FIOS speed increasing

    The most interesting parts:

    As part of the upgrade, all Fios customers will now have access to download speeds of 50 megabits per second and uploads of 20 Mbps for about $140 a month. The company is also offering its symmetrical 20 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload service to all Fios customers for $65 a month.

    Verizon had already been offering these speeds in certain markets such as Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York. But now the service will be expanded to Verizon's entire Fios customer base, which is spread throughout its 16-state territory. Previously Fios in these states, such as Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia, topped out at 30Mbps/15Mbps and 15Mbps/15Mbps.

    Verizon will also upgrade its mid tier offering increasing speeds from 15Mbps/2Mbps to 20Mbps/5Mbps. And the low end service will increase from 5Mbps/2Mbps to 10Mbps/2Mbps.

    Not here as Verizon sold off its northern New England assets to Fairpoint. This marks the first time I am getting personally screwed by that deal. Likely not the last however....

    What good is this going to do if...

    a, Verizon opts out of certain areas because of cable monopolies.
    b, Verizon is dumping their usenet binaries groups, and probably soon thereafter the servers.

    I'm tempted to leave this shitty city and go back to the boondocks. They are installing FIOS in the little town I grew up in which may at most have 25k people there, some still have dirt floors no doubt.

    25k is a little town??? You and I have very different views on the world.
    To me a little town is under 100 people :-)

    It does good for the ppl who DO get FIOS, which, admittedly, does nothing for you. Paladin is happy though 😛

    They're putting FIOS in your hometown? Do they even have those new-fangled 'water closets' there yet? 😉

    Well, to clarify, its a small town, probably about 30 sq blocks with a 15-20 mile radius of various rural route roads to connect the farmers and what not.

    When I finally get to 'town', its still another 25min drive down the river to my mothers house.

    Wow, I looked it up, population is 9,995, and thats for the entire county as well. Wonder where I got that 25k figure, probably my city neighborhood where I'm currently stuck at.

    Lol, yah Doc, they do, but there are still houses down past my mothers that have plywood laid on dirt floors with uninsulated tin stack coal stoves. Its dirt poor in places there.

    What I don't get is they have a Wall mart now. I have to drive 15 miles from Pgh to go to one of those. Hell you lived here, you know how corrupt council is.


    I bet the reason FIOS is going in there may be because they have opened a couple of new plants on the Ohio river, one to make drywall, the other one is going to be experimenting with coal conversion now that the price of crude makes it a viable option again.

    we get a fibre connection, it just isn't called FIOS anymore because that is a proprietary Verizon name.

    Not to get anyone down...
    But this has been "circulating" news for over a year and I'm not sure it's 100% true.
    No doubt they should give us all 1gig uploads/downloads with that new fangled "lighted wire"straight to our homes.

    But the Judge is still waiting for them to call...

    Just recently, my Charter internet was upgraded to 10/1 for no charge. . .not a big difference, for the most part. Once I got an insane DL of something large - I forget what - the rest of the time it's pretty much the same as it was when I was at 5/512, even with torrents. Speakeasy tells me I have ludicrous speed, but teh internets don't often make use of it. Still, it didn't cost me anything.

    They are the best ISP I ever had. They were quick and didn't have any of the stupid netowrking overhead of all the other ISPs. For a small ISP (at the time they were rather small) in a small podunk town, Charter impressed me.

    Though it was interesting watching the tech try to setup the connection on my alpha version of XP. I told him he wouldn't be able to do it and I would just take care of it myself. He informed me he had to do it, when he couldn't figure ti out and I offered him guidance he refused and called his tech support, they asked me how to do it. He was equally confused at my redhat 7.0 box.

    Ahh, the joy of the Bleeding Edge 🙂 If you're gonna have something other than the current Windows in vanilla, it helps to know how to do things yourself. . .luckily, you can. Running an ALPHA OS!?!?!? 😱

    I thought it was funny that the tech guy on the phone finally let you help.

    When Charter put in our VOIP a couple weeks ago, I was able to tell the installer why he could call out over the cable phone, but incoming calls still came in on the phone line. . .he was pretty cool otherwise, but he didn't believe me. It turned out someone at Charter hadn't made the call to the phone company to disconnect it. . .he had too much faith in his fellow employees, always a mistake 😉
