Ok it's been too long for me to even pretend how to do this so..
What are the steps involved in connecting two computers via a network so you can transfer files between them..
The idea being I want to move my old documents and such off the old machine and put them on the new without having to goof with making CD's/DVD's of the files...
I vaguely remember it had to do with workgroups being setup or something but I havent done it in so long this noob needs a refresher.. thanks
If so, then you are correct. Put both computers on the network, then put them in the same workgroup. On the computer you want to pull the files from, share out all the drives you want to retreive. Browse to the computer via the "My Network Places". You should see those drives.
Another way to access the computer after you shared the drives is going to Start Run Type \IP - This should pull up the other computer with all the shared drives, directories present.
Bubba's way is the fastest way X-fer speed wise. Atomm is right for ease if you do not want to pull your hardware. You should not have to have them in the same workgroup though.
1) Just bring them both up making sure they have their own computer name (explained below) and IP address (either manually which I always recommend or getting the IP via DHCP) and just share your drive.
2) To share your drive: Right click on youâre my computer. Select properties then select the computer name tab. Make a note of the âFull computer nameâ This will be the variable âcomputernameâ in step 3 On the computer you want to copy FROM. Open my computer, right click on the folder you want to copy files from and select properties. Select the sharing tab. Give it a share name. This will be variable âsharenameâ below in step 3. If you will have a bunch of files from various folders then let me know we can share the entire drive. It is usually easy to just create one folder in the root of your drive, share it, move the files into it you want to copy, then move them back after copy. If there are not a lot of files just copy them and you can delete the duplicate after the copy. Or if everything is under My documents just share that.
3) Then on the computer you want to copy TO open My computer. Go to Tools then map network drive. Choose an unused drive letter like âZâ and under folder just type \computernamesharename.
This will map, or bring up, a drive on your computer that will actually be the shared folder.
Now you can copy away from the âZâ drive to your local drive. When you are all one you can simply disconnect the shared drive.
You can share as many folders as you need to simply by giving them there own share names and mapping them on the computer to be copied to. Of course there is a limit of 26 letters less the A,B,C and your CD rom drive letters 😉

I would do it the Bubba way which is what I've done previously.. but the old drive is IDE and this new one is ATA II so.. not sure if this motherboard supports that.. I'm currently having an issue with getting the full 300GB to recognize.. keep hitting the 137GB Windows limit.. grr
What limit? I have not hit any limits as long as it is formatted NTFS man. If it is FAT then the only main limit is no file larger than 4GB but overall drive size should not be an issue. I have 300GB drives working fine. One other suggestion is putting it in an external case. If it is IDE.
I think it has something to do with my WinXp OS Disc.. it doesnt have SP1 or SP2 on it since it's about 3 years or so old.. I ran into this same problem with my old 160GB Drive
Here is the 137GB Limit solution.. It is related to SP1 & 2.. Now that I'm home from the LAN I'll try that network solution for transfering the files..

I never had a problem with this. I think it is a BIOS limitation rather than a Windows one. If you have an updated BIOS you should not have this issue.

I bet it looks nicer now though, what settings do you have everything at, high I bet with what 4X Anti-Aliasing? Sweet!
I may be able to get a new video card (from work) within the next few months. My main problem is I guess I have to get a PCIE version (not available in AGP) so will need a new MB as well and probably new memory. Argggggg
I could never see as far on the map as I do now .. I believe my view distance before was set to 75% so there was always a haze after awhile.. now I an clearly see the dude jumping around and the look of sheer terror as they go "wtf.. where'd that come from...omg HaXxoR!!1!"
I have every setting maxed and the resolution as high as it goes and there isnt one ounce of chop.. I havent seen map load times like this since 1942 😉

eh.. 2142 is supposed to run on the same engine as BF2 so I dont expect much of a performance increase.. and Star Wars: Empire at War looks superb as well.. I've been saving for this machine since late August.. hardcore.. all ya gotta do is save up.. set a goal you meet each month and it can happen.. Now I just need to find a decent Computer Desk

Amen brother!!!! Since the old PITA left I am stuck paying for everything by myself. I get some help but not as much as I would like of course.
The only saving grace so far is I make descent money. Hell though I never have anything left after all the damn bills. I am always broke anymore because of the house and divorce. I cannot wait until it is finalized so I do not have to pay her anymore...
