4 playing together. See how that shakes out.
One rabbit for the enemy and 3 support -

    2 sets of 2?
    2 bombers 2 protectors -

has potential for some good mix (I think)
  61. #62
It was fun. Sorry that I missed Friday night.

I wish that squadrons would spawn in formation, or at near each other. I think that if we take our time, organize, then attack, we could have good success because most everyone else appears to be flying around independent.
  62. #63
Yes, I have on occasion flown against squads of 3 or 4 and once killed by them, learned when I seen them, be somewhere else, or at the very least, not be the first one they see.

While watching videos, I do notice people who fly together saying - "climbing to 12,000 feet and waiting to form up", so it appears spawning is random.

I can not be sure but it appears to me that some nations fighter aircraft spawn higher or lower then others.
I swear my Corsairs spawn at about 8,000 foot and as an example my ME-109 at 2,000 and my KI-45 - 6,000 feet

All bombers start at 12,000 to 15,000 feet.

I wish there was a toggle to spawn fighters at bomber altitude, for escort (which I like doing) but then I guess it would be too easy to spawn high to go bomber hunting.
  63. #64
Not that I've had a huge number of games, but I've never spawned above 5000 feet.
  64. #65
I should amend it in that HEAVY bombers are 12K + feet - not light and medium and dive like you presently have Sarge.
And that's the strange part that the F4U Corsairs spawn so high up.
  65. #66
    Tutorial time:

Before we squad up - we need to match our tiers to the lowers tier player (or agreed on tier)
It appears that the tiers need to match before joining the squad - not after.
(IE: Sarge joined then I changed my Battle Rank 4 planes back to tier 1 .... and we were put in to a battle rank 4 match. NOT FUN.)

    How to change your planes:

Pick the nation you want to fly.

Click on the plane slot icon in your garage, you will notice at the 6 o'clock position a pair of arrows pointing up and down.

    Click on the arrows.

You will see the list of aircraft that you have unlocked.
The aircraft that have no dollar amounts were the aircraft you that you flew prior to the plane you have now, from that slot position.

If the plane has a dollar amount in the bottom right corner, that plane was unlocked under a different slot in the garage, but you can pay the dollar amount to use that plane in this slot.

If you pay for a plane from another slot - you can then always use that plane in the slot you paid for OR the slot it was originally unlocked on
    * I do not know - but assume the answer is NO that if you pay to use it in a different slot you would not be able to have two of them.

Something also to pay attention to is the Battle Rating of the aircraft, notice that the P-38/G is a tier 2 aircraft, but a Battle Rating (on the forums you will see it called BR or B/R) of 3.3

Sarge and I found out the hard way there too. I chose a tier 2 airframe and we then wound up in the middle of a tier 3.8 match.

    Live and learn.

So for example Bubba is just starting out - he'll need to tell us his highest tier plane / Battle Rating he is flying.
    "tier 2.0 - B/R 2.4"

We then go through the above steps to match him.
Once done some one passes out the squad invites and go. The match making is pretty stable and we get put in the correct tiers.
  66. #67
So apparently with a little sleep and two cups of coffee - clarity floats to the top.
This appear to be an easier two step process.

Chose your nation and open the research tree.

Click on the plane you want to switch to in the tree.

When you mouse hover over the airframe, you will get the tier and B/R information box.
When you click on the airframe icon, you will see at the 6 o clock position Chose Crew.

Once you click Chose Crew, you'll notice one of the slots will have a yellow check mark in the lower left corner of its icon in the garage row at the boom of your screen.
That is the slot the airframe came from.

Or you can pay the shown amount, if you want to select another garage slot.

    ugh
  67. #68
    Good info.

By the way, I looked at the spawning altitude again last night and noticed it was in meters 🤦. Switched it to feet and am suddenly spawning much higher than I thought.....
  68. #69
LOL yah - you know you can select your convergence too - how far out in front of your plane your rounds cross.

I suck at dog fighting so I have mine set to 400 feet.
Menu: Game Options: Main Parameters - Gun Targeting Distance.

Same place - I also turn vertical targeting on. (default off)
This take in to effect bullet drop at your set distance to put your aiming pipper to where your rounds should be going to when you pull the trigger for horizontal and vertical δ.
  69. #70
Hate it when you have good map after map after map and lose, then have a complete dog of a game for you x2 first win of the day.

That's the story Mike an I had today over and over and over .....
  70. #71
Have you found any good control setup schemes anywhere? I'd like to try using the simplified controls instead of the basic ones but I can't figure out what some of the settings change and how to balance responses.
  71. #72
No - I've tried it once by accident - then once I figured out what the hell was happening went back and tried it a week or so later - and did not like it at all, so I have not been back.

