MKV video format

    Does anyone have any experience with this?

    As everyone is always quick to point out, it's a "container", not a codec, which means nothing to me. I want to play it, not play semantic games. 🙂

    I installed something 'minimal' yesterday: just what was supposed to enough to play it, not one of those bulky codec packs. It worked, but it screwed up my direct sound drivers, and I couldn't play my mp3's. I uninstalled and restored my registry and all is well, but I still would like to be able to play MKV files. Anyone have any experience with them? If not, I'll do some more googling and play Russian Roulette until it works or screws up my machine. (Heh, get it? MKV stands for Matroska. . .Russian Roulette? 🙂 )

    Uggh. I avoid those like the plague. They are double the size and no better in quality. Also I've never been able to get any of the 'suggested' players or codecs to show them right. Somehow they view better with HD sets tho.

    If your desperate to view one, download the latest VLC player and open it. Then drag and drop the mkv file on it. Don't try to pause it, ff, just watch it or it will lock up on ya.

    Your better off going right back and looking for the HDTV avi version of whatever your wanting to see.

    Yeah, it seems to be a real pain in the ass. If I have to watch it without pausing or FF/REW it, I'd rather just give it a pass. I LOVE how ppl who post them on the DIVX forums say, "Oh, it's a DIVX, it's just in a MKV container." Putzes. I'd convert them to DIVX, but I still need to be able to open them. . .Maybe I'll just learn to do without.
