Hmm, I own a mac. And well, I like Mac OS to some degree, but like all OSs it has it's draw backs. I think lately Mac hardware has begun to suck. Now adays they essentially use PC hardware that was cool on a PC a year ago. In November (when my wife was buying her mac) the best video card out there in a Mac was the ATI 9200. Also they aren't doing as good about using hardware that conforms. They had a machine that had a fast frontside bus(that was the draw to that machine) they were charging a premium for the fast FSB and then using ram that was considerably slower than the FSB. They often use small caches.
Now back in the days of IBM Macs, the Mac zealots would always say you can't compare the speed of a PowerPC CPU to the speed of a Intel, then Apple releases the Intel mac and they are saying that the Intel mac is 10 times faster, comparing the PowerPC CPU to the Intel CPU...urrrrg.... Apple zealots tick me off there is no reasoning with them.
Also I don't dig the idea of Form over factor. My wifes new machine comes. I decide it should have more ram I went and bought more ram for it and raced home to install it and have it running for her when she got home from work. I have been working on computers professionally for 15 years. I opened it. It has embedded case screws that you cant reall see. I put in the ram and go to close the case up, the screw won't turn shut. Now I know better than to over torque. The damn things run a cam which engages a gear which turns another cam that closes the case, well in all thsoe mechanics, something froze, I couldn't close her machine. Alright I will replace the $.07 screw... ooo no you don't it's built onto the chassis. You have to bring it to a Mac store to have them replace the $700 Chassis and MB because the screw is so overly complicated.
Now to answer the question. Well, I think it's cool it has it's place. I saw it coming since the day they announced the Intel mac. They had no choice once someone hacked the Intel mac to boot XP. I think you won't see much fo it though. Besides the handful of mac zealots and the people who have too much money who will pay more for inferior mac hardware, then pay for XP? Also I can very much see MS deciding that Longhorn won't boot on Mac OS hardware.
I would agree with you bubba, but you missed something in your analogy.... Check out the specs on the MacBookPro.... It has a fairly decent Graphics card for a laptop. I priced it out today with my work discount and it was about $2200. That's a lot cheaper than the $4000 Alienware/Dell gaming laptop. If I did anything, it would be the laptop.
Thats true but the last one of their laptops I spec'd used a 4200 rpm drive.
It's 5400 with a 100MB 7200 running an extra 200. I am impressed with the laptop.....
