This has been bugging me since my last XP install. Damn icons drew slowly. I'd open a menu, a folder, and I could watch the the icons move down the list, updating one at a time. I have a fast machine, I have 2 gigs of RAM, I couldn't figure out why it was so slow.
I found out how to change the icon cache size in XP

It involves making a registry change, so use ERUNT to back up your registry, or set a system restore point before doing it.
I set mine to 2048. The guide says it probably defaults to 500, but my registry didn't have the variable at all, so I had to create it. I wonder if it cached any icons at all without the variable, which would help explain why mine was so slow.
My windows and menus draw lightning fast now.