Just not natural to me - so I am a basic control uses I guess.
  72. #73
I basically figured out that once someone gets on my 6 I am pretty well screwed and can't shake them for the most part. I was trying to do barrel rolls, and flat s, scissors, and other evasive maneuvers and can't seem to get some of them to work with the basic controls. I was hoping I could tune the simplified controls to provide that extra maneuverability and the plane that I was testing it with felt a lot more maneuverable but I wasn't able to tune the settings well enough to keep it stable to use in a battle.

I'm still hunting for info on settings tweaks. I'll post them here if I find anything worth doing.
  73. #74
Worth trying in a private room also so we can fly, separate and circle while someone makes changes, then fly some more.
  74. #75
Saw you on yesterday Mike, but so damn busy I could not play - several people are out at work and guess who has to pretend to know what there doing?

Did play some last night and managed to unlock the P-63A-5 Kingcobra last night. By every indication it is the P-39-N Aerocobra but a little deeper digging shows that the main difference is the King can stay in WEP permanently when the radiator gets mounted.

Tough call but I replaced the P-38G Lightning - keeping the Aerocobra and Kingcobra

    zoom-zoom
  75. #76
I was only only on long enough yesterday to unlock a yak, 7 I think.....I need to get rid of the bomber im using. it really is crap
  76. #77
    .02 here
Yes I liked the first two but the IL-2 and PE-3 in your line are meh.
The should be far superior to what you really get from them.

I stopped using them and switched over to the Heavy bomber line - IL-4, PE-2, Yer-2 FAR superior as bombers, YMMV
  77. #78
    Answer to our booty Sarge.

This Saturday, May 10th - we will reward you with Golden Eagles for victories:
    For 2nd Victory - 100 Golden Eagles
    For 5th Victory - 100 Golden Eagles
    For 7th Victory - 100 Golden Eagles

The event is held twice a day, so players in all time zones are able to earn Golden Eagles. Event will happen at (02:00 GMT to 06:00 GMT) and (14:00 GMT to 18:00 GMT). Thus, total amount a player can earn is equal to 600 Golden Eagles.

    - - -

So we must have won at least 7 battles as I'm up 300 GE.
Who knew we were THAT awesome? !
  78. #79
Huh. 300 extra eagles has been a nice boost to my training of pilots and gunners 😀
  79. #80
LOL - I've not paid for any crew upgrades but have spent considerable amount of training on them.

My best one is my B-25-J20 Bomber.
It has 5 gunners and 2 are expert now - and wow what a difference - I intend to keep training until all 5 are expert and they will be the crew that goes in to the B-17

I am trying to get all my pilots with at least the value of 15 in all slots, my reloads 20 to 30 and if I have single gunners also to 15 - my repairs are in the 10 range and that keeps the time on ground to about 50 seconds for a full repair when needed.
  80. #81
    I keep forgetting to train
  81. #82

    Crew Skills
Crew skills are War Thunder's way of simulating the experience and skill gained by air crews through combat missions, allowing them to perform/endure tasks more efficiently and effectively as they increase them over time, such as how quickly aircraft are repaired by ground crew, how accurate gunners' fire is or the amount of g-force that can be sustained before a pilot begins blacking out.

    Pilot
    • Keen Vision - Distance a pilot can see targets directly in front of him
    • Awareness - Distance the pilot can see targets around him, not directly in front of his aircraft
    • G-Tolerance - Tolerance of G-Forces, in "Mouse-Aim" Mode this skill affects control of the aircraft
    • Stamina - Allows the pilot to resist drawbacks sustained from in-air time and G-forces endured during flight
    • Vitality - Indicates the maximum health of and health recovery speed of the pilot

    Gunners
    • Number of Experienced Gunners - Only experienced Gunners will receive the full benefits from the upgrades in this tree
    • Fire Accuracy - How accurate (on target) the Gunner(s) will fire
    • Fire Precision - How precise (remaining on target) the Gunner(s) will fire
    • G-Tolerance - Tolerance of G-Forces, pulling G-Forces will effect the effectiveness of the Gunner(s) negatively
    • Stamina - Allows the Gunner(s) to resist drawbacks sustained from in-air time and G-forces endured during flight
    • Vitality - Indicates the maximum health of and health recovery speed of the Gunner(s)

    Ground Services

    Basic and Expert Training
When your crew(s) reach a high enough rank through spending crew points on the available selections, you will be able to purchase further training using Silver Lions (basic) and Golden Eagles (expert). This option, when purchased, increases your crews Keen Vision and Awareness for the Pilot, Fire Accuracy and Fire Precision for the Gunner(s), and Repair Speed and Reload Speed for the Ground Services. The price for Basic and Expert training varies between each aircraft, based on the amount of RP required to research it.

