In all seriousness though. Vista is the 2nd most terrible OS Microsoft has produced...2nd only to Windows ME, but really nothing will take the crown away from ME.

XP was probably one of the best consumer OS's they have produced...and now Windows 7 is absolutely fantastic.

I wish you luck with Vista, I ran it for about 2 months and re-upgraded it back to XP. Almost all my machines now run Windows 7 except for one netbook. I am fortunate that I have a MS Action Pack Subscription so Licenses are never a problem.

seems i need a better processor, it idles in the BF3 start screen at 83% usage, spikes up to 100% during play and freezes.

anyone have a cpu kicking around that will fit a pavillion a1730n that your willing to part with?

    think its an am2 socket.

or anyone know if i can get a new one that will work/fit?

did yours come with the 4600+? That is the one I have in my server currently, you might be hard pressed to find a replacement at this point. I don't have anything that is faster that isn't being used at the moment.

I could check our local hardware leasing specialist to see if they have anything extra in stock (it is a company that buys old corporate pc's in bulk and sells used parts cheap).

or, would anyone have any advice to take the load off my existing one?

i can mash the buttons to turn everything off, but i have no idea which ones i need running.
  10. #11
Any chance you can give the complete specs of this machine... i.e. what video card, sound card, amount fo ram...etc

How many icons are running in your taskbar?

If you wanted to be brave, you could disable your virus scan during gameplay, but you have to remember to turn it back on. This should be reserved as a last resort though, as I would never want someone to disable virus scan if they don't know what they are doing.

Have you upgraded the GPU? I read the stock specs for the model and it says it's a NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE. This is an integrated video card so it shares its memory with the RAM, which has a max of ~300MB. This means that the game is offloading a ton of work onto the CPU.

If you can find a used GPU that is either a nVidia 500 series with 768MB of ram or a ATI 5000 series with similar ram you may get some longevity out of your PC. The only thing is you only have a 300 Watt power supply and the newer video cards pull over 200 Watts by themselves, so you would need to upgrade the power supply which would run you another $50.

I really think the GPU is your bottleneck for gaming at this point. If you can find a newer card, even a 400 series nVidia for dirt cheap you might see a substantial improvement.

I will do a bit more research to get you the best bang for your buck GPU if you would like.

Here is one I found that I think might help alot: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814121397

This was just one I briefly found, but haven't done my research on how well it does with BF3. If you are interested in purchasing a new GPU i will do more in-depth research for you if you like.

my video card is upgraded to a bfg geforce 9800+ gtx overclocked 512mb.....it sounds bad ass, and probably was back in the day.

Hadaka, id apreciate it, and id go new if i can, but it seems the am2 socket cpus will be a hard to find item......i should check the antique stores.

i read somewhere that i can get a quad core cpu to fit, but with reduced performance.....which wouldnt bother me a whole lot, if i can get the game to run.

also running a 750 watt power supply

i vaguely remember during the reformat, vista asked me something along the lines of where i wanted the load to go, either the cpu, or video card........and cant remember what i clicked on.

also cant remember where to find it.

also im trying to shut down some startup programs.

is Bubba right?........can i shut off the windows defender?

not sure what this was referring to...my experience with Vista is only about 2 months of usage.

I am assuming your mobo has a PCI Express 2.0 x16...can you tell if it is 2.0 or 2.1?

    What is your budget?

How much RAM do you have?

What is the brand and model of the PSU (power supply)? This is important for the type of GPU that can be upgraded.

What resolution do you have your monitor at?

If it is at 1920x1080, try reducing it to 1600x900 or 1366x768 or 1280x720. This will put less load on the computer during gaming, your LCD may look a little fuzzy for text but for gaming it should be ok.

Please note most widescreen monitors have a native resolution of 1920x1080 (this is what it is setup to match the physical pixels in the actual panel of the monitor). The screen can become slightly blurry if you don't use the native resolution, but it won't hurt the monitor. If you want more info on why it does this just ask and I can try to explain it.

