McAfee vs Steam

Well, i got online this evening and my mcafee updated itself. After the update, it picked up steam as spyware and removed it. LOL. Now my half-life2, Counterstrike Source, and Day of Defeat no longer work. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

It had a similar false positive with Teamspeak about a year ago. what can you do :-)

not very nice at all. Part of the reason I ditched McAfee.

it's better than the reason i ditched Norton! 🙂 It decided I didn't need my Master Boot Record once. Reloaded and it did the same thing. :bigshock:

I say go ALL NATURAL!

This is why I haven't liked Norton since the DOS days. It did me that favor before too. Mcafee has become bigtime bloatware, and now require active x and IE to update. Didn't Network Assoc get the memo that MS was trying to put them out of business?

I've done the same thing for so long. for some strange reasons, I installed it the last rebuild. go figure.

Don't get me started on that Norton's Internet Security crap. Oh man. I've had some bad, bad experiences with that.

I set a friend up on cable internet. I had her get a linksys router and I set it up so she would be somewhat secure. I told her to get some virus software and she would be fine. So she buys the Norton Internet Security because she wanted to be really, really safe. Down the road she calls me and says she hasn't been able to get on the internet for 3 months.

So, I start running through the usual internet connectivity stuff. Checked the router. Checked the cable. Look for IP. Did some other tests. Everything looked fine as far as I could see, but she couldn't pull up webpages or email. Finally, she goes, let's check my settings. So, I try to go through the control panel and she goes, no my other settings. At that point, I'm stumped. I ask what she is talking about and she says my Internet Security settings. She had XP SP2, so I try to pull up the firewall stuff and she goes no, my Norton Security Settings.

At this point, I tell her I'm sorry, but I can no longer help her. She got upset, but I told her my experience with that software has been nothing but bad and I can't troubleshoot something I know nothing about. I tell her to call Norton's Tech Support. She was not a happy camper.

Her system was hosed, but the good news is the software was doing what it was designed to do. If you can't get to the Internet, the Internet can not get to you..... :twisted:

I don't know if it's still the case, but when I was at the university Zone Alarm was a free firewall. This was in the days when people were first hearing the terms "Firewall" and "Router". Well with zone alarm it would work fine until you uninstalled it. When you hit uninstall it uninstalled all the software but at the same time killed your winsock. It essentially completely firewalled the machine 100%. Then the client would bring you the machine or call you saying it's broke. You would have no idea the machine ever had a firewall installed. You then had to go hack the winsock out of the registry and reinstall it. urrrg.

LOL, now it just deleted my Desert Combat CTF installer download saying it was a NDotNet virus.

I use AVG, because I'm a cheap ass. Seems to work fine, just my 90 day free subscription to McAfee when I got my Dell was enough to piss me off at them. It kept deleting the auto installer files on my ConquerOnline game - vicious malware or some bs like that.

I used Zone Alarm waaay back in the day. I deleted it via add/remove programs and don't recall having any issues. I don't recall much about those days either though, so I could have had problems - but just been all good with it. 8)

I also use AVG and I can get Norton for free from work. the University has a site license for it. I do not like nor use most Norton products. Their AV is "okay" though for the most part, I just like AVG so far so never installed it. Ghost rules though. that is the main product they have that is REALLY good. We use Trend Micro products at work for AV and they are really nice. I have a server that just updates virus software on most of the buildings PC's. The PC stand alone product is called PCCillin.

ZoneAlarm is very good. I would NEVER put a computer on the network without a good firewall and no! MS's built in SP2 one sucks! You need one that blocks outgoing programs as well.

ZA does have some talk about it sending data back home so to speak. Jury is still out. I never had any major problems with it so far.

There is another very very good FREE firewall program from a company called Sygate but guess what, it was bought out by Symantec (yes Norton)a few months ago. So now you can no longer get the free one. ;(

I like it because it also runs on NT kernel based OS's. I.E. Servers.

Lucky for me though I got a version before it went away so if anyone wants it, just ask 😉 It is free and legal.

I am hoping that they come out with a new Norton Firewall (the current one sucks) that is based heavily on this old program as it was very good as I said. Lots of rules based options for fine control.