  82. #83
I didn't realize that your ground crew had an impact on how quickly you reload or how often you jam in arcade mode. Need to spend some points there....

10 golden eagles = 130 training points whcih gives your pilot/gunner/crew a good start
  83. #84
Remember the GUNNERS skill is ONLY if you have other gunners on the airframe.
So something like the P-38G has pilot only - no extra gunners, so putting anything there is a waste.

A B-17 has 6 extra gunners... the points to change a single gunner to expert is a lot, something like 220 for the first, 330 for #2, 440 for #3 etc, so to get a full compliment of experienced gunners is a lot of points when you have a lot of guns.

A plane like a Jap KI-45 has one extra gunner so the training is not too bad there.

You can see how many gunners you have by opening the crew training window and look in the footer of the window and it will say how many gunners you have - if it is the P-38G you will see Additional Gunners - 0
    B-17 would show Additional gunners - 6

If you have a plane with a gunner and you train them to something - then you move the crew to a different plane with no extra gunners, points spent are locked.

So I try to (but not totally successful) keep my planes with more than one crew training in planes with more than one crew.

Unfortunately like the British Wellingtons, great planes in tier 1 and 2 but there slow assed - wooden bombers, and once you get to the third Wellie, your truly hosed, and I spent crew slots on them, I've moved one crew to a Beaufighter and I guess I'll do the same when I get the other and/or the Mosquitoes.

But yes, ground crew does have a HUGE impact.

    c. Ground services (11068 to max)[02.03.00]

    - Repair speed (2138 to max) The mechanic's skill. The rate at which the aircraft is repaired in the hang and at the airfield.

note: This skill can save a lot of money on repair fee on planes that have short repair time and high cost but to make this skill useful, make sure to disable autorepair (on the lower left of the main hangar screen) or it will repair your plane as soon as the battle end without taking advantage of the skill.

50 levels in repair speed skill with halve the time required to repair a plane, further qualification training will reduce it even more.

    - Repair rank (2189 to max) The mechanic's skill. The maximum rank of aircraft that the mechanic can repair.

Note: The plane will repair anyway in the hangar or at an airfield if your repair rank isn't as high as your plane but the repair speed skill won't make the repair any faster until your repair rank is at least as high as your plane's rank.

    - Reload speed (5441 to max) The armorer's skill, the speed at which the weapons are reloaded in the air and at the airfield.

Note: This is one of the most important skill in arcade mode. This works on bombs as well as guns.
I'll list the reload time of the German bomber he-111 h-6 (same reload time as the h-16 version)as an example.
With 0 level in reload speed skill the bombs reload time is 1:19 seconds
With 5 levels in reload speed skill the bombs reload time is 1:16 seconds
With 50 levels in reload speed skill the bombs reload time is 53 seconds
With 50 levels and expert qualification in reload speed skill the bombs reload time is 44 seconds.
With 50 levels and ace qualification in reload speed skill the bombs reload time is 39 seconds.

    - Healing speed (1300 to max) The medic's skill, the speed at which pilots and gunners who are wounded are healed.

Note: I'm not sure what the difference is between this skill and the vitality skills from the other tabs.

Marathon session yesterday - not planned, but the company net work was dead so what's a boy to do?

Mike was on and it appears we have it worked out pretty well.
I was trying to make some cash to buy the next Kingcobra so I'd start out bombing on regular maps.

As I'd start the game in the climb out portion - we'd typically see some young stud try to climb up to engage the bombers, presenting Mike with easy belly or trailing shots.
That leaves the other guy with a decision, continue after a bomber with 6 gunners AND a plane below or behind him, or turn off and engage the plane and let the bomber go.

By the time he makes up his mind, he's more hurt then Mike or I - and typically Mike gets a good first kill, and I am up to 22,000 + feet - and when we played like that, I don't think there was a time we did not win by killing all the bases and the airstrip - or the matches we so close there was no colors red or blue left on the ticker up top.

Once up to altitude, it was fairly easy to call things out to Mike, ... you have a Mustang coming at you from high and behind... turn right, you have friends just over the hill from you.