Your 9800 GTX should run BF3 at low and get you close to 30 FPS based on some google searches for that info.

Does BF3 run at all and just really slow?
Have you tried running it at the lowest settings possible? if so what FPS do you get? (in game hit "~" and type "render.drawfps 1") FPS will be displayed in corner.

  17. #18
only info i can find is pci express x16.

currently running 3 gigs of ram.

power supply is a rocketfish 700w....model, im not sure, but its got a cool blue light.

monitor resolution is low, but can adjust. LCD hahahaha, my screen is deeper than it is wide. i bought it new 9 years ago.

BF3 does run, and runs pretty fast, untill the processor maxes out.
might be a couple of minutes in, or a couple of seconds.......it freezes, but only the game. i can shrink it, and everything else works fine. i get no error message since reformat.

ill try running again in a little while and check FPS.

my origin accnt name is gofys if you want to add me, but the kills to death ratio has nothing to do with my computer problems.....ask anyone.
  18. #19
    BTW, i appreciate the help.

just played again, my FPS is all over the place, drops in the red zone to 22, and jumps up to 120+

EA, and DICE both need a dick punch.
not a little tap either, im thinking full uppercut, ball splitting, all the way to the throat, rip em out, and feed em back in......PUNCH TO THE BALLS.

contacted EA, person was great, but said i needed to upgrade.....but as far as i can see, my system is supported. still wont run.
sent me a code to buy shit, im thinking they gave me a code for back to karkand, thats awesome........but still cant play the F*ing game.

ive got a line on a geforce GTS 450...........new vid card will help?
  21. #22
    Mike,

The 450 isn't going to hurt. I will be honest though, I am not sure your processor is going to be up to snuff. I think you'll be able to run the game with the new Vid, but it is likely to just suck. I may be dead wrong, you never know.

Your processor from my understanding is sort of near the low end of the minimal requirements. 3GB of Ram in vista is near the lower end of what I think would run. Glad to hear you have a 700W PSU, the stock power was a big concern to me, because the newer Nvidia cards are powerhogs.

I don't honestly know if XP is supported for BF3, but getting rid of Vista's overhead with Aero might help your cause, even turning off aero will help. Finally, I would suggest tweaking up what is running in your system, that will help you a lot. This dude does a great job with giving various setups for optimizing systems. http://www.blackviper.com/
  22. #23
let me know what you see, I'll be glad to do anything I can to help you get it working. Just know you are near the cusp, it really could go either way. I suspect with a 450 it'll run, whether it's playable will be the question.
  23. #24
    thank you sir!

im off to work, but will be trying some of these things tonight.
  24. #25
NO - XP is DX 9 and the game needs DX 11 to run - hence Vist and Win 7 only.
(Joe's in same boat and refuses (correctly) to purchase a new operating system just to run a game.)

So Mike needs to keep his Vista for DX 11
  25. #26
turned off aero, and got a good 20 mins playing before it froze.

am getting an error that my display driver quit working but has recovered, (something about nvlddmkm)?

and thank you very much guys.
  26. #27
It's a buisness doing pleasure with you big boy
  27. #28
nvldd.... is the nvidia driver. Hence why it's crashing. If this is still the built on card, that is why. A built on card will just not run a game like this. The fact you get 20 min is encouraging.

I suspect after 20 min that sucker is likely screaming hot and just crashes.

Was just going to say it is either a driver issue (update it ASAP). or the fan on the video card isn't working and it is overheating...if the driver update doesn't fix, grab one of nvidia's utility programs that monitors GPU temps and that will give you an idea if it is overheating.

ive been given the go ahead to build a new rig.......(yes, theres a person at work whos gonna help with the technical BS).

heres what i came up with so far.
    CPU- i5 2500k
    MB- asus p8z68-v
ram- ddr3-1600......8 gig for $40, wow ram came down in price.
vid card- gtx 560....is ordered already, (i can use it in my current rig and run.....on low settings though)

going to use my current power supply, 700w.

still need a writer, and hard drive, <- need advice here. might be able to use the writer in my current PC, i dont use it a whole lot......the HD i wont need a ton of memory here.

and yup, after alot of bitchin, and alot more research than i should have to do, my current vid card is only directx 10 compatible...........why does BF3 say they support the card is beyond me, but it is what it is.

