    OK guru's speak!

    Upload speed / Download speed to the interwebs.
    I've always believed that download speed to your machine and ping to a game server are the important kids on the block when looking for the best gaming you can.

    Upload as long as you have a good ping is relatively unimportant.

    Does upload really matter for the games we play?

    Ok, real answer

    I will likely grossly oversimplify but it should give the gist.

    Typically, connections are either symmetrical or asymmetrical with DL>UL
    A good programmer would understand to push only a minimal amount of data back and forth. They would also understand that many people may have a large DL pipe but a small UL pipe. In essence the game is only uploading things like your position on the map and your actions, while it's DLing the data for all the other users (probably only those in proximity). You aren't DLing or Uploading video per se, just the data needed to create the data similarly on each client machine.

    So size of the pipe matters, for both Dl and Ul. Typically your UL is so small that it's irrelevant. Now, if you are doing something in your home like bit torrent, which depends on you to UL as much a DL than you may fill your UL pipe.

    Of course the caveats. Ping is nice to know how long it takes for the packets to get where they are going, but there is also latency. Which includes the time to deal with the packets on the ends of the communication (I think this is a decent summary). DL/UL speed as advertised vs what you actually have can vary greatly. i.e. your service is 10mb/2mb you might get 1mb/368k. Run a speed test to a server in the general area you are looking for. If you are playing tanks and their server is in dallas, run a speed test to dallas if possible.

    Mike had a house in Canadia that every time it rained - he had to disconnect the RG6 from the house and drain it to get his webs back.