There is a Spitfire on your rear, but if you can turn to your left there is a Beaufighter and a Typhoon coming to help you, so drag the Spitfire to them.

That appeared to work well (from 27,500 feet, it all looks like a clear sun shiny day.....)

We played one map where I had a Yak 1b trying to climb that high to shoot at me, but my max altitude was great er then his... he never hit me though I did see some of his rounds near me.
The next map he was on our side and he was telling me how frustrating it was trying all map to kill me all the while watching me kill all three of their bases and work on the airfield.

    Was cool.

In Domination matches, I was able to cap the first base with out fail.... every... single....time.... with Mikes over watch, and then it was luck of the draw - and left up to how well the match maker left us with the great unwashed.

Not for the lack of trying though, we were able to get two plane squad down pretty well too. Typically I would stay high and let Mike call out who the target was, Mike would engage and I would either join for the assist, or I would shoo off anyone that followed Mike, letting him concentrate on his initial target.

Plenty of times that roll would work in reverse, I'd take they guy that fell in behind Mike, then someone would trail in on me, I'd scream like Bubba at a BBQ when the pulled pork showed up and Mike would then circle back - I can't tell you how many 3 or 4 kill streaks he got from bailing my ass out while I was trying to keep his tail clear.

    AAAAAAAAAAAA I just wet myself.

    Pilots and tankers!
We are pleased to announce the release of the War Thunder Update 1.41 that makes Ground Forces available for everyone to play! In order to add tanks to your hangar just go to the "Army" tab in the "Research" menu and purchase them the same way as you would do with the aircraft.

Major features of the 1.41 Update:
    • Ground forces are now available for all players in open beta test (Ground Forces progress achieved by players in the CBT will be wiped);
    • New planes, which include the MiG-3 armed with cannons, the I-185 reference model, navy version of the B-25 - the PBJ-1 in two modifications and two new jet-powered Me-262 in the German tree, Griffon powered Spitfire fighters for Britain;
    • Cockpit for all versions of the Ki-45 heavy fighter;
    • Optimization of shadows and update of visual effects;
    • Updated ammunition and ballistics.

    I need a tissue.
  86. #87
Now if they could add infantry men, you know to get helo raped!!!
  87. #88
    Oddly enough, YES.
Some vehicles DO have manned coaxial machine guns and there are AI manned Arty and tank destroyer emplacements, which you can in place of using your main guns limited ammo to destroy the device, you can "gun them down" instead.

The tank commander and radio operators have crew skill qualification called Machine Gunnery to improve accuracy and reload rate.

    So suck it funny-boy
  88. #89
Excited to try the ground forces. Hopefully I'll do better in a tank than in a plane.

I haven't been able to play much at all this week but have made some progress in both planes and in improving my flying tactics. I still suck at air-to-air but have successfully used scissors, barrel rolls, and a loop or two to stick to a target and take them down a couple of times now.
  89. #90
This made me laugh from last night.
KI-102 with its 75mm cannon literally one shotted my ass off in my B-25, yet there are my gunners - fastidiously doing their job, sitting there shooting at targets.

    shot_2014.05.14_21.26.42.jpg

(notice rendered detail of the inside of the B-25. Interesting that they put so much in to it and yo will never typically see it. Just by having it there does it tax your processor/video system to render it even though you do not see it - I wonder?)

  90. #91
downloading now, and probably play for a few hours
  91. #92
played zoom zoom with Mike again yesterday.
    Yah we have it down.

He decided to start working on the U.S.A. tree, so I rolled back my crews, it is obscene when you take a level 4 ALL expert bomber crew and put them in a level 2 attacker plane.
My skilled B-25-J20 crew is all expert now and I put them in the A-20 attacker.

There was a point when we spawned in a tier 1 game and I had 4 people on my ass and my AI gunners killed them ALL before Mike could catch up to me to assist.
Man all I was doing was laughing.

Have found a new respect for the American tier 3 planes, when I first started flying them I thought they were too heavy and did not turn well, which is true to a point, but when you get use to them, heavy turns out to be armored is why they are heavy and can take a beating - get use to the wider slower turns and they are bullet hoses.

Also slowing down a bit and not just tearing through the planes but fully equipping them and trying different ordinance set ups - looking forward to Friday night (as long as I don't have another brain fart on something)
  92. #93
and this kind of where im not quite there, in terms of "remember where the hell the crew came from, and how do you get them back" mode?
what if you don't put them back in the same plane?
  93. #94
Jr. Just look back a few posts, it will all become clear.

