Google #*^%$ up Youtube

I can't log into Youtube without getting my acct linked to my Google acct. Can't be done. No matter what I try, it seems to demand that I link the two. I went so far as to create a new Youtube acct, and used a temporary 10-minute email acct to create it. When I signed into Youtube under that, it signed me out of my Google acct and my iGoogle home-page had me logged me in under my new Youtube name.

No sir, I don't like it. Rat bastards.

It looks like I'm gonna have to give up one service or another. No one does web video quite like Youtube, but it's a lot less important to me. I can get a decent web-based email acct elsewhere, but Gmail is good, and I like my iGoogle home-page, and it's a lot more important to me than Youtube is. I'm gonna have to give this some thought. Maybe someone will come up with a Firefox add-on that will log you in and out of your Youtube and Google accts when you visit each page.

Perhaps this seems silly, but I had no interest in having these accts connected, and I really object to them FORCING me to do this.

But if you don't link the accounts, Google won't have a record of everything about you, they won't know what Youtube videos you have watched all so that they can find more invasive ways to target you specifically for ads. The good news is, since they comb through your email, they already have a pretty good idea.

Yes god forbid I don't want the world to know that I was looking on the internet for health concerns. What a fucking asshat. That statement applies if you were searching for kiddy porn, but some people like the ability to get information privately for very legit purposes. Google can suck my left nut, (too bad we won't know what that sore is about ;-))

I hate to say it, but with M$ taking over Yahoo search, I think we are more screwed than ever.

Someone needs to come up with a search engine company that just does search....

Ebay is doing something similar. They want ebay affiliates to link their ebay user account to their affiliate account. I have an ebay affiliate account tied to my business stuff, but my ebay account is strictly for personal stuff and in no way should the two accounts be linked. Hell, it's been hard enough maintaining a personal paypal account and a separate business paypal account. At one point, they started giving me crap and I had to fight it.

So, I'm looking for a good email provider, and a new homepage, and/or a plugin/program that will automatically log me in/out of different accounts when I visit certain web-pages. Seems like there's a business opportunity in this somewhere, either with a privacy-concerned email or search website, or with a program/plugin to facilitate greater privacy. I'm looking at Zoho for my email, but it looks a little stark & utilitarian.

I don't like the big brother aspect of Google either. I said that when they first started getting big. I was hesitant to use anything by them. With that said once I did I found that I love their tools though so I use it. Google Voice is very cool, the RSS reader rules and of course Gmail is awesome.

I just try to view it as I am a drop in the ocean of information they collect. I have nothing in my emails to worry about. I don't go to any hackers pages or pron or anything. I am very boring web wise 🙂

Doc why are you looking for a new email program? You all of a sudden worried about Google or is it that linking issue?

As for your auto-login query, try lastpass, I recommended this to you on more than one occasion. 🙂

Doc maybe just create a generic account to use for google/yotube and run just that in an IE Tab within FF, or separate browser like IE/chrome, this will allow you to also have your gmail stuff logged in under the FF section. I run IE at work for staying logged into my work Gamil and FF for my personal email.

I wasn't wild about a lot of things Google does, but I let it slide, as I really don't have much going on in my life at all, much anything that I want to keep to myself. Even my health issues are pretty much out there in doctor, insurance and hospital records. However, if Google's going to buy up teh internetz and tie everything together, that might be more than I'm willing to overlook. They don't need to know EVERYTHING about me, little though that may be.

And I've been using it for months. What it doesn't do, and what I didn't see a need for before now, is log you OUT of other sites before logging you into one. If something would automatically log me out of Gmail before logging me into Youtube, and vice-versa, that would do the job of separating the two. I would get an additional Gmail acct by signing up to Youtube, but I would never use it.

That would work. I'll consider using IE for Youtube only, if I can remember to do that. If I use IE Tab, I know I'll forget. I could manually log out of Gmail before logging into Youtube, and vice-versa, but wouldn't want to, and I would forget to do so on a frequent basis, I'm sure. If it sees my Google cookie, and I log into Youtube, BAM! I'm linked. If you hunt around the Manage Accts section in your Youtube acct, it lets you unlink them FOR NOW. But they're VERY INSISTENT on linking the two, to the point where it won't let you log into Youtube without linking them, or they'll give you a Gmail acct if you don't already have one. I wouldn't be surprised if the option to unlink them goes away at some point.

I'll probably just forgo using a Youtube acct entirely. I don't use the acct functions as much as I used to anyway, but it was nice to keep up on occasional posts by favorite posters.

No you set IE tab to remember youtube.com and it automatically changes the rendering engine to IE anytime that site is accessed.

I personally just use an account that is gamil and youtube, who cares. 🙂

I will also use gmail myself. Unless you run your own server for email anything you use is subject to information gathering by said company. I also know that gmail is not going anywhere. The last thing I want is having all my email go away one day. I also love Gmail itself, great filtering, space etc...

I look at it this way; everything you type is collected, everything you do or look at at work can be. Did you know there are flash cookies that track you as well?

Everywhere you go there are security cameras. Every time you use your CC you are tracked. Every day your cell phone company tracks where you are... Just the state of things these days.. Most data collected by Google is anonymous anyway. All they really care about is directing ads toward you and that is fine by me. What are they going to do with knowing I come to this site or search Amazon.com for vacuum cleaner reviews?

This subject has come up at work. Some universities are using Gmaiil 100%.

With that said I do understand some people are more concerned about it. I am just unsure there is a lot we can do as everything gets more and more electronically controlled every day. <SIGH>.

Well, if Firefox remembers to switch to IEtab for me when I go to Youtube, problem solved! I just wanted an automatic way to avoid Google's linking the two.

I think they are pushing the issue due to spammers.

This is the same reason I freaking hate MSN Messenger. I hate that I must have a hotmail account to use. Hotmail sucks ass.

Do you still need a Hotmail account to do that? I know that I can now sign up for a microsoft Live account with any email but it used to be Hotmail only.

I signed up for a Live Messenger account last year and it forced me to use a hotmail account. If they've changed it, I'll be shocked.

I'll have to look into it. It occurs to me that I really need different profiles for Firefox, that loads all new cookies for each profile and keeps each set of cookies separated, as if different users are using it each profile. For all I know, Firefox has this natively, as I never wanted to do that before. I'll have to investigate.
