64 Bit?

So is it time yet?
Haven't been around my computer surfing much so I'm not to current on the lastest tech stuff except the all out push on 64 Bit processing. Did a quick search only to see a hand full of articles from 5-6 mo. ago. Is everyone still "Hyping" 64 bit processing? Or are we starting to be able to use it?
I do know Vista has been in Beta. Has anyone tried it?
Does anyone see software publisher jumping aboard? I don't! (waiting for a stable OS?)
I see MoBo's are supporting them so does this mean they are performing on a 64 Bit level? How about Cards? PCIx16 can it utilize it?

My reason for asking is that I'm right on the edge of old and new technology with my aging system, 1.8 Barton, and am preparing to upgrade...
But the question is 32 or 64 Bit? They do always say bigger is better but from what I've read Intel blows at supporting 32 apps on it's 64, and on their 64 bit Duo Core (a bullshit term to make you think it really is a fully functional true to the words "dual core"). So I know I'll be sticking with AMD who has the better 32 bit support and a better built Dual Core at least in the Dual core realm is I chose that route..
But what about Apps and games is it time yet? Does a 64 bit enhance gaming yet?

My options:
Upgrade from 2500+1.8 to 3200+2.2 barton for $185 at www.newegg.com
Or spend a little more and get a cheap 64 bit system at a slightly better rating? ie. 2500+ 32bit (1.8 ) to a 3400+64bit (2.4)
By cheap I mean untill we have full support for these the prices are really low.
After writing this I'm leaning waiting a bit more to see what come up in the following months. With the Vista release coming you'd think you'd here software companies clamoring to say they support it?

I have an AMD Athlon 64 x2 (dual core). It will run 32 and 64 bit fine. The only problem with 64bit is there are not many programs out there running 64bit. In doing so, "Windows XP 64bit" pipes those processes through a 32bit WOW which I thought caused the app to run slower. I am running regular 32bit windows xp pro with no problems. Remember you don't have to worry about about the windows license with 2 cores, only 2 sockets. So this will not be an issue when the quad cores come out I expect late this year or early next.

Sounds like you should consider it like this.. when do you plan on making your next upgrade after this? 1 year ? 2 years? 4? If you have no plans to upgrade in the near future.. then I'd go with the AMD 64.. I have a 3000 and never and troubles with it, while I built my friend one with a 3200 and he's never had any problems with his either.. nothing but a positive experience.. but I am psyched about getting the FX-60... that sucker gonna be sweet.. I believe it's a true dual-core

Have been upgrading every 2-3 yrs. But when I do I usually get the older hardware that will suit my needs.

I did up my AGP apperature size to 128meg from 64 and there has been a vast improvement in video performance. So I may wait till the AMD FX-60 is at a reasonable price and there is more software support. I was unable to play at default levels in BF2 previously.
BTW I got BF2 running last night just before everyone bailed out, as usual! We need more west coast recruits!