    - I just had a good laugh, I was about to get rammed, I knew this moron was behind me, we were winning, I was in my Corsair, I did not hear any shooting so looked behind me and he was about 3 seconds from hitting me, I punched out and he rammed a pilotless plane

    Battle log: "Douche canoe" crashed.

    LOL

System read it as him hitting a solid object and not me as I was alive, parachuting to the ground.

    Moron.
  94. #95
    Nice!

I've only been able to get on for a few minutes here and there this week but have had decent success. Last night I actually managed to land and repair my plane and then land again to capture an airfield in domination. I didn't destroy my propeller or anything even!

I won't be on this weekend at all. Possibly Monday night but probably not.
  95. #96
Man worked all day getting the P-47 outfitted with bombs and rockets, only to find even with a 25 skill in reload, they reload at 5 min 30 sec. each - separate counters.

The guns reload at about 30 seconds, - I was looking forward to having another ground attacker. But it will not be the P-47.
No issue though, I still love the thing as a fighter.

9K from the B-17 (W00T) decided to go for the other F4U corsair after the B-17 so two damn 50K exp rides in the same tier. Glad I like all the planes I have, as it'll be another week and a half for the other 50K....
  96. #97
LOL - Captain America Beauty shots before, during and after.
We won and it lived through the whole damn map -

    Gaping holes in the airframe
    Outboard right dead
    Inboard left engine dead
Left main wing flap outer and a chunk of inner wing gone
    Both rear flaps gone
    Rudder gone
    1st place on the team.

    Start of the match
    shot_2014.05.27_08.13.42.jpg

    All bases dead, bombing Airfield

    I'm in love.
  97. #98
    Nice!

I was flying my BF110 last night and got worked over at low altitude by 2-3 little level 1-2 fighters. They damaged me enough to be slow, set one of my engines on fire, and knocked out my gunner on a bombing run over one of their bases. They followed me back towards our lines where I got rid of one as one of our fighters intercepted him. The other two continued to shoot at me and do damage but I was able to avoid a bunch of it or they were just really bad shots. At some point they crashed, gave up, or lost me and I limped back to the airfield alone where I somehow landed without crashing. 45 seconds later I'm repaired and reloaded and take off back towards their base when the round ends.

I was completely amazed I was able to stay in the air and then level the plane out enough to not crash the landing.

Also had great air-air success last night using the old boom and zoom. Climb to 10k dive on some unsuspecting plane below me and shoot back up to the ceiling. Repeat until shot down.
  98. #99
It's surprising how much help just movin the mouse left right right down up left left in place of flying straight helps when someone is on your ass.

Mike fly's toward the closest friendly that is slower than him... LOL and scrubs off the attacker that way - the bastard.

I think (not sure though) that the American planes pick up self sealing fuel tanks at tier 3 - which helps a lot. I've been on fire plenty of times and just kept flying only to have the fire quit and all I do is trail black smoke, the damage panel shows wings a light pink and engines fine... cool, off to the races.

My Zero's - oh hell no. POOF - insta' tooth pick factory's

Picked up really the only other plane I "WANTED" when I started the game is the Russian YER-2 (same as the B-17, faster, same load weight but 3 gunners vs: B-17's 9 gunners)

Next up working the British line to add the spitfire's.
  99. #100
Just no time this weekend for anything - ugh
Tried the combined server today - meh - nothing I cold really get in to, but I'm not that jazzed for tanks, as Mike says this is a flying game.

I'll stick to planes too, the tanks just don't feel right to me.
  100. #101
Don't care WHAT Mike says, bombers are EASY buttons tied to cash machines.

Started today with no German bombers, and realized it was something I was seriously lacking - as I see an ASS LOAD of the DO-217-M1 in tier 5 fights, and those things are fast as a Me-109 and just as damn agile.

I don't even bother trying to run them down in a single engine fighter. Only my Beufighter, Pe-3, ME-410 or KI-102/45 twin engine fighters stand a chance if I start out at the same level or higher in the engagement - if not, there someone else problem - there THAT fast.

So I set out to fix it today and managed to make it thought the base bomber - I can not remember how many flights in my tier 3;s it took to unlock the first He-111-H3 but I'll guess about about 6 flights to unlock it.

Once I had the He-111-H3 it only took 12 flights in it to unlock the tier two Ju-88-A4 and then that only needed 9 matches (7 of which were wins) to get out of it and in to the bottom of tier two He-111-H3

With the cost of buying the three planes and training the crew three times and the respective upgraded parts while in them, I'm still up 239,000 credits.

    A-T-M machines.

Nothing to see here. was dumb. Deleted.
