How much bandwidth is used by P2P?

    • 20% of traffic comes from P2P applications
    • During peak-load times, 70% of subscribers use http.

    • Http still makes up most of the total traffic, of which 45% is traditional web content including text and images.
    • Streaming video and audio content from services such as YouTube account for nearly 50% of the http traffic.

    5. This I know firsthand. When utube is being accessed it takes 75% of my bandwidth. I see my usenet meter go from 890 - >200 instantly, thus the need for a switching timer ;p

    Yeah, Youtube and the like is a tremendous bandwidth hog. It's also very cool and isn't going away, so I hope the internet in general can handle it.

    Maybe some companies would like P2P to go away just because they see it as something most ppl wouldn't care enough about to complain, or to switch ISP's, and it's an easy way to save bandwidth - perhaps the same reason why some ISP's are ceasing to give free access to Usenet. . .or maybe they're in cahoots with companies that believe they have much to lose, like the RIAA and the movie studios.

    BTW, did you hear about the new bill the **AA's have proposed? It would force ISP's to run filtering software for all copyrighted material. It would also make ISP liable for anything sent over their pipes. This is the one thing the DMCA got right. It gave ISP's a pass for what their customers did.

    I'll try to find the details of the new bill. It makes the DMCA look good......

    Still, I can see what Bell Canada is doing as a test of things to come.....

    Who the hell is sponsoring these bills? I've never had the patience to spend more than a few minutes with P2P because I've never had good results with it.

    I'm starting to think ISP's are being shaken down... ie.. I'm thinking Verizon dropped usenet to keep the AG from forcing them to give up privacy records for the terrorism bill. As of last week, my inet usage jumped up another $15 bucks a month.

    Here's to the next 8 years of demo controlled wh, house, and senate. F'in whoop.

    So, it's been about a month I've been monitoring my bandwidth with BitMeter. . .total up and down - 140 Gigs.

    Owch. I'm in trouble if they start rationing bandwidth. In the meantime - 🤘

    Ah come on Bubba, you know better. The dems were holding out over this for months until B hussein polled the soccer moms this last couple of weeks and changed his divine mind. How many flips to the center has it been this month already? You can't blame the other side when the dems hold both houses.

    Now if the AG would have banned every usenet provider nationwide... ah wait, he only had leverage or favors from just a small number of isp's. Its all smoke, mirrors, and corruption.

    You right Bubba. It wasn't the Dems, it was all of them. The Patriot Act is a knee jerk reaction to a horrible situation. We can heal the wounds of 9/11, but unfortunately we can't seem to shake the pain of the Patriot Act. It's still going on today with the stupid FISA bill.

    9/11 was a horrible day, but it pales in comparison to the damage that all the politicians have done to this country since 9/11. Not the left or the right, but all of them.....