HDD's are up in price currently, but you can't go wrong with a Western Digital Black, 1TB or higher. I got a SSD + Western Digital Green, I don't think I see a huge advantage of having the SSD, so I would not go that route.

Make sure you get the 2500k and not the 2500. I am super happy with my ASROCK Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 mobo which might be a little cheaper than the ASUS, however I have always been an ASUS fan.

Do you have a Microcenter near by? They are almost always $50 cheaper on the CPU than newegg.

Do you know if your DVDRW is SATA or IDE? the new mobo's may not have IDE connections, if so just go to newegg and find whatever is popular and cheap, I have never had problems with DVD/RW drives.

700 Watt's is plenty, as long as it is compatible with your GPU.

8GB of ram is plenty, however make sure you have Win7/Vista x64 bit or your just wasting it. 32bit OS's can only address 3GB of RAM, so 5GB will go unused.

Yes ram is dirt cheap, I got my 16GB for $55 shipped back around xmas.
  31. #33
You've knocked out the hard decisions. Rig looks rather similar to mine. You might consider Win 7 and certainly 64bit to take advatage of all that Ram.

    As for writer and HDD.

If your current DVDr is SATA keep it, if not buy the cheapest whatever one you like. You can grab them as cheap as $16 and I have done well with those cheapies. I tend to stick to "LIte On" brand, but mainly because many other manufactures use their drives and rebrand them.

As for HDD, get the size that works for you. Certainly get SATA only. Brand doesn't matter (I have seen them all fail, people seem to believe some brands more than others, I haven't seen that situation in well over 10 years). I find Western Digital and Seagate run cooler than other brands. The energy saver drives will give less performance. Certainly make sure it's a 7200 RPM (unless you get a solid state). I always choose by looking for the largest cache I can buy at the largest size I can buy. I make sure it's not an energy effcient drive (these change the speed to save energy).

I will admit I cringe a little at the ASUS MB, Only because I have found they are a touch more picky than others and sometimes a touch harder to get working just right. I have only bought Gigabyte for a few years, they are mid range in price, easy to config and solid. I especially like their dual layered, double bios boards. But hey, this is my bias.

I buy only Kingston ram. I love them, they are easy, you won't get the bleeding edge speed, but they won't crash either. They are easy to deal with if you get a DOA stick, you don't have to deal with memory timings (which can be a pain in the arse). I will NOT buy Corsair, they are 100% the opposite of Kingston, hard to get to work right, don't work with many other things, crash a lot, shitty support, if you get your timings right and jesus smiles upon you correctly, I hear you can get the last microsecond of bleeding edge speed, but more likly you'll get crashes. All other brands seem to be fine. Buy the highest speed and amount you can afford. Prices on this ram will go up, just about when you are looking to upgrade. Note: if you are using 32bit windows, you can only address 4Gb of ram, this includes the ram on your video card. If your card has 1Gb of ram, your machine will only use 3Gb of the ram you install you can install 8gb or 16gb, just you will only see and be able to use 3gb in Windows.
  32. #34
win 7 64bit is also on order, installing on this as soon as it gets here.

corsair is what i had picked out, 1600, from what i read is going to be the fastes i can go.
    might have to rethink this.

the only things that are set in stone are the vid card, and the operating system...the rest ive yet to order.

Wanted to highlight that particular tidbit of info in case it got lost in the rest of his suggestions.

I also am running a Gigabyte motherboard - maybe even the same one as bubba and have had zero trouble with it.

I'm running 8 gigs of G.Skill Ripjaw series memory on 64-bit Win7 and I think that helps to offset the relatively low end video card that I'm running. I say relatively because it is a 9800GT which until recently was a pretty awesome card. I run BF in mostly low to medium settings.
