    Oh good!

    The important points...

A payment processor responsible for handling about 100 million credit card transactions every month disclosed today that thieves had used malicious software in its network in 2008 to steal an unknown number of credit card numbers.

Heartland says it didn't discover the breach until Visa and Mastercard came knocking about suspicious activity involving card numbers processed by Heartland. Disheartening, to say the least.

Scan your credit card statements, be on the lookout even for small charges, possibly even less than a dollar. Such charges can be a sign that thieves are testing the account to see if they can pass a fraudulent charge, and may signal a much larger charge to come.

You have to wonder about disclosing this on a day (Inauguration day) when most everyone's attention is focused elsewhere.

Heck, I've received no less than 5 mail notifications that my personal information had been compromised over the last few years. Short of not using a card, there's not much you can do except pay attention.

Anyone ever buy a pre-pay credit card and use it? I think I've seen them at Wal-mart, but I don't know if they work universally, or what kind of surcharge there is on them.

For a while one of our card companies offered 1 time use account #s... I.e. I would call them and say I am ordering from "shadycompany.com" for $42 and they would create an accoutn with 42 and a one use number... then the shady company can lose the number all they want, it won't do anyone any good... I could also say good for up to $100

it was a nice feature when there was a scary web company

Not bad actually, load it up with $ and do like Bubba's cc did for him, a burn thru disposable card. Typically they hold the $ you put in them for 1 year then charge like $15 a year to keep it active if not used.

Good for travel and shady internet purchases.
