Blackberry

    Anyone got one? NOAA is forcing us to go exclusively with Blackberry and Outlook when dealing with PDA phones(going to be interesting with out Linux clients)

    A couple of us have pre-ordered the 8820 and I'm wondering if they are anygood.

    I don't have a blackberry but I know a guy that does. It never leaves his side and he's never complained about it so it can't be too bad. I have no idea what model it is however.

    I've avoided them like the plague.... It's like giving an alcoholic a straight IV of Jack Daniels.....

    I can't stop checking my mail when I'm at the computer, but if I get something like that, I'm screwed..... Sounds fun though.... :-)

    They are used heavily in AOL by managers/directors/vp's etc.. They love them and I dont want anything to do with them. [I finally learned to leave work alone after 5:00, I dont need it on my hip ;p ]

    They are good for Email and some PIM stuff. Since you are getting it free, why not 🙂

    I would not pay for one though. I understand if you HAVE o for work though. Still forcing you to buy something that you may not like is kind of lame. If they pay for it, go for it 🙂

    I personally would not want one as they are very limited.

    I bought a Palm Treo 755P and *LOVE* it to death. It combined my previous Palm PDA's with my cell phone.
    People love the iPhone but it is also limited, at least for now. It cannot do a lot of these things.

    I am HUGE into PDA's and now this is my primary one.

    Things I can do that the other phones simply cannot:

    I have Sprint and EVDo internet on it. Also since it is Palm based there are thousands of applications available for it. Also the Email programs for it can do as good as a blackberry including PUSH email.

    I have unlimited internet usage on it.

    I also have Google maps on it so I can type in a location or do a find business and up pops a satellite view. it can also generate directions.

    Of course a nifty web browser. I also play with a free beta of one called Opera Mini which works well.

    I can also run flash videos etc.. through a program called Kinoma. I can play Google and You tube videos on it even better quality that the iPhone can do. The iPhone plays smaller converted videos.

    I also have TOMTOM on it and can use that with a Bluetooth receiver that I have. I cannot get lost. 🙂
    I have a cool off road GPS program as well that would work well for Geocashing etc... I did however get a stand alone GPS unit, the one Bubba recommended.

    Not to mention there are hundreds and hundreds of games for it.

    Tons and I mean TONS of cool utilities!!!

    I have a very cool astronomy program on it.

    I also use mine to read E-books. I have ready many on it and my PDA. I also carry TONS of tech E-Books and all kinds of cool files like computer tech books and info sheets etc... Dictionaries, thesauruses.

    I even have an HP calculator emulator with the HP ROMs so it is 100% a HP 49G (also 48GX, 48SX) graphic calculator.

    I can run Java midlets on it.

    I have a cool IM program for it that works very well. iPhone, no IM 😛

    I can read and edit native Word and Excel files as well as read full PDF files.

    I have a cool E-book reader called Isilo that has a free conversion program that can convert web pages to be read offline.

    Did I mention that I can stream video and TV stations from around the net. I also can stream Windows media content as well as MP3 files and most radio stations. I can also stream Live365 if the VIP thing is worked out.

    I also have a server program running on my home PC that streams live TV to me, from a TV tuner card I have installed, as well as any video file or MP3 on my home network computers. I can also access any file on my home PC.

    I also can use it with my laptop as a fast modem.

    LOL that is quite a list! Yea I am bummed about the blackberry, I have a Cingular 8125 and before this mandate was about the pre-order a Cingular 8925. It all because of encryption and personal information.

    The blackberry 8820 does have some nice features:

    * Wi-Fi
    * Email and Text Messaging
    * Instant Messaging
    * Browser
    * Organizer
    * Advanced Phone Features
    * Voice Dialling (VAD)
    * Multi-Media Player
    * GPS
    * BlackBerry Maps
    * Expandable Memory
    * TrackBall
    * Set-up Wizard
    * High Capacity Battery


    GPS and Wi-Fi being the ones I'm most excited about.

    But I'm with you guys... I'm worried about this new leash I'm going to have.
