My First Windows 7 64 Bit Casualty

Well, it turns out Canon did not make a 64 Bit driver for my printer. It worked under 32 bit, but won't work under 64 bit. This kind of pisses me off because it works perfectly fine as a printer, but Canon won't support it. Blah!

Wish I had figured this out before the end of the year.

Something strange happened. After about 4 update install/reboots, a driver showed up for my printer. Everything I googled said you couldn't run my printer on 64 Bit windows 7. So, if anyone has a Canon I850, windows will eventually push a driver down and it does work on Windows 7 64 bit.

I had a ton of trouble with ITunes too. I hate that software. If it wasn't for the Iphone, I would uninstall it. Took me forever to figure out how to get it to work. Did an install as an Admin and that finally did the trick.

So the issue is 64 bit not Win 7 Right?

yup the 64 bit threw some drivers for a loop.

Itunes on PC sucks, I update my phone on a mac for that purpose. I won't install the PC port on any machine I care about.

They work on a 64bit copy of Pro. I have yet to see a 32 bit driver that doesn't. Guessing you went with a copy of Home Premium. o_O ...Pro has the proper full 64 to 32 bit emulation. It's one of the features on top of domain joining and a heap of stuff they figured you didn't need on a home machine. But fully working compatibility modes was a deal breaker in my mind. I still play games that were released in the late days of Windows 98; from time to time. Heck, I don't know anyone locally that doesn't rock Q3 every other month's LAN.

My current laptop came with Vista 64 Home-Premium, but I've run Windows 7 (originally 64-bit beta) since day one, and I've never had any hic-ups. It just works in 90+% of cases, and where it doesn't I just run the installers with some adjustments to compatibility mode, and then they've all worked fine. Heck, 9 times out of 10 it will notice the problems after install, note that it needs to be reinstalled under compatibility mode. It makes the adjustments without any interaction from me apart from a "confirm" (can't recall the exact button text right now offhand), and reruns the installer with said adjustments.

No good suggestions for you other than putting a 32 bit box, of some sort, on the network and remote printing to it. I've no guarantee that'll work for you, but it's the kind of jury-rigged idea I'd start with.

Course, I'm one of these freaks with 2 different server boxes in his living room. And my current laptop may get retired/replaced later this year and turned into the actual living room DVR. It'll make for 3 servers in my living room making me a sad uber-nerd.

The UT2K4/Q3 server has largely gone unused apart from OKGG LANS in the last 6 months. :|
I'd keep it booted all the time if it got any use. The power consumption on a dual core Atom processor is next to laughable. But hey, I figured so long as no one seemed to be using it, wasn't much point keeping it on all the time.

I think I did go with the Premium version. I finally got a 64 bit driver pushed down from Microsoft. It was weird. It didn't show up until my 4th set of updates. I'm good now.
