I got hold of a computer and monitor someone didn't want anymore. It's an old Compaq Presario 7462. The first thing I found out about it on the internet is that it has an AMD k6-2 processor. What does that relate to in INTEL terms? A p2? A P3? I don't know AMD stuff. If it has the horsepower, and I can add my old video card in, I was thinking I might use it for a cheap HTPC. It HAS a DVD player, So I'm hoping it has enough uumph to play DVD's.

    I had a K6-2 500Mhz for a while it was p2-p3 ish.

    pentium was a 586, P-II was a 686
k6- was about same as 686

I know I was running win 2000 and even XP with my k6-2 for a while then I upgraded. It's a good chip

it's the compaq you have to worry about... anything with that name on it inherently sux...

Thanks Bubba. I think this is a k6-2 500, the same as what you had. I need to take a look at it yet, I'm not sure it even works, but if it does, and can play DVD's, DIVX & Xvid, and I can put my old video card in it, I'm good. Unfortunately, that's asking a lot. I can't even see what kind of video slots it has right now. . .

That is so true on those older machines. I always hated Compaq. I admit though they are not bad these days. They really make nice laptops, mine is one, and their desktops are a lot better than they used to be.

I always warned people away from them before, not so much now.

Now gateway is another story, they always sucked and still do 😉
